.. to suggest that posting "Have not read thread,/replying to OP only.... but...." is not that helpful?

Because the thing is, threads move on, OPs respond to comments and imput of other posters who can be bothered to read the thread before posting, and you can end up putting something totally inappropriate which is also fairly unhelpful, and a waste of your own time!

If it's a light hearted thread, it doesn't matter - but I agree that it's better to at least skim the thread in order not to make a twat of yourself.

S1ur · 01/04/2008 11:40

see your point but actually sometimes useful to remind you (op) of point of thread and to get back on track.

unknownrebelbang · 01/04/2008 11:41

Haha, have been known to do this myself, but when reading through a thread it irritates when posters have obviously not read through.

Hypocrite, moi?

oh yes.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 01/04/2008 11:41

Oh agree... not talking light hearted threads.. I'm talking serious issues that everyone has been busy considering and debating.. and then people nip in and reply to the OP only. It's often irrelevant and also looks a bit rude to the people who are having all their opinions/advice disregarded/ignored

I think its hilarious on troll threads after the big reveal when someone comes on all shocked. Then has to back track swiftly.

Agree with you MotherFunk.

PABLOP · 01/04/2008 17:26

doh, just realised I've posted 5 hours later!

niceglasses · 01/04/2008 17:33

No, sorry, don't see a problem as long as you admit you haven't read the whole thing - you can still respond to the original OP - if its been said before someone will tell you.

I don't come on MN for long or that often and some threads are huge! If I had to read every sodding post I'd never say anything.

ChocolateRockingHorse · 01/04/2008 17:51

But it looks pretty damn rude, if you're, for instance, putting the OP straight on an issue they are, (also for instance) being rather unreasonable (IYHO!) about.. and infact they've already been PUT straight 47 times over and are now entirely won over.

I don't see why people can't at least skim read a thread - otherwise they're wasting their own time to say the least if they say something that's become irrelevent.

As I said I MAY be being unreasonable, but "Haven't read thread but.." translates to me as "Can't be arsed to read other people's posts but I want you to read mine..."

OP posts:
ChocolateRockingHorse · 01/04/2008 17:52

(I actually think I've done it in the past, but have since decided it looks decidedly off.. so if I can't be arsed/haven't time to read thread, and consider other people's points, I don't post)

OP posts:
LordGodAlmighty · 01/04/2008 17:54

I find it quite strange actually, when you can see that there are already dozens of posts on a thread, that you would reply without reading them. Especially as MN threads can take very strange turns...

MrsMattie · 01/04/2008 17:54

I have no problem with it. Sometimes I can't be arsed to read 77 replies, many of which say the same thing. Often I will just skim through the replies before replying.

purpleduck · 01/04/2008 17:57

hmm

some threads are soooo long

If someone is just asking for an opinion, gives the info in the op, and the thread is 12 pages long......

The thing is, really long threads are usually the provocative ones, so people usually want to respond to the OP quickly.

MarshaKlein · 01/04/2008 17:58

Haven't read whole thread but agree with OP

Yes as stated below [grin} I'm referring to big issues/debates, not lighthearted stuff that is asking yes/no about something

Don't you find they get ignored anyway..?
