Re Holistic Dentists?

VeganFromSveden · 19/04/2024 10:14

Hi, I have a friend who wants their dental issues addressed by a holistic dentist .
He lives in a county- Northamptonshire.
Do any mumsnetters know of a holistic dentist in that county?
Also, I know it's an individual's personal experience, but if anyone out there has gone down that same route, was your opinion positive or negative?
Thank you

what is this?

Surely he wants recommendations for a really good dentist who has expertise in nervous patients

VeganFromSveden · 20/04/2024 14:02

I’m sorry if I gave an impression that a nervous disposition was the issue.. it’s not.
All I was asking for is if anyone knew of a holistic dentist in his county, and if by chance anyone would share their experiences of a holistic dentist, that would also be helpful to him.
Thank you

What on earth is a holistic dentist?

TeenLifeMum · 20/04/2024 14:03

Where I am I’d just like to find any dentist.

What on earth is a holistic dentist?

One that does pedicures too? I have no ideas but I’m off to google.

feelingalittlehorse · 20/04/2024 14:08

Finding a non-holistic dentist would be great round here tbh

Heatherjayne1972 · 20/04/2024 14:09

I used to work with a holistic dentist- in reality it meant he did the bare minimum when he left the practice had quite a lot of explaining to do to patients as to why things weren’t done in the way one ( and our governing bodies) would expect them to be done

if you need a filling you need a filling - amalgam ( silver) fillings are being phased out anyway. If that’s the issue

gum disease extractions root canals etc can only be done one way there’s not really a ‘natural’alternative

a decent kind competent dentist would be much better tbh

LordSnot · 20/04/2024 14:11

Icanseethebeach Ah so the OP wants a quack dentist.

OP I will give you a holistic dentist experience for just £350! When would you like to book?

Caffeineislife · 20/04/2024 14:19

I'm not entirely sure a holistic dentist is a thing in the UK? If they are, they are sailing very close to the wind in regards to duty of care to patients. Especially on the treatment side. Uk dentistry is moving away from silver fillings anyway.

Tbh they will be hard pushed to find a normal dentist in the UK, never mind a holistic one.

Caffeineislife · 20/04/2024 14:26

Posted too soon. From the very quick Googling I have done. It seems there is a huge variety in their interpretation of holistic dentistry. From what ive seen it ranges from what i would describe as woo, to combining cutting edge dental treatments with improving personal health. Most seem to have private clinics in London or other large cities so it's likely your friend will have to travel. It appears that your friend will have to Google themselves to see which take on holistic dentistry aligns best with their views of holistic dentistry. Depending on their views they may be travelling a distance.

Sera1989 · 20/04/2024 14:30

One of my friends has seen one. Her friend was having their amalgam fillings removed and replaced as amalgam poisons the body and the dentist told my friend that people who have breast cancer often have a leaky root canal on the same side of the body so she is having it replaced by him. I am no cancer/medical expert but IMO it sounds a bit quacky so I am sticking with my normal dentist

skipit8103 · 21/04/2024 16:11

You don’t know what a “holistic dentist” is do you OP?! 😆

VeganFromSveden · 21/04/2024 20:27

I admit I don’t know what an holistic dentist is, but assuming my friend does, I thought I (or you guys) could help, as I don’t know his county…
Skipit.. I can’t work out if you’re asking me if I actually know what is meant by holistic dentist, or you know what it’s is, and you’re trying to warn my friend about “holistic dentists”…
Thanks tho…

A what now?

Pollyannamex · 21/04/2024 20:33

finding a normal dentist is hard enough…

but seriously, are they unable to google ‘holistic dentist northamptonshire’?

VeganFromSveden · 22/04/2024 00:57

Person who wants the holistic approach is very unwell… I wanted to help.. that’s all.

LordSnot · 22/04/2024 08:08

The best way to help is encourage them to visit a real medical professional, not a quack.

I think if he's looking for a dentist who can talk about how good oral health is important for a healthy body then that's ok.
However if he's looking for someone who says this treatment will make him physically better that is a totally different matter. If he is very unwell he needs to see a medical practitioner/specialist, a dentist is not going to be able to solve general/serious malaise.

I read an article at the weekend about a lady who nearly died from cancer after believing that holistic medicine would work better than 'Normal' treatment. She survived because she allowed docs to carry out the 'normal' treatment.

VeganFromSveden · 23/04/2024 19:55

Hi, thanks for all the replies.
I admit I have not a clue the difference between a conventional dentist (if you can find one) and a holistic version.
Not sure if I should be berated for not knowing, as I was only requesting any possible help to seek a holistic dentist in the county he is in.
I also don't know how much already has been done in the way of research...
I just thought that as Mumsnet is usually such a great source of info, I could ask the Q on his behalf.
Whatever his beliefs and reasons are for seeking an alternative, is not for me to judge, as I'd hate it if I was being judged for what I thought was best for me.
I won't try to use persuasion to to get him to use the conventional route, as I don't know enough to argue for or against.
I will however show him all the replies, so then hie can then take his next steps from there.
Thank you anyway...

I just checked in to ask the same question, but I see there is a considerable difference in levels of respect for each other’s personal opinions, isn’t there a guideline which says “Be Respectful of Others in the Group”? Or similar ?
iMHO, it’s a perfectly valid request to ask for recommendations on here, isn’t that why we are. So we are not relying on potentially fake reviews on google etc …
This user has asked a reasonable question about a service in her friend’s country of residence.
If it happens to be your country too, please consider how you might respond to a foreigner in a cafe. Starting up this kind of chat. I hope you might all have more common decency than has been shown here.
Come on people. Let’s woman up and Be Kind if nothing else.

I would usually agree with you, but if OP's friend wants to treat a serious illness with a little light oral hygiene then a sceptical response is kind.

Choosing a low intervention dentist is one thing- one local dentist here does fillings without anaesthesia where possible as the needle hurts more than the filling for some people. They very much appreciate it.

Not for me. I usually need extra helpings of anaesthesia.

If it's a case of offering to cure cancer by removing a filling and the patient doesn't get mainstream treatment as well, then it's dangerous.

Someone was in court recently for causing death by giving alternative treatments when the person needed serious medical support.
