Really struggling to find someone to give me a reference for my passport application. My dentist left and has gone private. I don't know any other professionals. Wtf can I do?

Do you know anyone who’s a social worker or works for the council? A nurse? Even someone who has their own business can sign for a passport.

My friend has his own company which he started some years ago. Even though it’s basically non existent now, he was able to sign my passport because the business is listed on companies house. Anyone like that?

Painauraison · 15/04/2024 16:47

Do you definitely need one?
I updated mine about a month ago and was ready to put in the info for a countersign and it said not required. It was back in 10 days. Is yours an update?

If not, I think you can pay the gp?

Roselilly36 · 15/04/2024 16:50

First application or renewal, if a renewal you don’t usually need countersigned.

urbanritual · 15/04/2024 16:50

I found out recently travel agents can verify, I asked my friend to do it for my son xx

hamjamwitch · 15/04/2024 16:51

First application because my old one is about 15 years out of date

That's still a renewal. First passport means you've never had one at all. Even out of date, it still counts.

Roselilly36 · 15/04/2024 17:04

It’s a renewal, if you hold an expired British passport OP, will make things easier for you.

Yes but they have still asked for a reference

Professionals can't do if they only know you in a professional capacity. Such as if you have friend who is a dr they can do it, but not your own gp
Do you have any friends who are on the list - the list of professionals allowed to verify is huge

hamjamwitch · 15/04/2024 17:17

No , I don't have any friends who are professionals. My best friend works in an indeo gift shop

TakeOnFlea · 15/04/2024 17:19

What do your neighbours do? Your friends partner? Do you have a window cleaner? It's a renewal too, are you doing it online?

PrincessTeaSet · 15/04/2024 17:20

You must know someone who is either in a recognised profession or is retired from one.. what do your friends do for a living? Any nurses, teachers, physios, occupational therapists, vicar, self employed people who have a limited company, vet or vet nurse?

Wafflefudge · 15/04/2024 17:21

Can you ask your children's teacher if you have children.
Annoying they've asked for verification for a renewal.

CottonPyjamas · 15/04/2024 17:24

I renewed my passport last month and didn't know anyone from the professions listed. (My passport was a renewal but I needed a reference for my child's first passport). However, the list of professionals is just an example list. If I remember rightly, there are only two professions they absolutely won't accept. I asked a friend whose job wasn't listed and it was fine.

No I don't know anyone like that

DappledThings · 15/04/2024 17:26

The list is not exhaustive. Most people who are in good standing can sign and tje list of professions is not completely adhered to.

What jobs do any of your other friends do?

hamjamwitch · 15/04/2024 17:27

One works in an indep gift shop. Another does a clerical job

Clerical job is probably fine. Definitely worth a try.

Battenbergsquare · 15/04/2024 17:28

Do you know anyone from a church/similar? Or any Guide/Scout leaders? They can sign it as someone of good standing in the community.

Stressfordays · 15/04/2024 17:29

You literally don't know anyone other then 2 people? I've signed for old school friends who I haven't spoken to in years but had on Facebook.

hamjamwitch · 15/04/2024 17:29

DanielGault · 15/04/2024 16:58

Police?

How would I know a police officer ? There are no local bobbies

I don't go to church. My son didn't go to scouts.

Do you have DC? Any of their parents. It doesn't need to be a good friend, just someone who can confirm your likeness and has known you for at least 2 years.

Afaik you can just ask a 'professional' to witness for you. You don't actually have to know them. I never knew the guards who witnessed mine 😁
