How to get house smelling nice to sell/show?

Pontie · 16/04/2024 16:44

We are selling our house and about to start viewings. I just want a house that smells fresh. It looks impeccably clean and fresh but we do have young children and dogs. All clutter has either been chucked or put into storage.

My plan is to rent a carpet cleaner, wash throw blankets, sofa covers, cushions etc. Change bedding. Curtains have already been washed.

Keep bathrooms spotless. Keep windows open.

Maybe chuck zoflora in mop water. Wash wooden floors with method floor cleaner.

Maybe bake a vanilla cake when we have viewings but that is obligations dependent.

I personally like some plug ins but know it is off putting to some.

Any products I should buy?

Any additional actions?

Im pretty tidy and friends assure me that my house does not smell but you never know!

I nearly didn't buy my house because the owners had so many artificial scent things going- plug ins, diffusers, the works. Thankfully they took all the curtains but it took ages to get the smell out of the carpets!

Just clean, fresh air and don't let it smell overwhelmingly of dog or BO and you will be fine 😁😁

Dragonfly909 · 16/04/2024 21:06

I did once chuck some part baked bread in the oven before a viewing and those people bought the house 😂

Astrabees · 16/04/2024 21:38

Don ‘t use plug ins. I am VERY allergic to them, and am sure I am not the only one. It would put me off if I viewed a house and ended up with swollen face and streaming eyes.

wateraddict · 16/04/2024 21:39

Sling the dog beds in the car a good couple of hours before the viewings, no need to wash each time, but washing them regularly while the house is on the market is a good idea.

Scent makes me sneeze and I truly can't stand them. Clean the house and open the windows and it will be fine. Good luck!

Plug ins are harmful to dogs.

I used a really lovely room spray which I sprayed lightly onto the soft furnishings before each viewing. It wasn't overwhelming just a waft of fresh and welcoming fragrance

lol that's what you think!
I bet your viewers didn't agree!

Why bother? If you’ve washed and cleaned everything that’s as good as it’s going to get with dogs. No matter what you do, if you have dogs, the place will smell of dog.

Completely agree with this. Dogs stink, no matter if their owners think they don't.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 16/04/2024 22:52

Make sure the dog isn’t in the house for the viewings.

Roryhon · 16/04/2024 22:55

I accidentally discovered the best thing ever for making your house smell wonderful. Scatter a bit of washing powder around - in corners or under units/furniture. It smells fresh and clean. ( It also cleans green slippery flags too).

EconomyClassRockstar · 16/04/2024 22:56

Do you have Pura in the UK? It's a plug in air freshener that you control via an app. There are some gorgeous fragrances and you control how strongly you want them and at what time. Definitely not like a cheap plug in Glade.

I use the lenor spring awakening beads for my bedding. Smell very fresh without being too overpowering.

Good luck with the house sale!

I like Spring awakening too.

PerfectTravelTote · 16/04/2024 23:07

You are way overthinking it.

PickAChew · 16/04/2024 23:09

Go easy on the scented stuff. It's off putting to many people with allergies (plugins make me cough up a lung) and people will wonder what you're trying to mask.

rio2 · 16/04/2024 23:10

Before any one comes fill the sink and a few bowls with boiling water dotted around the house and add a bit of comfort or lenor then remove before they come or when the water had cooled

In real life all if my friends and family use plug ins, fabric conditioner, wax melts, air fresheners, perfumes or a combination of all of these things.
On mn most posters seem convinced they come over with a fit of the vapours if they so much as come within forty feet of an artificial smell.
Going off the majority of people I know in real life I keep my house nicely fragrances and would do so for viewings!

Your friends (the friends you mention on mumsnet) are lucky, then. My allergies, (the allergies that I am now mentioning on mumsnet) happen to me in real life.

Funny that.

What a strange comment.

I completely agree that cheap and nasty fragrances are unpleasant, but if you are thoughtful and use a light touch then it's very subtle and welcoming. How on earth can you possibly speculate as to what the viewers thought? 😂

Plug ins plus zoflora plus scented cleaning sprays plus dryer sheets plus laundry scent boosters plus cake would be like filling the house with 2 dozen radios all turned up to max volume and tuned to different stations.

Horrific.

Totally agree

CadyEastman · 16/04/2024 23:36

Pontie · 16/04/2024 16:44

I may hide dryer sheets around the house for viewings.

God don't do that. You'll probably be responsible for killing off a few asthmatics Grin

I can’t bear the smell of fabric softener. I would turn around and leave.

Some of us have really bad reactions to artificial scents. I have to ask people to blow out candles and switch off plugs ins if they have them on as they make me feel really nauseous. Luckily, most people I know don’t use them them but a few do and I avoid going round.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/04/2024 23:48

@BigWillyLittleTodger love the smell of cinamon

But @Herdinggoats coffee would make me run and puke. It did when I was preg as well - well hg and people walking past me with a Costa take out and heave

Smells are so personal

CadyEastman · 16/04/2024 23:49

Smells really are personal aren't they? I can't stand the smell of coffee either.

Scarletttulips · 16/04/2024 23:57

How do some of you every buy anything?
