Shoes on or shoes off?

Asheyr · 15/04/2024 11:05

I often hear how no shoes in the house is a stereotypically Asian thing.

We have had a lot of plumbers, builders and estate agents in and they have without fail all taken off their shoes unprompted. Even the Estate agent lads in their very early 20s.

Our pales floors are currently spotless as we are selling so that may encourage this.

We are no shoes mostly but occasionally allow shoes in the kitchen if we are going back out/doing a big bin job.

What about you?

We are mostly shoes off. Certainly for family/friends. We all have slippers.

If someone is doing a job shoes may be required although my preference would be they provide shoe covers.

Saying that I hate taking shoes off in others houses as I dislike walking bare foot or in socks.

This gets asked all the time, and it's usually 50/50. I am in camp Shoes Off. I think it's incredibly rude not to offer to take your shoes off when going into someone's house.

We generally take our shoes off. But I don't insist on it for people coming in briefly and not walking on the cream carpet - for example, this morning my PILs came to pick up DD2 as they help us with childcare on a Monday. They were here for less than 5 mins and came into the living room (hard floor with a dark rug) and I don't expect them to take their shoes off for that.
They'd have taken them off if they'd had to go upstairs though (cream carpet up the stairs and on the landing).

If you’re wearing shoes in someone else’s house you’re rude as fuck.

Well, not if you know they don't mind!

Peonies12 · 15/04/2024 13:43

I think you should always ask / offer to remove shoes. We have hard floors downstairs so I'm not so bothered about shoes off downstairs, but definitely upstairs.

VenusClapTrap · 15/04/2024 13:47

Shoes off, on the whole. Kitchen and utility are a grey area though; I often leave mine on in there if I’m in and out, especially if the weather is dry. In wet muddy weather though, I’m quite strict about everyone coming in through the utility room and peeling off all wet/muddy coats/footwear/bicycle spandex in there before entering the rest of the house.

I never ask guests to remove their shoes though. I leave it entirely up to them.

kitchenhelprequired · 15/04/2024 13:50

Shoes off. Have lived in Asia but we've been a shoes off household since way before then.

PinotDragon · 15/04/2024 17:36

Shoes off here. Have a couple friends who don't when they visit; it doesn't bother me enough to ask them but I do feel a bit weird about it. Especially as they bring round their crawling baby.

Justcallmebebes · 15/04/2024 17:43

Shoes off. Always. Wearing outdoors shoes inside is disgusting. I'd never heard of it until I came to live in the UK

NeedToBeStrongStepAway · 15/04/2024 17:47

Shoes off. I have a huge family as does dh and only one family members house has shoes on.

changedusername190 · 15/04/2024 20:00

we use plastic shoe covers so that we don't have mess.

Sheknowsaboutme · 15/04/2024 20:01

Shoes off. Ive spent thousands on Amtico flooring and want to to look its best.

Mumaway · 15/04/2024 20:03

Shoes off, always. We have guest slippers (nice ones for individual family members, cheapo disposables for any other guests that want them), and shoe covers for tradesmen etc

TheChosenTwo · 15/04/2024 20:03

We are a ‘however you feel comfortable’ house. Hard floors downstairs and no crawling babies - I personally always take mine off but I keep my floors very clean, hoover the downstairs multiple times a day (one of those cordless ones, I’m not plugging in and out every 5 minutes 😂) and the wood is mopped twice a week and the tiles are steamed at least twice a week, my pet peeve is gritty bits of anything on the floor.
All of us living here prefer shoes off in the house.
i don’t care whether or not visitors take theirs off or keep them on.
I don’t mind taking mine off either when I go to someone else’s house but if you insist on it at least have the decency to have clean floors!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/04/2024 20:05

I rather hedge my bets and take my left shoe off whilst leaving the right shoe on.

Although once, when hurried, I've done the reverse!
How we all laughed!
No harm done.

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/04/2024 20:11

We wear slippers but I wouldn't inconvenience my guests nor expect them to remove their shoes. If elderly people, those I don't know well or guests dressed up for a party were here I would keep my shoes on so that they didn't have to worry about feeling awkward.

IF your left sock has holes in I'd suggest you review your default position

Hopingtobe4 · 15/04/2024 20:19

I take my shoes off in my house but I don't expect guests to.

I will ask on initial visits to someone's house but I think unless you have cream/light coloured carpet you're being ridiculous. I only know one person who makes you and they don't have cream carpet or very clean floors so I don't know why tbh.

Thursa · 15/04/2024 20:24

I’m not bothered. Whatever you’re comfortable with. We have 3 dogs and a cat. Tile floor in the main living area, and it gets bloody cold in the winter. I don’t wear shoes in the house but that’s for comfort not cleanliness. We have 2 hoovers, a carpet cleaner, and a floor cleaning machine, so any mess is quickly dealt with.

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 15/04/2024 20:25

Shoes off, always.

We all have slippers for the house and we have slippers for guests that I kept here and we have a slipper basket for guests to wear and then are washed when they leave, we also have shoe covers for trades/workmen.

The dogs are trained to stand on the door mat and have their paws wiped when they come in.

Its rude to not remove your shoes when entering the house.

geoger · 15/04/2024 20:26

No shoes in our house. Shoes off on the doorstep and it’s either slippers or socks - no bare feet tho as I don’t want sweaty feet marks on my floors.
We’ve got slippers for family and disposable slippers for guests.
I take my own slippers when visiting friends and family

So you say. Funnily enough your opinion is not shared by all.

Well done, I wondered who would spot that ...erm 😳

SaltyGod · 15/04/2024 20:31

Shoes on in my house please.

As directed at the houses of others, as they prefer, but I can’t remember the last time I was asked to remove them

JustRingJoeDuffy · 15/04/2024 20:39

Shoes off. I bring slippers when I visit friends and they do the same when they come to me.
I keep slippers and flipflops for thoss who want them. Though I dont really get so many visitors as no family live locally.
