It's not really important but some guy on another forum I'm on keeps banging on that kids shouldn't touch a knife until they can use a really sharp one.
No kiddy play doh, no cutlery, no nothing until they're ready to use razor sharp knives.

wot a moron.

cheesesarnie · 31/03/2008 21:51

[hm] what a twat.does he have children?surely they should learn to use a knife by using blunt things first such as playdoh tools etc.id be questionning what he uses really sharp knifes for.sounds a freak.

muggglewump · 31/03/2008 21:51

He's a twat not particularly nice person either.

i ment btw!

cheesesarnie · 31/03/2008 21:51

what forum?

Milliways · 31/03/2008 21:52

My DS used to love that ELC Cut & play food (velcroed together) just because he could have a knife

NoBiggy · 31/03/2008 21:53

why?

muggglewump · 31/03/2008 21:56

Yes!!
That's what I've said.
Not good enough when he knows best (he doesn't have kids and is in his 60's)
He apparently, as does the whole forum who wouldn't dare disagree with him knows knife skills, which mean not giving a kid any knife until they can handle a razor sharp one.

AIBU to want to punch him, hard?

OP posts:
cheesesarnie · 31/03/2008 21:59

nope yanbu.

NoBiggy · 31/03/2008 22:15

Stab him with a butter knife.

chunkychips · 31/03/2008 22:19

I think he's heard from somewhere that using blunt knives can be more dangerous i.e. you need to press down harder and can slip and cut yourself that way and is getting a little bit confused. Not sure it applies to kids though obviously.

BarcodeZebra · 31/03/2008 22:22

We have a saying in Scotland: "Let the child play with the knife. He'll learn."

Presbyterians are hilarious....

Heated · 31/03/2008 22:24

Maybe he's missing an appendage or two in a blunt knife trauma..

scottishmummy · 31/03/2008 22:28

maybe some incident, him, toddler, fish knife - he dances no more

melpomene · 01/04/2008 19:26

but how can they ever learn to cope with a sharp knife if they don't practise with a 'standard' table knife first?

Does he also believe that kids shouldn't ride a bicycle until they are old enough to ride a motorbike?

kitbit · 01/04/2008 19:28

The bloke is clearly a loon. The only thing in the world you absolutely have to do full-on first time is pole vaulting. Everything else has half measures.
Idiot.

NiftyNanny · 01/04/2008 19:55

how are they going to handle a sharp one if they have defective motor skills, having had no practise?

shinyshoes · 01/04/2008 22:16

I watched aprogramme once can't remember what, it was a couple of years ago, anyway, all the TODDLERS, were given very sharp knives to use, to somehow teach them a lesson that if they can use a blunt/toy one they can use a sharp one summat like that, I didnt see the point myself and thought it very dangerous all these toddlers playing with sharp knives.

BTW, yanbu

barnstaple · 01/04/2008 22:26

My dh wouldn't even let me give dd a spoon "until she knows how to use it". How was she supposed to learn how to use it? Truth was, he just didn't like the mess on the carpet (in the kitchen! Carpet!!!) but he wouldn't let me take it up... She did learn - when he wasn't there!- but it took her a lot longer, and still prefers not to use cutlery at all (she's 8) except very sharp knives for cutting up vegetables (which give grandma heart attacks!). It's all very funny.

YANBU. He's a twat and an arsehole. Slug him.
