Shop not taking responsibility for faulty stock, how is this OK?

A vape shop opened near my house about 5 months ago which was great as there isn't another nearby and it works out cheaper than buying from a newsagets as they do a '4 for £16' deal which sees me through the week.

Every so often one of the vapes would be faulty so I'd return it to the shop and let them know. The guy would reluctantly replace it but explain that he can't really keep doing so (?) as though he's doing me a favour.

He said he'd spoken to his boss and the boss said it's impossible that theres anything wrong with them as only '5 out of every 10,000' are faulty. Neither of the men vape so I don't know how they've reached that conclusion but I can assure you it's wrong and I'm not a dishonest person nor somebody who is so hard up I have to lie to get free nicotine.

Apparently the boss said in future they will only exchange a faulty one if I open it in the shop and test it there and then. I'm not sure how he expects that to work when I buy for the week ahead..

Anyway, the vapes being faulty is becoming a much more frequent thing. Two out of the 4 I've bought this week do not work and the shop has made clear that they will no longer replace them so I'm not going to give them any more of my custom and will instead buy them online.

I'm just really annoyed about their stance and how it has been squared as a 'me' problem. Apparently nobody else has complained 🤔

AIBU?

I'm not interested in quitting vaping at the moment. I have used it to quit smoking cigarettes and will stop in my own time or when it is banned. I buy disposable ones and recycle them accordingly so can we please not make it a vape bashing thread 🙂

Told by man in vape shop to tap/bang a few times on a hard surface. Only had a couple that I had to use this for but it worked

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 18/04/2024 18:39

Vaping is disgusting. But if you must, then surely just buy online/elsewhere and don’t give the guy your custom.

teabooks · 18/04/2024 18:50

You sound like hard work miss busy body.

whynotwhatknot · 18/04/2024 18:55

wouldnt trust it myself probably a front for someting else

LakeTiticaca · 18/04/2024 18:58

Well of course they would.say nobody else has complained, wouldn't they!! Telling you to contact the manufacturer is bullshit. You made a contact with the retailer so they need to refund or replace, then retrieve the cost back from the supplier. Report them to trading standards

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/04/2024 19:02

If you think these are fakes, @VapeProblem1, please don’t buy them any more. God knows what you are inhaling.

There must be some way of finding good quality products that are going to be safe for you to use - and to be honest, if it costs more, I think it is worth it - you only get one pair of lungs.

I would far rather see someone vaping than smoking, and you are to be congratulated for giving up smoking - it is such a hard thing to do. My mum tried and failed several times, and when she died, she had advanced lung cancer.

LatteLady · 18/04/2024 19:12

Call environmental health, it is likely that the vapes are fake and therefore dangerous... they will sort it out and the shop is probably already on their radar.

JanuaryBirthdays · 18/04/2024 19:20

Open them in the shop, the battery will for sure last for a week if you're not using it. I've used disposable ones at least a week after activating and opening them after losing them, and they've worked fine.

Barleysugar86 · 18/04/2024 19:21

OP I have totally had the same problem with disposables! I use 10 motives bought from Tesco, they are definitely genuine but I find a surprising number (10% sometimes in a bad month) are faulty. Usually just in that the wick is clearly burnt tasting from the first inhale (although I am superstitious that flicking the vape up and down and around a bit might help this, like maybe it is how they were stored the wick was dry inside, but I have had some really dangerous faults where the battery kept firing and they got really hot.

Anyway Tesco started refusing to refund so I stopped buying there. Testing them in the store wasn't an option and I don't think they believed I wasn't switching them for used ones or something, although I'm really honest and never did.

I switched to batteries and cartridges purchased online instead and its working out a lot cheaper without faults so far.

Whatifthehokeycokey · 18/04/2024 20:00

It's the same if you buy cheap pens from the pound shop: a high proportion don't work.

Tattletwat · 18/04/2024 21:36

As proved by here buy your own oils, stop buying the disposable ones they clearly are shit.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/04/2024 22:22

If you did open and test in store each week you might shock them with how many are actually faulty

I honestly doubt it, @WiddlinDiddlin; they probably know perfectly well they're sourcing/selling crap, but just hope most won't bother to complain and that those who do can be batted off with the usual nonsense

StripyHorse · 18/04/2024 22:26

It's not OK for a shop to keep selling faulty items but...
YABU to keep returning and buying the same product when you have had such a high rate of faulty products in the past. Either go elsewhere or try a different product.

Auburngal · 19/04/2024 11:13

I’m surprised that Britvic, Mars and Coca Cola haven’t put lawsuits on some vapes. As a couple of names are almost identical to the name and font used for their products. Discovered these on litter picks.

Skittkes has been used with a letter or two missing and with the image of a sweet with the s in the middle. Couldn’t find one at the moment.
