To request a c-section

The hospital want to induce me due to concerns over babies growth. I’m waiting for them to call me to go in for an induction but I really don’t want it - my trust only uses the balloon catheter - this is my first baby and would be an inpatient induction. I’m not even 1cm dilated my cervix is closed and high (I’m 39 weeks) so I can’t see it working. WIBU to request a section and when do you even do this? Haven’t spoken with a doctor at all so far.

YWNBU. A valid choice. Speak to your midwife and they should be able to help arrange it for you. Half of inductions end in emergency sections anyway.

It's never unreasonable to exercise your right to an elective section. In this particular situation, it's also very sensible. I'd only ever consider induction if my cervix was favourable.

If you want a c section request one. Talk to your midwife now.

Look up recovery so you know what to expect and so that your Dh/Dp also understands major surgery and your limitations. Not saying any of this to put you off but even for a planned vaginal delivery everyone should know the facts for recovery from both. I had EMCS with my first and an ELCS with my second. Recovery was fine with both. But I listened to my body, rested, recovered.

Very valid choice given the circumstances if that's what you would prefer. My 1st baby ended with an emcs after induction. I went on to have 7 vbac and finally another c section. The only caveat I would put on it would be if you know you want more than 3 children as more than 3 c sections can (not always) be a problem so if you definitely know you want 4 children I'd try the induction first. Im not a fan of c sections (I’ve had one) but in your situation I’d ask for one. The reason I’m not a fan might be because mine was an emcs after days of failure to progress with an augmented labour. It was a really tough recovery, I was exhausted. It’s probably wiser to skip the labour bit.
I did VBAC second time it was fine

Refusal of induction is already part of my birth plan. You can 100% decline to have one and choose a section if that's your preference!

I had an induction, and if I had my time again I’d refuse and ask for an elective c-section .

Of those I knew induced:

  • about 25% had a ‘normal’ birth
  • about 25% had emergency c-section
  • about 50% had an instrumental birth

All seemed to involve days-long labour.

I know everyone's experience is different but I had an induction and would never have it again. Eventually ended up having a emergency C section. Next time I would completely skip and go straight to elective C Section.
I have at least 5 friends who went through similar and said the same.

I had an induction in February that ended in an EMCS. It was horribly traumatic. If I had my time over I would request a CS. If I ever have a second then I won't even try for a VBAC, I would want a ELCS.
