For only dressing my baby in ‘pyjamas’?

DD is 15 weeks old and small for her age (premature, still wearing 0-3months). Yesterday we attended a mums and baby music class and during the pre-class chat we got a couple of comments about how cute my DDs pyjamas were.

I dress her pretty much exclusively in babygrows and bibs, firstly because she has reflux and can write off at least one outfit a day (our record is 4 in 15 minutes!), secondly because most of our stuff is either secondhand, gifted, or cheap multipacks, thirdly because she still very much needs scratch mitts and she cannot stand cold feet or legs (socks fall off, trousers ride up). But most of all, because she’s a baby? Yeah I could waste money on little jeans and hoodies or dresses, but what’s the point? It’s expensive, wasteful, and makes life harder for both of us when it comes to changing and laundry. I’ve never really viewed babygrows as PJs before, just something babies wear.

After a couple of months, I got into the habit of getting DS dressed for the day into little outfits, only long sleeved tops, vests, soft joggers, little dungarees etc. I actually found them much easier to change etc than babygrows with all those poppers (I have dodgy joints!) and just preferred to do that generally anyway but I don’t think there’s any issue with putting them in babygrows.
That being said, there’s nothing cuter than a little chunky baby in a babygrow!

This! I have always dressed dd in dresses and tights because aside from anything, it's much easier than babygrows! I have never understood why people find dresses impractical, they're surely the easiest outfit of all to deal with.

Nothing wrong with babygrows though.

desperatedaysareover · 22/04/2024 14:49

Is day clothes for babies a concept of yesteryear? Both grandmothers were into ‘little outfits’ - I have a comedy photo of DD aged six weeks in a dress and tights ensemble including granny-bought suede boots and a woollen coat and matching knitted hat (even her bib matched!) I couldn’t say it was materially harder than firing her into a baby gro and snowsuit at the time but I also dunno if I’d have been arsed either way, she wore em cos we had em and her grannies went into baby-fashion overdrive. They were also obsessed by warmth, which is understandable but a fleecy baby gro would probably have done the same job.

WhatNoRaisins · 22/04/2024 16:07

The best advice someone gave me when pregnant was to stick to simple clothes for small babies.

PotOfViolas · 22/04/2024 16:10

Sleepsuits used to be called babygros. I think the name was changed to sleepsuits to make people buy day outfits and spend more money.

JRM17 · 22/04/2024 17:18

Oh OP I am firmly in the opposite camp, I hate seeing babies out in PJs all the time. My son came home from hospital in Jean's and a checky shirt. I'd leave him in babygrows if we were in the house but I'd never dream of going out in public in my PJs so I would never do that to him either.

Phoenixfire1988 · 22/04/2024 17:41

My 10 month old still wears sleepsuits all the time , they're comfy , warm and easy I don't see the point in outfits unless we're going out for food or to a party etc

Thehobbit2013 · 22/04/2024 17:51

I kept mine in baby grow at that age. So much easier. I only started dressing them when they were more mobile. Then to prevent losing socks I used sock-ons, brilliant for keeping socks in place

ThisNoisyTealLurker · 22/04/2024 18:24

All my 3 kids wore babygro's almost constantly till they were about 1, it's easier, if they get dirty you just pop another on and they come in packs of 3 and can be reasonably priced. When they grow up they'll have a lifetime of wearing all sorts of clothes so while they're this little it's nice for them to be comfy.

Applescruffle · 22/04/2024 18:29

I dressed both of mine in little outfits every day and baby grows were for nighttime only.
But let's be real here I did it 100% for me, because I enjoyed doing it. Babies don't give two shiny shits what they are wearing as long as they are warm and comfortable.
You are your baby's mum, you do the laundry, you buy the clothes, you know what's important to you and what isn't. Your opinion and what you want to do is the only thing that matters here

DramaLlamaMumma · 22/04/2024 18:32

My 7 month old is still in babygrows 90% of the time. I only put him in “outfits” if we’re going out for something a bit more special. The main thing I love about babygrows is not having to fight to find a pair of baby socks! Hate the darn things, can never find a matching pair and he pulls them off in seconds. So yeah, you do you, nothing wrong with cute outfits but when they’re little I value comfort and ease above style. So I might not do the school runs in my jammies but baby boy sure does 😂

"Do that to him"

Have a word with yourself 😂

I don’t see baby gros as pj s, they are just what babies wear. At some point, sep tops and bottoms and jeans etc will become the appropriate thing to wear. You will know when and meanwhile enjoy the simple dressing times

Allyliz · 22/04/2024 18:36

I had a baby with reflux....she lived in baby grows in many colours and styles...loads were hand me downs..as long as she was clean, dry and happy it never seemed important to me to dress her up ..they're not dolls

LeedsMum87 · 22/04/2024 19:30

Mine lived in sleepsuits from birth to around 12 months at home! Day and night. We only changed into “outfits” if we went out somewhere or had visitors and then it was basic leggings, vest and top or a romper, no dresses or jeans or anything x

BrendaSmall · 22/04/2024 19:30

Mine wore the baby gro things for the first month and then wore clothes during the day and baby gro for bed, when they got short in the leg, I cut the foot bit off 🤣

scottishGirl · 22/04/2024 19:45

I'm the same as you OP. Never once thought of babygros as pjs. You definitely won't be the only one who dresses their baby on babygros in the daytime.

SkyBloo · 22/04/2024 19:51

Babygros got rebranded as "sleepsuits" in a bid to sell more baby clothes (it worked). You need fewer things if they are just wearing the same sort of thing day and night.

Once mine were about 6 months i liked the very soft jersey dungarees with vests under. There were lots with nice animal prints etc. Or leggings and vests. I got a bit irritated with all the poppers on babygros.

SkyBloo · 22/04/2024 19:53

Babygros are clothes. Baby clothes.

If you're thinking of them as sleep wear congratulations, you are the people who fell for the clever marketing wheeze of calling them "sleepsuits".

Itsdeepitsblue · 22/04/2024 20:04

Not sure if it’s unusual, can’t remember! & my youngest is only 2! But I also dressed her in baby grows all the time. They’re comfy and practical. Little jeans can’t be comfortable…

LovelyButteryBiscuitBase · 22/04/2024 20:26

I loved both my babies in babygrows and little hand knitted / baby box grey fleece jacket. I dressed them at way almost exclusively until they started to get more mobile.

My babies were born at 2+3lb. They lived in babygorws till they were over 1!! They were only 12lbs at 1 yr old due to severe IUGR.

nothing wrong with it at all

Sizzlinginapan · 22/04/2024 20:49

My first criteria when buying clothes for my baby is that they have to be comfortable. I dressed her almost exclusively in babygros for the first 4-5 months. She’s now a very active 1 year old and mostly wears soft dungarees. People will always have an opinion. I’ve had a couple of comments about her looking like a boy, because some of her clothes are navy blue, or have dinosaurs/ tigers on them. Family members persist in buying her frilly dresses, which I always thank them for, but she’ll never wear them. She can’t crawl in them very well and they’re uncomfortable. Functionality should trump cuteness.
To me, it sounds like you have your priorities right.

TeaGinandFags · 22/04/2024 20:50

They probably weren't being mean and dress your baby however you want. She's a baby and just needs to be warm and comfy. She's not a fashion statement.

BTW I think 4 outfits in 15 is impressive!

HMW1906 · 22/04/2024 20:54

Absolutely nothing wrong with baby grows, my sons wore either babygrows or leggings and long sleeved vest/t-shirt for about the first 6 months.

Eastcoastie · 22/04/2024 21:01

Please dont bat an eyelid op. My baby was still wearing baby gro's pretty much exclusively until about 10/11 months. We loved the ones with the two way zips but also used the popper ones. The only reason we stopped was because when she started cruising, the feet kind of got in the way. We sometimes used the footless ones thereafter but if we were putting socks on her then we felt we had lose a lot the ease of the all in ones already. We didnt bother with shoes until dd was confidently toddling either.
