To ask about dry shampoo? Batiste?

I use a lot of dry shampoo as my hair gets greasy the following day after washing it but I tend to use batiste. I’ve recently read that there was proof that it contained benzene which is apparently a cancer causing chemical.

I want to change to something else but which ones are deemed safe? I’ve seen georgiamane advertised as safe but it’s about £17 a bottle 😬

Any other recommedations?

I did just see someone online using a large makeup brush to apply the arrowroot powder (easier for application) which I may have to start doing. Looks better than the herb jar idea. It does tend to sprinkle everywhere a bit with that.

ringoffiire · 18/04/2024 10:28

You can use a bit of talcum powder which will have more or less the same effect as dry shampoo. It just takes a bit longer to rub it in properly, so not ideal if your hair is dark, but it's doable.

@Twentyfoursevenn no smell! I think I bought it online, you may be able to get in a health food store or supermarket otherwise. I have a huge jar of it. It can also be used in place of cornstarch in cooking.

The only annoying thing is distributing it evenly in your hair to avoid looking grey / white - using a herb jar with sprinkler is better for this. It needs brushing out well.

Some people add it to vodka or alcohol to make a spray that quickly dries after spraying (not tried this but you could google it!).

@nodsay Thank you! :)

Washing your hair daily would fix the problem.

What a knobbish response.

ringoffiire · 18/04/2024 10:49

If you do a bit of research online about this, it seems like Batiste have now reformulated their product and this was in the news a couple of years ago.

It's also worth knowing that trace amounts of benzene are everywhere, including in hand sanitisers, sunscreens and deodorants. It's a few parts per million and not generally considered harmful.

You would breathe in more benzene from simply being in a city for half a day than you will get from using a bottle of dry shampoo.

So after doing a bit of research it sounds like this is one of those health scares that has blown up but actually isn't as big a deal as people are making out.

This is quite an interesting article:

Three cans of this hair product are sold every second - but testing has revealed it could contain a chemical linked to cancer. Do the claims about health risks stack up? A cosmetic chemist weighs in.

What a knobbish response.

Having tried dry shampoos - they make my scalp itch and smell unpleasant - daily hair washing is my solution. How is that knobbish?

DrJoanAllenby · 18/04/2024 10:58

If you want to go longer between hair washes use fairy washing up liquid as a shampoo.

It's designed to be kind to hands and is great for itchy scalps and it removes oil and grease from hair without stripping it.

My hair looks fantastic after I've used it.

Comefromaway · 18/04/2024 10:59

I tried it when I had a burst eardrum and it was awful. Mae my head itch and my hair thin.

I've since heard that other brands such as Living Proof & Klorane are good. or you could try Aveda or Bumble & Bumble.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 18/04/2024 11:00

I'm glad to see this thread as dry shampoo makes my head really spotty and sore, didn't really associate it with the breakage of my hair though, I'd put that down to peri.

Do you condition afterwards? If I used Fairy on my hair I'd never get a comb through it!

Oh massive eyeroll! Jesus why not add " HTH"

not everyone can do this

LolaJ87 · 18/04/2024 11:11

Nioxin Instant Fullness Dry Shampoo. The little bottle lasts ages as it goes a long way. It's a salon brand for thinning hair and it doesn't make my scalp feel like Batiste did.

Washing your hair daily would fix the problem.

It doesn't actually, it just stimulates more oil production. If you have oily hair and start washing it every morning, within a day or two you will have greasy hair by lunchtime. Dry shampoo is the only way to absorb the oil, and give a cleaner look, without stimulating oil production by over-washing.

Scorchio84 · 18/04/2024 11:12

I actually have their conditioner (expensive) but I'll have to look for this, thanks

ranchdressing · 18/04/2024 11:14

STAY AWAY from Batiste and look at some of the research on their products. Does not look good at all.

Do you double shampoo (as in, 'lather up rinse and repeat') with a clarifying shampoo?

Interesting. As a a person with contact dermatitis, I can absolutely confirm it is not kind to hands. Looking at the ingredients, I also don't see what would make it kind to hands (or much different to an average cheap shampoo). Also if it is designed to strip the dishes off the oil, why doesn't it do so for hair?
I am honestly not brave enough to try it... fascinating that it works for your hair though.

LolaJ87 · 18/04/2024 11:16

@Scorchio84 it smells nice too! My hairdresser recommended it, but yeah their products are quite spendy.

LolaJ87 · 18/04/2024 11:18

Fairy is often recommended to fade/strip dye out of your hair, so steer clear if you've colour/highlights.

Scorchio84 · 18/04/2024 11:19

They are but like you said they last & (so far so good!) they work... I've abused my hair with colours & extensions

Comefromaway · 18/04/2024 11:20

Same here. Fairy liquid causes my skin to break out and bleed.

Scorchio84 · 18/04/2024 11:22

completely off topic but why or how would you know? Gloves?? Maybe it's just me & my rubber gloves

Do you not think that the op is aware that hair washing was an option. That was not what they were asking.

This could have been me posting, who is physically unable to wash my hair daily. How do you think that comment would make me feel?

Like I said. Knobbish

Washing your hair daily would fix the problem.

Great advice, except it's awful for your scalp and hair health to wash it every day.

Plus who has the time to wash and style their hair every damn day? If I leave my hair to air dry it goes frizzy and looks a state.
