What does this corporate jargon actually mean?

A manager from another dept assigned me with a task and asked me to have it done "no later than Friday morning".

Discussing it with another colleague, she lambasted me for not having done it yet, saying it should have been sent by EOD today.

I wouldn't have been able to start the task until Wednesday afternoon, and I was inundated with meetings today. I don't particularly want to log on later this evening (unpaid), so I plan to have it over by 10am tomorrow. AIBU?

YABU - no later than Friday morning = have it there by Thursday evening.
YANBU - no later than Friday morning = I've got until 11.59am (not that I would do that!)

No later then Friday morning is Thursday evening

If it was going to be an issue you should have mentioned it when asked to do it

Changingplace · 18/04/2024 18:05

If they’ve not stated a time I’d be aiming to send it Friday morning, 9am/10am. If they wanted it by end of the day Thu they should’ve said so.

Agree with this. Thursday evening would be 'COB Thursday'.

Yes, this

MarmitePizza · 18/04/2024 18:07

I would be aiming for 10-10.30am on Friday

SpookySpoon22 · 18/04/2024 18:07

YANBU - I would have assumed Friday too but you should have clarified with your manager if in any doubt and whether they meant by Friday or by the end of Friday morning.

Seainasive · 18/04/2024 18:07

I would take that to mean that you have until tomorrow lunchtime.

I wouldn’t read it as that, if they want it by end of the day Thu they should’ve said that. Or if they needed it by first thing Friday say that too.

Around 10.00am-ish Friday.

If they wanted it Thursday night then they would have said COB/EOD Thursday.

MisfitMagpie · 18/04/2024 18:10

To me that would be by Friday lunchtime, if they wanted it by EOD Thursday they should have said that.

FloofCloud · 18/04/2024 18:15

I'd assume it's before midday on Friday

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 18/04/2024 18:16

Friday midday.

WTF? ‘ No later than Friday morning’ means not after 11.59 am on Friday!

It’s plain enough English FGS.

Francisflute · 18/04/2024 18:17

Yep I would agree any time Friday morning.

If they'd meant by end of today or first thing they should have specified 'by close of business Thurs' or 'by 0900 Friday latest' to give you the evening if need be.

1000 will be fine. If not it's their miscommunication.

Ineffable23 · 18/04/2024 18:19

Friday, morning time.

COP Thursday means in time for the person to start it first thing the next day so 23:59 tonight!

If they want it to review Thursday evening they need to give a time on Thursday by which they want it.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 18/04/2024 18:20

Why didn’t you say it wasn’t manageable with your current workload?

Didimum · 18/04/2024 18:21

I don’t think this is corporate jargon, the time just needs to be better clarified. ‘Morning’ is not specific enough for a task that seemingly has some urgency to it.

It is manageable. I've got plenty of free time tomorrow morning.

Later than Friday morning is Friday afternoon. So, no later than Friday morning is 11:59am Friday. It's to be there by Friday afternoon.

Do it first thing tomorrow and you'll be fine!

mrsdineen2 · 18/04/2024 18:27

What right does a colleague have to "lambast" you btw?

Not true. Thursday evening is Thursday evening. You might as well say Thursday evening and mean Thursday morning.

One who doesn't have much else to do other than criticise other people Grin She's one of those types who perpetually moans but never takes the opportunity to do anything to resolve it.

Oh but Thursday evening is actually Wednesday afternoon. Which is obviously Tuesday lunchtime.

I would interpret that as they want it returning during the course of Friday morning if earlier isn’t possible
