To avoid male buyers on FB Marketplace?

Yohannsd · 17/04/2024 21:17

When listing things for sale on Facebook marketplace I will not respond to a man simply because I don't feel comfortable or safe giving my address out for them to come and collect it. It feels like a risk I don't want to take and I feel more at ease with a woman.

AIBU to ignore the men? I feel unfair but not willing to risk anything

As you don’t feel safe it’s okay to ignore them.

Why did you feel the need to start this goady thread?

Yabu. Put in the description that you wont reply to men because they are all rapists

Why the pass agg? It’s not that all men are rapists but any unknown man could potentially be one. Therefore it’s not unusual or outrageous for lone women to be wary of ALL men. In fact I would say it’s prudent and sensible.

Ive sold loads of baby stuff to women who then send their husbands to collect. So if you are trying to avoid men I don't think your method is 100%.

I tempted to avoid people with the name Lisa as found they never turn up... seriously had five in total... Different ones.... I understand re men but just pop the item outside and ask they pop money through letter box . Easy and simple to do...I've found men more likely to turn up.

I think that if a man had evil intentions towards you - or any woman - the first thing he'd do would be register a fake account using a woman's name.

Londonscallingme · 17/04/2024 21:33

YABU to think this ridiculous ‘rule’ will keep you safe from anyone who wishes to harm you.

Or are you a passive aggressive man using a woman’s user name?

Therein lies the problem with this methodology, surely?

What's to say that a bloke isn't going to turn up when you've been conversing with a woman? Unless you stipulate... which as a woman would be a red flag to the buyer.

If you don't feel safe selling stuff, don't sell stuff. But don't assume all men will attach, don't assume all women are safe, don't assume all women you give your address too will turn up to buy the item vs sending their husband/brother.

Cookerhood · 17/04/2024 21:36

When I used to use Freecycle a lot the people who wanted stuff were invariably called "Claire" or "Sophie" & turned out to be middle aged men. I always left stuff outside anyway & didn't let them in the house. It wasn't that I inherently didn't trust men but it was the posing as women to get the items that annoyed me.

You don't have to give your address to anyone you don't want to. But there are lots of ways for people to be not who they seem. A woman's profile could be a man in reality. It's probably best to avoid it altogether, or arrange to hand over the item in a public place instead.

I always check out the profiles and make sure they have a lot of posts/info so it's most likely to be a genuine account. I look for when the account was created. Nothing is foolproof but I ignore newish/very private profiles
