One sided nipple discharge? Scared.

Posting for traffic and semi aibu because I don't know if I'm bu to be scared over this.

On Monday I took my bra off and my left nipple felt cold/wet when it hit my shirt. It didn't feel wet when I touched it with my finger but to double check I squeezed it and to my horror some milky looking discharge came out. It was quite sticky but didn't smell or look infected etc.

Is this ever something ok?

I don't think it's spontaneous because I had to squeeze. It's milky coloured not bloody/yellow or green. The right side is normal. Can't feel any lumps or changes in my breast. Haven't breastfed for 5 years and definitely stopped between then and now because I'd randomly check sometimes. Definitely 100% not pregnant, not on any medication either. I'm 36 and not in peri as far as I know. No family history of breast cancer but agh.

It's also coming out of just 2 exits on the nipple - sorry I don't know the correct terms. It's not all over the nipple but the same two smaller holes.

I'm seeing the gp tomorrow and tbh I'm so scared. I've got 2dc, one with sen, this is just my worst nightmare and the closer to the appt it's getting the more anxious I'm feeling.

If any one has any experience so I can prepare myself I'd really appreciate it x

Just checked the nhs app, can see I've been booked in on Thursday. I'm impressed how efficient it's been but also the realness of the situation is kicking in.

Hi OP

I had a cancer scare earlier in the year (not breast) and can very much understand your fear. Thankfully I was ok, and what treatment I did need was done quickly and I was discharged.

The nhs is brilliant when it's working well and I'm glad you've got a quick appt.. chances are you'll be ok too.

Try not to think too far ahead and let yourself get carried away with what ifs..

I’ve just checked nhs app for me and nothing yet but good to know it might come through today. Glad your appt is so soon. I’ve been climbing the walls this weekend. Will be so glad to have it done.

100% the same @aodirjjd it's a horrible wait. Tried to keep busy with the kids, but the sense of dread just hasn't gone. I didn't even know it was a thing on the app, saw someone mention it on another thread. Fingers crossed you get yours today too x

The same issue is happening to me at the moment. Milk discharge from one breast. I stopped breastfeeding 8-9 months ago but now I have a slightly engorged breast and milk. I'm quite worried and grateful for any advice. I hope things worked out ok for you @Drivingcrazier? xx

Hi, I’m also experiencing one-sided nipple discharge but it’s only coming out of one milk duct, the rest release breast milk when I squeeze it. The colour is green and it’s kinda thick. Anyone else had this before? I’m also undergoing investigations for passing big clots and period pain. Freaking out :(

rebeccaxxxx · 04/11/2024 22:50

I have a similar issue but with green discharge. I am going to my GP tomorrow, I have had a lot of health issues and a phobia of doctors so have been avoiding dealing with this one for a few months as it's not spontaneous but it's not going away. How did it work out for the people on this thread? Amy advice? And I hope you are all well x

Falconfield · 04/11/2024 22:57

I had this happen to me when I was in my early twenties. Only happened the once and had never been pregnant or anything.
Nothing ever came of it and it's now over 25 years later (I stupidly didnt see my GP) so while it's sensible to be cautious it's probably just one of those 'weird things my body has done' experiences.

Thank you, I think you are probably right, this is helpful to hear.

Mine is also green discharge and not spontaneous (although only from one duct). I had an ultrasound and it was all normal so the consultant is going to check again in 6 weeks. They did say that even if the duct walls are inflamed (which can cause green discharge) it's a benign condition so hopefully that helps put your mind at rest! Definitely get it checked for peace of mind but if this is your only symptom I would be inclined to think it could just be physiological.

I found this article comforting when I had a freak out: https://www.bci.org.au/breast-cancer-information/fact-sheets/nipple-discharge/

Wishing you calm thoughts, it's awful dealing with health anxiety. xx

Hi, I thought I should update for others researching the same topic. I just got back from the clinic, had a mammogram and ultrasound, it all looks fine, just some dilated ducts which is normal for my age. They were really nice and told me to leave it alone so I don't cause damage or an infection, and to come back if anything changes.

ILoveResidentAlien · 14/08/2025 23:34

Mine has started to leak. It’s very strange

I had this last month and I'm 59. Much more likely to be cancer than you. But it wasn't, just a dilated duct - biopsy normal. 75% of unilateral nipple discharges and NOT cancer, but you need to get it checked out ...

Hi did you have a lump as well as the discharge? Thanks
