Aibu for thinking that Pittas used to be...

...pocketier?

This is the height of AIBU.

Recently started making stuffed pittas after a period of only toasting and slicing soldier style (to dip in hummus). And the pittas I get just don't seem to pocket like they used to.

Maybe I need to perfect my pitta pocketing? Maybe pittas don't pocket like the previously pocketed?

So AIBU? Did pittas used to be easier to create pockets in?

They are very dangerous. Terrible steam burns! 😱

That sounds like a PITA (pain in the arse). Ahem, I’ll get my coat…

Woahthehorsey · 16/04/2024 14:46

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've tried the Warburtons ones and don't feel they taste sufficiently pitta-like.

I may have to resort to home made. I don't have a great history with bread making.

The best ones I've bought recently were from the local Turkish supermarket!

StMarieforme · 16/04/2024 14:54

I sprinkle with water then microwave for 30 seconds. The steak opens them up.

StMarieforme · 16/04/2024 14:54

*steam

muddyford · 16/04/2024 15:04

I thought this yesterday evening. So awkward to make a pocket!

Fizbosshoes · 16/04/2024 15:06

My DS has a pitta for breakfast everyday. He toasts it and then puts butter on one side and eats as if its a piece of toast. I can't decide if he unreasonable for not using as a pocket or a dip! 🤣

Bjorkdidit · 16/04/2024 15:12

Morrisons ones are the best by far and they seem to pocket fine.

I usually freeze them and toast from the freezer. I cut them across the width, but DP cuts down one of the long sides <heathen>.

DogsAreBetterThanHusbands · 16/04/2024 15:22

I find best way to do it is to cut in half (annoying if you want to eat it whole though) then pop in the toaster with the cut side down, the hot air then helps to open them up for stuffing.

Rinse your pitta under a tap briefly, shake off excess water and pop in the toaster. I find the additional moisture helps soften the pitta, allowing it to expand more readily and pocketize correctly

This. Always.

SirenSays · 16/04/2024 15:29

The last pitas I bought were so flat and hard you could have put a string through and worn them as flip flops. I make my own now.

TyneTeas · 16/04/2024 15:45

Aldi in the toaster on the lowest setting produce good enough pockets most of the time for me

No pearls being clutched, but I agree, the amount of hot and steam when you cut into them seems far more than a toaster should be able to produce!

I use the Warburtons soft pittas as they don’t seem to have this problem.

Yep they're great

You should send that in as a tip to take a break /take a shite magazine! You'd win £25!!

Tagyoureit · 16/04/2024 16:43

I now fancy some pitta bread!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 16/04/2024 16:43

I miss the flavoured ones, only see plain and wholemeal now, loved a garlic and corriander pitta.

same here, we have a local turkish supermaket and the pitta and flatbreads are far superior

PoppyCherryDog · 16/04/2024 16:50

Agree but I’ve always found this with shop bought pittas. Then always shocked when I eat out and the amount they get in them.

kitsuneghost · 16/04/2024 16:58

You have to catch them super hot to get a good pocket

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 16/04/2024 17:01

I usually dampen one side with a bit of water and then stick them in the toaster and the steam puffs them up and makes them stuffable.

ExpressCheckout · 16/04/2024 17:07

Yes yes yes OP 😂 I was just thinking this today, when heating a couple up, they are definitely less pockety than they use to be. Or maybe I'm just buying cheapo ones.
