DH will complain of something, headache, backache. Tonight is a sore eye. Yet he won’t take any pain relief. AIBU to tell him to stop complaining? He’s really driving me up the wall tonight with it.

God it winds me up! As a nurse doing shifts in A&E/UTC you see it a lot.
"My xxx hurts so much, it's really sore"
"What pain relief have you taken?"
"Oh nothing"

What the fuck are you expecting me to do to remove pain without pain relief!!!? WHY wouldn't you try it!? Some people are almost proud they haven't been weak and taken some which is just...baffling!

My dh does this. Won't take painkillers because they "don't do anything", then complains about being in pain. I ignore him tbh...not interested in the whinging if he won't do anything about it.

Mine too I just ignore him, he did get some prescription painkillers for an ailment but only takes them occasionally .

Can't stand moaning about little ailments. Get a grip.

Oh yeah men always do this. They won't take painkillers/meds because it might make them better, and then they won't have anything to whinge and moan about, and try to gain sympathy for.

I'm sure men never used to be like this. My dad (born in the 1930s) certainly wasn't - OR my uncles, OR my grandfathers.

Seems to be a 'man born after 1960' thing.

My FiL (born just pre WW1) was dreadful! He once kept poor MiL awake all night groaning, but still refused to take any painkillers. So bloody stubborn. Same with any meds. He once had a bad cough - evidently a nasty chest infection - just before we were due to take him on holiday - in winter.

Dh had to drag him to the GP (FiL still protesting that a ‘salt water gargle’ would sort it, FGS) and stand over him every time to make sure he took his ABs.

I hate this.

Either take something to help or stfu about it.

Mrsjayy · 20/04/2024 10:50

My stepdad won't take painkillers he might take 1 paracetamol if my mum insists he has a medical condition that causes pain but nah he will just carry on like a brave soldier.

My uncle is like this. Had pains in his leg and foot for weeks but just would lay in bed and moan, refused to do anything about it or go to Dr. His dw eventually said go or I'm calling an ambulance. He went and had to have his leg taken off at the knee from diabetes complications he had no idea about. I'll never understand it, and I've never met a woman who does this. I'm sure there are, but I don't know any.

bananaboats · 20/04/2024 10:55

DH is exactly the same & it is very annoying but he gets no sympathy from me if he's not even going to try & help himself!

nobczno · 27/08/2024 20:29

I hear you... it never ends in my household, it's always something else - arm, foot, neck, knee etc. TBF he does have arthritis but he doesn't take meds unless he's in agony.

Of course when I thought I was having a heart attack he moaned all the way to the hospital that 'it was nothing' (thankfully it wasn't)
