To not particularly have any hobbies?

I enjoy reading. I don’t really know if you can count that as a hobby.

I’ve nothing I really love doing! I like long walks with my family, but other than that I spend all my time either reading, watching TV, doing housework, cooking, or working!

I feel quite boring against some of my friends and colleagues who enjoy quite niche hobbies. I don’t do yoga or any classes like that, I just don’t think I’d enjoy it! Is anyone else like this?

I've never had any hobbies , useless at sewing or anything arty, tried exercise classes and wasn't very co ordinated at those ( tend to exercise at home now) not really into anything much apart from reading.
Not everyone is into all these bigger hobbies plus the cost must put a lot of people off too as most things are not cheap starting out.

isitbananatimealready · 15/04/2024 15:00

Enjoying reading is a pastime, and to me hobbies and pastimes are much the same thing.

GalileoHumpkins · 15/04/2024 15:15

What niche hobbies do your colleagues enjoy?
I class reading as a hobby, I also knit and crochet, sew, and make junk journals.
Do you want a hobby or are you happy as you are?

TunaCrunchy · 15/04/2024 15:17

I’d count reading and long walks as hobbies.

My hobbies are aqua aerobics and my doll’s house.

Catza · 15/04/2024 15:18

Had to look up the definition of the work hobby as also felt a bit lost with this one. Apparently, it's an activity done regularly in your leisure time. So reading fits.
I do a lot of things in my leisure time which I don't consider a hobby - going to the gym, art, walks in nature, theatre and a film at BFI.

Tukto · 15/04/2024 15:19

I never had any hobbies until I retired apart from reading and gardening. If life is busy, especially with children you don't need any more.
For me retiring coincided with DC leaving home and I needed something constructive to fill my time. I had done volunteering in my 50s while working part time and had enough of it.
I now crochet, sew, quilt and upcycle furniture. I'm not remotely artistic or creative but I enjoy them.

TunaCrunchy · 15/04/2024 15:20

I forgot I also class going to the cinema each week as one of my hobbies.

I don't have any hobbies but want to find one that I really really love

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 15/04/2024 16:12

If you feel like you're missing out, try some hobbies. If you're happy as you are, don't bother! I knit, crochet and spin, but I don't get nearly as much time to spend on my hobbies as I'd like. Can't wait to retire!

VickyEadieofThigh · 15/04/2024 16:18

I don't have what I would class as hobbies, though I go to the gym regularly, read a lot (as well as fiction, I have some very specific interests and I collect and read books on these topics) and love travel.

BingoMarieHeeler · 15/04/2024 16:20

You sound content tbh and that’s what counts. Would you agree that you’re content? If so, so what. Your hobbies are cooking and watching the telly! Sounds great to me.

spriots · 15/04/2024 16:25

I'm the same way - I enjoy reading and cultural things like art galleries, theatre, museums but I don't have anything I would class as a hobby. I don't get involved with my local amateur theatre for example even though I enjoy their shows.

For me, I think a lot of it is that I really enjoy my work and get a lot of personal satisfaction out of it.

Bella43 · 15/04/2024 17:52

I think reading, walking and cooking are definitely classed as hobbies - they're my favourites too. I'm a very quiet person and I love quiet things. I enjoy going to libraries, museums, coffee shops and I love meals out. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Do what makes you happy. You sound like a lovely person.

PassingStranger · 15/04/2024 18:26

People who have hobbies are more interesting.

NeedToBeStrongStepAway · 15/04/2024 18:29

Never wanted a hobby.
I love to clean and organise. That's my ' hobby'

TunaCrunchy · 15/04/2024 18:56

Don't worry about what everyone else is doing. Do what makes you happy.

I remember my therapist saying that to me on my last session. I had to make a pie chart of my life and include some hobbies in it. I worried that swimming and going to the cinema wouldn’t count as they were ‘boring’. She said what others think doesn’t matter, if I like to do them then that’s good. That was about 9 years ago and I can still remember the conversation.

easylikeasundaymorn · 15/04/2024 19:39

I find it weird when people say they don't have any interests, but you clearly do. All of the things you've mentione count as interests/hobbies to me. A hobby doesn't have to be 'niche' to be interesting, if anything the fact that so many people enjoy the standard/usual type ones suggest they have broad appeal.

We had to do a session on something we are passionate/enjoy doing in work recently and I'd say the vast majority were along the lines of the very standard 'reading/cycling/baking,' variety rather than anything earth-shattering. TBF that could be because nobody wanted to stand up and treat their colleagues to 5 minutes on their passion for extreme BDSM with Shibari knots demonstration at 11am on a Monday morning but I think most people just have fairly standard interests. If you wanted to branch out you could expand on something you already like - e.g. if you like long walks could try hiking to famous beauty spots and putting photos online (even if just for you/close friends), depending on what you like to read could join a book group or go to a convention/talk at your local book store, cooking could try a cookery class or new type of recipe...if you want to learn something new could try a podcast or language app while you're doing the housework.

But only if YOU want to, not because you think you should to impress someone else!
