Please help: creative ideas to remove a wasp that is stuck to me by its stinger

Would really appreciate some advice here from anyone who's been in this situation, and/or who is an entomologist. I was just sitting doing some work after putting the DC to bed, and unexpectedly got stung on the toe by a rogue wasp, which hurt more than I expected (like someone pushing a large thumbtack quite far into the toe, and taking their time about it).

The problem is that the wasp seems now to be stuck to the top of my toe by its stinger. The internet is full of advice on what to do when you've been stung by a wasp and the wasp is long gone, but is curiously silent on what to do if the wasp is stuck. I have managed by angling my foot to get its little waspy body on to the carpet, but when I gently pull my foot back in the attempt to withdraw myself from its stinger, the wasp comes with. Every time it makes another attempt to leave there's another little frisson of pain, which I guess is its stinger, or the venom in it, moving in the skin. I'm not worried about pain, but everything on the web says to get the stinger out ASAP. I'm fairly sure I'm not severely allergic, but if I end up having a reaction it's not an ideal situation: as sod's law would have it, DH is currently away and I can't contact him for the next few hours, and the DC in the house who is old enough to be able to help has a wasp phobia (because we have so many of the bloody things flying around in summer). So if I enlisted help I'd then have a hysterical child on my hands as well as a wasp stuck to my toe. Younger DC also not a fan of flying stinging things. Cat would only care if it got to the point where I was unable to deliver its breakfast.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to reach down and brush it away because I don't want to get stung again. I know smoke calms bees but a) this is definitely a wasp not a bee, b) the only thing I could do to produce smoke would be to burn toast or cook something for far too long, and I need to go to bed, and would also proably put the wasp into another bad mood by stumping around the house to get to the kitchen.

All the advice on the internet assumes that the wasp has left the skin and the stinger can be gently removed with a credit card. I do not want to use said credit card while the blighter is still on my toe, because I imagine having a credit card put anywhere near your stinger will simply make you use the stinger again. It's quite peculiar to find yourself in a predicament for which there is literally no advice on the internet. Hence a late night distress call to Mumsnet for ideas.

Photo please!
Then swat it dead.

Talipesmum · 22/04/2024 23:03

That is weird. I would maybe get a flannel or some sort of sturdy material / wedge of tissue, and pull it out. Then would likely flap it out the window but I might squish it too.

Seabluegrey · 22/04/2024 23:03

No idea really but have you tried submerging in cold water? At the very least it might calm down the pain. And encourage the wasp to detach and depart lest it drown.

Talipesmum · 22/04/2024 23:03

And also photo

Yes this is what I thought, get something round the wasp (without squeezing) and gently/firmly push it away from your foot. Best of luck!!

NeedtostopusingMNsomuch · 22/04/2024 23:05

Use tweezers to pull It out?

loropianalover · 22/04/2024 23:05

I sat straight up in bed and grabbed my bare toes after reading this. YOU POOR THING!!!

I have no advice, I feel like you’re more calm than I am right now. Keep us updated please!

TomeTome · 22/04/2024 23:06

Put it in the freezer? Or a bucket of ice till it goes to sleep.

TomeTome · 22/04/2024 23:07

Or use a comb to get in between you and it then flick it away.

adviceaunt · 22/04/2024 23:09

i thought a wasp lost its stinger when it stung you... its a one chance thing with wasps?

i also thought that once they stung you... they are on borrowed time anyway and will soon die..

i will google this later as im curious... i would need a photo and in this day and age i think one of the first things you would do is get the camera out and have a look?

i suppose you're ok and not allergic to wasps?

Grimchmas · 22/04/2024 23:10

I like the submerge the toe suggestion, try that!

Otherwise do you have a lighter, match, candle? I'm thinking if you wave fire near it, it'll want to leave the area, although possibly it's stuck whatever you do and any struggling it does may cause more injection of the stingy stuff (poison? Venom? I can never remember). I think if waterboarding it didn't work, I'd get tweezers /credit card or whatever and make it quick!

adviceaunt · 22/04/2024 23:10

nope im wrong its bee's

as you were

what her whole foot? in the freezer? until what goes to sleep the foot or the wasp?

Confusedmeanderings · 22/04/2024 23:11

Ouch!!!

Grimchmas · 22/04/2024 23:12

Yeah it's bees, the ones we are trying to save.

Wasps live to sting another day or morph into part of your body, he lives there now

MBappse · 22/04/2024 23:12

Definitely need a photo 🐝

Grimchmas · 22/04/2024 23:13

Wave black pepper under it's nose? Maybe it'll sneeze itself free

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 22/04/2024 23:14

Despite what others are saying please don't post a photo.

Dennerfold · 22/04/2024 23:15

ordinary liquid soap in a spray bottle apparently kills them - Wasps have a strong sense of smell and dislike certain plants like peppermint, spearmint, basil, eucalyptus, cloves, geranium, thyme, citronella, bay leaves, and lemongrass. They are also repelled by vinegar, cinnamon, coffee grounds, and sliced cucumber, Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges

This is how to remove a live tick from the skin with tweezers so may work for a wasp
Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin's surface as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don't twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouth-parts to break off and remain in the skin.

TipsyMaker · 22/04/2024 23:17

I feel for you 😭 hope your foot is OK, I can't believe you've kept it there for so long

Tel12 · 22/04/2024 23:17

Tell me you've sorted it?

Whygobald · 22/04/2024 23:19

Wasp stingers are dead straight so even if this wasp doesn't have the muscle power to dislodge itself, I think you'll be well able to pull it out. A tissue, a credit card or anything that stops the wasps from stinging you again will do the trick.

I'm sure he's used up all his venom so shouldn't be able to hurt you any more. I think this guy deserves to survive this ordeal if you can manage not to squish him.

Caswallonthefox · 22/04/2024 23:21

Wasps don't lose their stinger, which is why they are absolute arseholes.
I wouldn't recommend tweezers because it'll push more poison into you. The best thing to do is flick it out with your nail, So I've been told

SomePig · 22/04/2024 23:21

Here is a photo. Excuse my scuzzy toes.

Sorry OP no advice. Just here to say you write so humoursly and beautifully that I'm awaiting your Saturday morning column in a broadsheet. You will have to engineer some catastrophes but hopefully none as bizarre as this one 😂
