To not want to be forced to leave 5* review?

Marooney · 18/04/2024 11:33

I've had an expensive cosmetic treatment (microblading). After the first session they whatsapped me to ask me to leave a review, and I said I would after the touch-up session when the treatment would be complete.

Just had that last session, and on my way out the lady asked if I'd leave a review, and could she show me how to do it via Google maps rather than Google. No problem. But then she thrusts my phone back into my hand with 5 stars selected and motions me to sit and write it there and then. I said no thanks I'll do it in my own time and she said I might forget! Anyway she was friendly enough when I left but I'm really annoyed now. I probably won't leave any review rather than mentioning it as I'd like to return for future treatments. AIBU?

If you are very happy with the service then leave the five star review I can't see the issue. Yes she was pushy and annoying you handled it by saying you would do it at home. End of issue.

LittlePudding1 · 21/04/2024 16:45

You like what she did and you want to go back? What's your problem with leaving her a good review then?

You sound like hard work and just want something to complain about. Leave a review saying you felt pressured into leaving a review, ffs get a life!

patchworkpal · 21/04/2024 16:49

Why did you give her your phone?

bows101 · 21/04/2024 17:22

Anyone who forces a review, although I've never had this done in person, if they hassle me by sending emails I automatically deduct stars for it
The reason she has so many good reviews is because she puts pressure like this

We had a carpet fitter do similar to us recently, he then emailed and text me asking me to remember to do it. He has loads of 5* reviews, which is why we used him. Now we see why. We decided not to leave a review at all due to his incessant pressuring, we've also now got problems with the carpet so he wasn't that good a fitter anyway. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'd definitely not leave her a good review based on her behaviour, so cheeky and pushy!

Not sure what wrong with sending a follow up email or text asking to leave a review. It's not like they're pressuring you to leave a 5* review while they're standing over your shoulder watching you do it.

wilteddandelion · 21/04/2024 17:51

I'm petty and would leave one star for that.

penjil · 21/04/2024 17:55

If she is co-ercing you to leave 5 star reviews that badly, it smacks of desperation.

And if other customers are leaving 5 star reviews that way, then the reviews aren't genuine and can't be t rusted, so it defeats the object.

I'd leave a review stating the work was fine, but you were harassed twice into writing a review.

Calm down dear.

This is a forum, we ask each other for opinions, ideas and help.

If you don't like it, scroll and roll on!

FFS!! 😂

ClairemacL · 21/04/2024 17:59

I know what I’d be saying in my review, and which business I wouldn’t be going back to!

LittlePudding1 · 21/04/2024 18:50

@penjil

Pathetic!! 😂

diddl · 21/04/2024 18:59

Would you have given 5stars if left to review in your own time?

Maybe see how you are treated another time & then review (or not!)?

steelseries · 18/04/2024 14:53

Soon this will be illegal. Proposed legislation (the digital markets, competition and consumers bill) specifically prevents the commissioning of fake reviews. Businesses already also have obligations to make sure info published doesn't mislead or deceive consumers.

Yes I was going to say the same thing - traders will open themselves to hefty fines if they carry on like this. The rules will probably come into force later this year or maybe next year.

FeralNun · 21/04/2024 20:29

Hideous. No matter how good the treatment, I wouldn’t return. Treatments should leave you feeling good, not harassed.

It’s very tiring being constantly called upon to do other people’s marketing for them, btw.

Gettingbysomehow · 21/04/2024 20:49

YANBU I'm sick to death of constantly being asked to leave reviews for every damned thing.
If I'm pressured I won't leave a review.
I'll leave a review if I really like the service otherwise no.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 21/04/2024 21:06

In my line of work as they leave I tell people I’d really appreciate it if they could spare a couple of mins to leave a review as it really helps bookings, and that’s it.
I’d die of embarrassment to try to make people do it there and then, that’s an awful practice.

Conniebygaslight · 21/04/2024 21:30

During Covid, my DH had laser eye surgery. The woman on the reception was badgering everyone to leave a 5* review. She was passing her phone around to patients and really getting in their faces, completely ignoring the social distancing rules. It was bloody appalling

L0bstersLass · 21/04/2024 21:46

@Marooney do you have any idea why she preferred it on Googlemaps rather than Google? I'm intrigued by that.

Sorry if it wasn't clear, when I said we'd had similar and then he'd emailed and messaged I was meaning there was a lot of pressure in person while he was there too. At one point he literally asked me to get my iPhone and do it then and there when he hadn't even finished the job! Felt really uncomfortable about it all.

IDontHateRainbows · 21/04/2024 22:06

I'd be leveraging this to get a serious discount on my next treatment.

Ew, this would get my back up massively - and it seems like she already has a ton of reviews so its not going to make a huge difference either!

I have to ask people to review our 'product' at work, I only do this where the user has expressed quite a bit of delight at the product and I apologise profusely for asking. It does make a huge difference to 'the product' if they do leave a review. We also have a way of ensuring users are not asked twice and we tell them that so they know they won't be nagged.

We would not dream of pressurising people to leave a 5 star review or to do it right this second, thats outrageous!

Worth noting though - on some platforms (Etsy is one), a 5 star IS what you should leave if the service/product is as expected. If you leave less than that, the business in question suffers some sort of penalty if their 5 star % drops. This is a problem when people who ARE happy with what they got, leave say a 4 star because in their mind a 5 star is only for service above and beyond the norm.

Of course if you are not happy, don't feel as though you've got what you paid for, then don't leavea 5 star review!

I can see that there may be a disconnect between what different people believe the different star numbers to signify, as there's no single agreed definition.

Some people do just automatically leave 3 or 4 stars and think that this means 'all fine', whereas others see that 5 should be the default and anything lower than that indicates a problem and/or dissatisfaction.

It seems to be a particular thing that people will give 3 or 4 star reviews for very mundane items. It may well be that they particularly object to being asked to review something boring and everyday that they pay very little mind to, but I've seen a number of reviews where people have only given 3 stars 'because it's only an extension lead' or 'it's a pack of biros - you just write with them' or similar.

Some folk don't seem to get the distinction between 'this is absolutely fine and does its job well' and 'this product brings such extreme happiness to my life'. And as for those who just don't 'get' the star numbers at all - where they will leave a glowing review about how very happy they are and then 1 star...

This reminds me of having breakfast in a famous breakfast place (that I’ve forgotten the name of!) in Dublin - which I was in the middle odd eating and was severely unimpressed by. A staff member came round doing a survey and was helpfully filling it in for me - she wasn’t impressed when I was giving her bad scores and explaining why the scores were so low.
DH was finding it very funny - especially when it got to the point when she was trying to stop doing the form so she could ‘go and interview other guests’ (ie ones that would say it was lovely as she wanted!) and I was no, I’ve started so I need to finish so it doesn’t invalidate it for you.
can’t remember the name of the place - it has been open for over 100 years and had once been beautiful I’m sure - but had been massively over-commercialised, was trading on its old reputation and trying to do it as cheaply as possible while charging lots. Horrible breakfast and a big disappointment given it was supposed to be ‘the’ place to get breakfast - we never did go back and dh never let me forget quite how honest I’d been when reviewing it!

Dollenganger333 · 21/04/2024 22:33

Who defines what a fake review is, though? Obviously, if it's been generated by a bot, or is somebody who has never even seen the product... but in OP's case, she did use the service, so unless the provider forced her to write what they told her, I think it's a bit trickier than that.

Dollenganger333 · 21/04/2024 22:35

This reminds me of a salon I used to work in where clients were bribed with discounted treatments to leave good reviews so that the salon could win awards via the good reviews.

Reviews aren't supposed to work this way.

Funny, pretty much the same thing happened to me in hotel lobby in South East Asia last week “write a 5 star review”, pushing for online reviews is common place here but this was next level; seems counterproductive. The only thing I’ll remember about that hotel now will be an overbearing manager.

@leavingAqaba

I bought dd2 a Happy Meal yesterday at McD - and had a similar experience. It was so weird!
