Neighbours Dog will NOT stop barking! Help?

RedQuail · 19/04/2024 08:19

What can I do? Neighbours dog will not stop barking, they let it out and it starts barking and it keeps barking and barking and then it starts howling and making all sorts of noises BUT they just leave it. They don't correct it or let it back in. It's truly awful and getting really annoying.

I have 2 dogs my self, yes dogs bark of course but if my dogs start barking I will get them back in, as I am considerate of other neighbours.

We have spoken to them politely and they did not like it and no longer speak to us. So it is now very awkward and I don't know what to do.

A friend suggested spraying water at it over the garden wall when it is going mad out there but I felt this was a bit crawl on the dog.

I could have written your post. My neighbours behave in exactly the same way - keep the poor dog out all day whatever the weather and don't care if it barks and howls constantly. We have talked to them repeatedly and they've been quite belligerent rather than sorry for the considerable inconvenience they're causing us.
I don't know that the answer is. I have considered reporting it to an animal welfare charity but they are unlikely to take action if the dog is fed and allowed in at night. I have considered recording it and reporting it to the Council and this may be my next step.

DuchesseNemours · 19/04/2024 08:25

If you spray water you will make it worse - the dogs will bark even more because they get distressed. It may work in that first few instances but, overall, it will make them more reactive.

The only things you can do are talk to your neighbours (tried already) or keep a record and start a noise complaint with the council.

It's shit, I know.

Mothership4two · 19/04/2024 09:01

Agree with @DuchesseNemours spraying will only wind it (and possibly them) up. Noise complaint is really the only way to go. RSPCA will not be interested if it's healthy, fed and watered. What do your other neighbours think? If a few of you complain it may carry more clout - although I don't know that for certain (not something I have experience in).

I'd play bagpipe music right next to your shared wall for hours in the evening to annoy them right back.

Only if you like bagpipe music otherwise you are contributing to the awful din in the neighbourhood! 😂

Contact the local council.. Insist on a diary sheet.. 2 weeks fill it in. They must take action.. I do know of 1 family who rehomed their ddog.. Do not feel guilty. I have 4 ddogs. My ndn's comment they never ever hear them.

I feel your pain OP. House two doors down - dogs bark the minute they are let out - 11pm and 6am and hours in between, 7 days a week.

The immediate neighbours complained to the owners and whilst they said sorry, they just said ‘they’re rescue dogs and we can’t train them’. They refused to muzzle them when letting them out late/early as it would be ‘cruel’.

After two years of this the neighbours have put their house up for sale. They’re worried it won’t sell as the dogs can be seen barking in the front windows.

Keep complaining, don’t give up.

dameofdilemma · 19/04/2024 09:53

And I echo what other posters have said - we know plenty of people who own dogs who just don’t bark incessantly. But they bothered to train them.

Hyperion100 · 19/04/2024 10:04

Get a microphone and the largest, loudest speakers you can get your hands on.

Place said speakers against the wall and the microphone in the garden.

Then go on holiday for 2 weeks.

Thank you all. I have started logging it but as said it is constant. When they first got the dog it lived outside day and night and since talking with them they have started having it in the house at night although you can still hear it constantly barking. But during the day they put it outside and I think go to work and just leave it and even when one of them are home they don't bother with it. Poor dog but also just doing my head in.

The other neighbours do moan but being an older generation, they don't like to say anything to the owners but certainly have a moan to me about it when we talk.

What utter wazzocks! If they bark then take them out for a walk early/late don't just bung them outside.

I have a rescue, of course they can be trained - although some issues take longer to deal with than others but just leaving a barking dog outside isn't one of them and would be easy to solve (unless you are a lazy g*t). Such selfish behaviour.

We had neighbours (fortunately several doors away) that would let their two dogs out for about half an hour several times a day and they would just continually bark and bark (loudly) for the whole time they were outside. Their NDN's must have been going bonkers. When they moved we felt like having a street party!

Sorry to hear you've got this going on Dame.

2023NEWMUM2023 · 22/04/2024 13:17

Do you have their mobilenumber? When we moved we had same problem both side. One side let their dog bark after 11pm when we were in bed. I sent a short polite text asking them not to let the dog out after 11pm as we're in bed. The dog is now let our earlier and called back in when it barks but the neighbours don't speak to us now!

RedQuail · 22/04/2024 14:36

No we don't have there number. They don't speak to us now and are really ignorant and don't feel they are doing anything wrong. I actually feel sorry for the poor dog stuck outside but at the same time it is doing my head in. Not only it barking and howling constantly day and night and keeping us awake but working from home too there is just no escape!

If they are leaving it all day you should report it to the dog warden as well as the noise dept of the council.

RedQuail · 22/04/2024 14:52

I spoke to a dog warden and a charity they both say if the dog is cared for has water and food they can't do anything. They too said about logging a complaint with the council. I am logging down all the times and will put it to the council when I have enough logged but I am worried if something is done it will cause problems with next door as they will know it is us as we are the only ones to have complained about it. They are funny people and have some dodgy contacts.

Log it with the council because they might want sound recordings as evidence.
It's the only way to try & sort it. We have the same issues. Barking when they go out & locked out in the garden barking & whining instead of being walked.

WiddlinDiddlin · 24/04/2024 21:50

Speak to the local authority asap. They are likely to want a diary on going from the time you contact them onward, rather than one you've already started.

They will ask that you speak to them so you can tell them you've already done this and it hasn't worked and now they won't communicate with you at all.

Otherwise unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do, whilst technically there is scope under the animal welfare act, where the animals needs are not being met, in reality local authorities won't, police won't and the rspca won't unless the basics of food/shelter aren't met. THey COULD have a case for not meeting the animals needs for company or to be free from distress but these things are far harder to prove and so much less likely to result in a successful prosecution.
