to think that cartoon characters playing with syringes is wrong?

I love Baby TV, but the end credits of Pitch & Potch includes them playing and bouncing a syringe up and down making the liquid spurt out of it, and then playing air guitar with it.

I wish we didn?t live in a society where syringes can be found in public parks, beaches and toilets, but the reality of it is that we do. Whilst cases of this may be infrequent, the danger is quite clear, and as such I don?t see it as appropriate that syringes are seen as toys to be played with.

Am I over-reacting or is it just wrong wrong wrong?

Check the show out on baby tv, Sky 623, it?s at the end of Grandpa?s Gallery segment, about 13.20 and 18.50pm

Or online at player26.narrowstep.tv/nsp.aspx?player=babytv_restoftheworld Just go to TV and search Pitch and Potch.

I sent an email to them earlier, but am now wondering if I'm just over-reacting?

Thanks all

CaramelB

Baby tv? Do babies really need TV?

Blandmum · 31/03/2008 20:33

When I was a child, back in the mostly unregulated days of the 1960, we were given the syringes that the doctors had used to vaccinate us with! Minus the needles, which we would then play with, using them as mini water pistols.

As far as I am aware none of us turned into junkies.

Will your baby remember, do you think?

I rather doubt it. And anyways You'd be in the park with them, wouldn't you, and could simply tell them that they are not to be played with

caramelbunny73 · 31/03/2008 20:35

SAVEME: Not sure if you're being light-hearted or critial? I enjoy doing things with my little one, but also keeping my sanity, so I'm afraid no apologies from me for a bit of TV designed for kids. Try watching it, then criticse me all you like.

I am bemused caramel, that's all. Don't think I'll try watching it thanks, I don't think I'm their demographic.

If we're talking about an audience of babies then it's not likely that they're going to be so influenced by this they make their way to the nearest park to play with syringes, is it?

You are being silly.

DD2 (7 months) watches "My Friends tigger & pooh" just to let me get a bit of ironing done

"DD2 (7 months) watches "My Friends tigger & pooh" just to let me get a bit of ironing done"

Exactly, babies will watch anything, why would they need an entire channel?

is that not Baby tv? oh i see, is Baby tv an actual channel. i have to say not p.c or anything but i dont watch tv - only Big brother and ashes to ashes

southeastastra · 31/03/2008 20:45

hmm not really sure, part of me thinks you shouldn't worry about it, but people do leave syringes lying about in parks.

caramelbunny73 · 31/03/2008 20:47

SAVEME: cool, I needed some other views, that's why I posted.

As the programs on the channel involve things like counting up to 10, recognising all the farm animals through sound and pictures, working out which clothes you would wear to which events, I'm assuming the channel is aimed past the first few months, that or my little one is being a bit slow in development.

I wouldn't expect to see kids programs showing toddlers running accross roads without looking, or babies or kids playing with hot things. I realise it's my duty to watch over him, to explain right and wrong, and what's dangerous, I just wasn't sure that the portrayal of dangerous things as toys was suitable.

Think I'll have a cuppa tea.

LieselBollyKnickers : thanks, I don't see how a bit of TV can be so wrong. I just prefer to put the various kids channels on.

not disagreeing

FrannyandZooey · 31/03/2008 21:12

I;ve got syringes that ds plays with in the bath (minus needle, obviously)

I hadn't thought about it making it more likely that he might pick up a syringe in the park to play with - it is a possibility, I suppose - I will speak to him about it

I am guessing your child wouldn't be unsupervised in the park? I don't think it is a major risk, do you?

MsPontipine · 31/03/2008 21:20

I've just had a look at the end credits of Pitch and Potch and yes I agree with you - an extremely badly chosen and inappropriate item to play with.

caramelbunny73 · 31/03/2008 21:21

thanks Liesel, I realise you weren't disagreeing but I maybe sounded snappy, sorry!

pointydog · 31/03/2008 21:26

hmm, not sure, caramel. Perhaps, yes.

We had medicine syringes when the dds were small and I let them play with at least one. And dd2 got one of those vet boxes that had a pretend syringe in it.

cheesesarnie · 31/03/2008 21:30

franny so glad you said that!my dc play with medicine syringes in bath and sink-they find them great fun.and like pointydog says-you get them in vet toys and doctor kit toys.

caramelbunny73 · 01/04/2008 22:52

I hadn't thought about the dressing up kits, now I do though, I think I had a nurses one that prob had a syringe in it!

I guess that of all the things they could have used in credits there was no need to choose it, but on the whole, no biggy that they did.

cheers all.
