To ask how much/what percentage of your earnings goes into savings? I think I’m going massively wrong!

Excluding pension, I save 300. I often wonder what’s the point! I have 1,900 to my name which wouldn’t even pay for an emergency. Should I be saving more?! I am stretched as it is

I don't save each month, we don't have anything left over to go into a savings account. But if I'm lucky enough to get a bonus or money from parents as a gift then that goes into my savings account. A the moment I have 2k in savings, but I'm going to spend it soon as I need some dental work and I don't have a NHS dentist so I'll be back to zero in a couple of months.
I'd be happy if I could regularly save, but it it doesn't worry me that I can't. If there were any emergencies I'd use my credit card. Or get a loan of it was a huge expense.

35% for things that happen over the year but are bigger than day to day (house maintenance, school fees, cars) and 17% for stuff that’s longer term (long term savings or house projects, future years of school fees)

I'm rubbish at saving. I put £450 a month into a savings account then that gets used for holidays, car insurance etc. I have some long term savings but hardly add to them and it's been eroded by inflation.

I do pay off my mortgage and into pensions though. I've just recently started a new job and was musing over my last four years in a job I hated and what I've got out of it and realised that in the last four years I've paid £50k off my mortgage and the pension account from that job has £47k in it (most of which I paid in). So overall I have increased my "wealth" even if I'm not saving if you see what I mean.

25 years ago I had no savings at all and was living on my overdraft (thanks XH). Now roughly 25% goes into joint savings, and we both have our own personal savings pots. My pay is about to go down though so that may need to change.

Rather than compare yourself to others, I think the time would be better spent understanding what you are spending on. If there is nothing which is not really worth what it's costing and £300 is all there is leftover - then you're saving really well! If your spending over £300 in unused gym memberships/tv subscriptions/takeaways then maybe not so much...

What age and stage of life are you? Plus do you get to share expenses?

Get over to MSE and look at their budgeting information.

Stop comparing, it isn't helpful and everyone's circumstances are different. You have done well to save what you have. I was never able to save anything due to my financial commitments. Since stopping full time work and receiving a pension lump sum, it seems strange that I have this. Congratulate yourself on what you are able to save, irrespective of amount!
