To think this was poor from the pharmacist?

6 weeks or so ago I got two cartilage piercings in my left ear, tragus and helix.

I kept irritating them by turning over in my sleep and my toddler has knocked them a few times too so I was getting those annoying irritation bumps which were tender. I haven't had any pus coming from them, no temperature or discharge, just a bit of clear fluid when i removed them which I know isn't that abnormal.

I went to the chemist and asked to speak to the pharmacist, receptionist asked what the problem was and I briefly explained and said I want to buy something for the inflammation but was hoping the pharmacist could take a look first.

Receptionist relays that to the pharmacist and the pharmacist decided, without looking or even speaking to me at all, that it's infected and I need to go to A&E and get antibiotics and sprays would be no good.

She had her baby with her strapped to her back so I don't think she could have sat down with me in the consultation room in the first place.

I'm a bit miffed as we are routinely encouraged to see a pharmacist for minor ailments to take the strain off of GP's and hospitals, but this is the response I got for trying.

I have PTSD after having sepsis so now I'm scared about an infection that I didn't feel I had in the first place 😔 I can't just rock up to A&E for something like this surely, and there's nobody to have my children anyway.

Do you think I'm being unreasonable for thinking her response was poor?

Yes, and if I’ve understood correctly, the piercing shop is closed on weekends (as is the other pharmacy where she could have accessed help). However, she used the weekend closure as a reason not to be able to get there … BUT she could attend the piercing session during the week?

So the OP has an issue at the weekend, not during the week, specifically at the weekend

The piercing shop is closed at the weekend

Her normal pharmacy is closed at the weekend

She, at the weekend when she had a problem, went to a different pharmacy

Why does the day she had the piercing done have anything to do with this...

It's very confusing and running the risk of turning into a Craig David song

Mnk711 · 20/04/2024 19:37

OP you need to be pursuing that piercing studio for a refund, very dodgy putting you at risk like that. Also re the pharmacist she was definitely BU, should've just said sorry she's not available rather than dispense dodgy advice.

Your mate over there.

Geebray? Anyway I'm sorry you feel the pharmacist was a bit shit. Personally I think they were following their protocols. I do hope your ear mends soon and that you love your piercing I always think they look good but I'm too chicken to get one myself.

It's not confusing at all if you bother to read the posts properly, it has been explained several times in detail.

Ha thank you. I'm done with these two but I have a daith on the other side with a lovely Maria tash stone in that I got for my birthday and it always makes me happy when I see it.

Yes I know what you have explained makes sense I was commenting on the PP to the Quoted poster who set it out nicely again. That one was confusing.

Just had a quick Google. Very nice!

Cartilage piercings, if infected, require IV antibiotics as cartilage has poor blood supply, hence very slow healing. I suspect your pharmacist did not feel competent to be able to differentiate between infection and inflammation (which can be difficult - and you do not need to have a temperature to have a localised infection) and so gave you the safest advice.

More info (medical language but I hope it's comprehensible) here: https://entsho.com/pinna-perichondritis-cellulitis

So you're saying that perhaps the pharmacist knew what she was talking about? And that all the amateur medics on this thread criticising her don't?

I mean given you have been boasting about the likes on your post where you literally advised the OP to ignore the pharmacist I'm not sure where you are going with this one...

No, because at no point was the pharmacist made aware that it was a cartilage piercing OR an infection. The health care assistant who was manning the desk didn't even know where the piercing was. The only information the pharmacist got was that it was an ear piercing. Cartilage piercings aren't as common as lobes so there's no reason for her to assume cartilage.

You're trying really hard aren't you 😂

My daith is my next piercing

there is a tattoo topic where you probably wouldn't have got this shit and someone might be able to reccomend a good piercer in your area if you fancy another go once you are all healed from this one

Yes I suppose I was suggesting that, in a way. I meant maybe the GP rather than straight to A&E. But agreeing with the pharmacist that further care was necessary.

No you said "try and get a GP appointment" on a weekend that means waiting until Monday at the earliest. You didn't say an out of hours GP or minor injuries. You reccomended the OP ignore the pharmacists advice after berating her for going there as if it was the wrong thing to do.

Which makes you post I was responding to incredibly hypocritical

Wait. Wasn't your first post berating op for wasting NHS resources for having a piercing she couldn’t handle or some such nonsense?

Do you have multiple personalities because you’ve been rather erratic in your posting style on this thread…

SwingTheMonkey · 20/04/2024 20:08

Op I pierced my own ‘helix’ (I had no idea it was called that until now!) when I was about 16! I’m just glad I had no nasty repercussions from it because it sounds like I could have done! I’ve taken it out now but all of my many ear holes remain open, more than 20 years later. So if I have a mid life crisis, I’ll be able to reinstate them all no problem!

Noyesnoyes · 20/04/2024 20:09

@SwingTheMonkey I have already asked @Geebray if one of her posts was Jekyll or Hyde!

She didn't respond 🤷‍♀️

🤢 the thought of piercing my own ear makes me go a little bit queasy!

I have no idea how you managed this!

I honestly have no idea myself. In my defence, I was young. And stupid 😂

Theres no way I could even consider doing it now. I hope my kids aren’t like me when I was a teen!
