To not go to a&e?

heartmugoftea · 15/04/2024 13:18

I'm 36, otherwise healthy. I've had chest pains since Friday, DH thinks I should go to a&e. I choked on my drink either weds or Thursday and coughed for a good few minutes quite violently.. could that just have caused this persistent chest pain?

I was gonna say indigestion or reflux when I read your op! I get the swallowing issues when mines bad, and can almost choke. Have you tried taking anything that could help? Mind you 4 days is a long time, best to be checked.

BeaRF75 · 15/04/2024 18:19

Not an accident.
Not an emergency.
Seems pretty obvious....

monicagellerbing · 15/04/2024 18:31

Sounds like gallbladder to me

CaraMiaMonCher · 15/04/2024 18:35

Is it sharp? Achey? Burning?

Localised to one particular place that you could point to? Or generalised muscular soreness of your whole chest wall?

Axx · 15/04/2024 19:56

How are you?

Is it an accident? You said No.
Is it an emergency? You said No.

Should I go to accident and emergency? Erm - no.

heartmugoftea · 15/04/2024 21:59

I managed to get a call back from my GP. He said it could be "acid related or a number of other things" (reassuring.. not) has put through some tablets to help with the acid and said if it gets worse to go in and see them asap or a&e. They're quite a good surgery in that they often have same day appointments.
I'm exactly the same the chest pain is there all the time and I've notice that the middle of my stomach in the centre of my rib cage is very tender. I also just feel so full. I don't know if those symptoms are connected or what really. I'll see how I am tomorrow I suppose but I just feel really anxious about it.

heartmugoftea · 15/04/2024 22:01

@CaraMiaMonCher I'd say it's achy and occasionally sharp. It's all over my chest wall but more so in the centre.

@QueenCremant no weight loss, if anything weight gain and persistent bloating Sad

OP posts:
orion678 · 15/04/2024 22:05

Could it be gallstones? Can be triggered by eating and leads to bloating and heartburn like pain which for me radiates up towards my chest and to my back. Also leads to tenderness under my ribs, but a bit to the right not quite in the centre.

Armychefbethebest · 15/04/2024 22:06

I had a heart attack aged 35 , a few days before sore jaw thought I'd slept on it funny. Then started feeling sick and the last few hours an intense pain like petrol set alight on my chest, better to be safe op, I actually apologized to the very confused paramedics who did 3 ecgs just to be sure

heartmugoftea · 15/04/2024 22:12

It's going to sound like I'm lying but my dad had a heart attack in his early 30s (he blames stress as my brother was a newborn and unwell) and my sister had to have her gallbladder removed as an emergency operation.
Argh I'm worried now. Would a simple ECG detect a possible heart attack?

OP posts:
Mnk711 · 15/04/2024 22:16

Maybe gallstones, sounds similar to my early attacks. If you're really worried just go to A&E. But if you can better to take the tablets from the GP and see if they help first.

Armychefbethebest · 15/04/2024 22:16

Didn't mean to worry you op, my dad had one at 26 and another at 41 in the genes for us. An ecg picked mine up so was picked up and had a Stent in place within 90 minutes, it's better to be safe than sorry and womens symptoms often are different to men's.

Moidershewrote · 15/04/2024 22:18

I was regularly having pain and bloating episodes like this in the year or two before I finally gave in and went for gallbladder removal surgery (privately, luckily).

HesterPrincess · 15/04/2024 22:19

111 will just send you into A & E anyway. This way they can do bloods and you'll get an answer. But be prepared for a long wait - I've got a condition that often means intense chest pain during a flare up (costochondritis) and have never once been told off for attending but I never let 111 send an ambulance. Once they triage you with an ECG and it's OK, they'll make you wait a very long time for blood test results. GP's simply aren't equipped for diagnostics like this so A & E is often the only option.

Take a charger, a book, some drinks and prepare for a long night.

Thriving30 · 15/04/2024 22:23

You need a chest xray as you may have aspiration pneumonia or it could be something cardiac like you say.
It's an a&e job I'm afraid

TheShellBeach · 15/04/2024 22:26

You must go to A and E, especially as you have a family history of heart attacks.

And yes, an ECG will show a heart attack.

ballstomonty · 15/04/2024 23:41

Heart attacks in women present like indigestion or heartburn that dosent go away, so you should get checked out plus you have a family history. The well known symptoms of heart attack are generally how it presents in men. Which is why women's heart attacks are often missed because people generally won't go to a and e for indigestion symptoms.

neilyoungismyhero · 15/04/2024 23:54

The first message which comes up on my GPs number is 'if you have chest pains, hang up and dial 999'.
Don't go with random advice on an Internet forum although you have asked for it. None of us know how bad your situation is. It's not an accident clearly but Madam know it all from Staines has absolutely no idea whether it is an emergency or not.

Lovethistimeofyear · 16/04/2024 00:00

Why are people on mumsnet so reluctant to advise people with serious symptoms to access emergency medical help?

It isn’t people with persistent chest pains who are causing issues at the front door.

Go to A&E.

Itsokish · 16/04/2024 00:07

Op if you are still feeling unwell I would advise you to go to AE .Sounds like reflux but get checked out.

jennylamb1 · 16/04/2024 00:08

Yes, agree with recent posters, just go, it's not a weekend and I'm sure they'd be happy to triage you and get you under further investigation if medically assessed as such.

Maybemaybeebee · 16/04/2024 00:16

Yes, go to A&E especially with the family history.
I had very similar symptoms and was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. However, the chest pain was centre of the chest near the bottom of the rib cage. I had the bloating, feeling full and feeling sick all the time as well.
Good luck, hope that you get seen.
