Is it just me? I loved the longer Bluey episode but I kinda think it's a shame they didn't move. They could have done series four around them settling into a new place and making new friends etc.

Am I the only one who thinks them staying put was sweet but the wrong choice?

All those kids in the real world scared of moving and then watching Bluey get a reprieve. It’s not remotely realistic and makes it harder for children actually dealing with moves. Strange choice of storyline.

YouveGotAFastCar · 16/04/2024 04:16

Bluey would have been over if they moved. The creator has been open that he wouldn’t create a “new” world of new characters, or move them to the US, or whatever.

I’m glad they didn’t move. It is unfortunate for children who are actually moving, but sadly one of those situations where you have to pre-watch and maybe decide to swerve the new episode if it’s not going to help your home situation, or prepare to talk about it. Winston’s Dad did move, so that could be a talking point.

I love Bluey, but it can’t teach all the parenting points. There’s been a lot of comments about not just “leaving” Brandy infertile, too. It’s a show. A brilliant one, but just a show.

Florrieboo · 16/04/2024 05:16

I am glad they didn't move, it is a cartoon, a cartoon where dogs talk and walk on hind legs and drive cars and so on and so on. As an adult I love it, I love the messages in the episodes but people can't lose sight of the fact that it is a beautiful Australian cartoon that speaks on lots of levels but isn't realistic or real in any way. Camping is the episode that gets me every time, I cry every time I watch it, while still realising it is a cartoon...

This episode was mentioned on Radio 2 this afternoon. Why was it such a big deal? (Have young adult dc so Bluey has passed me by).

Bluey is brilliant, the only show I'll happily watch with my DC rather than tolerate. DH and I have been known to watch new episodes after they're in bed so that we can watch them uninterrupted.

It does that thing the Simpsons (used to?) to so well of being both for the kids and the adults at the same time, lots of layers.

There's three series of seven minute episodes, but this is half an hour and so the biggest episode to date. I imagine there'll be a film now this has gone well.

pumpkinpiee · 16/04/2024 07:22

I’m glad they stayed, more often than not moving for more money/‘a better life for the kids’ is what parents think they are doing when in reality it’s serving their own interests more (eg more money). Provided a family has a house and financial security where they already are, in my opinion it can sometimes be detrimental to children to have their lives ripped apart at such a young age. Not to say that this is always the case and some children are resilient and make the best of it, but not all do and this can have a lasting impact. I’m not speaking about just moving house, but moving to a completely new area/new school.

My parents moved us to a different country when I was in primary school and I’ve honestly never forgotten how upset I was at losing all my friends, and everything I’d ever known. The episode brought a lot of those feelings back for me, but I was glad they stayed in the end and Bandit realised what was best for his wife and kids.

goldenlloyd · 16/04/2024 09:12

I didn't not like this episode, but it really felt much more like one for the grown ups. It didn't really hold DCs interest, and it wasn't the length of the episode but all the adult conversation and concepts, I think.

The bit that really choked me up was when Bluey told her class she was moving and they all crowded round her, howling. I really didn't see how they could keep the show going by dragging them away from the loving community they had created, so wouldn't have thought there was any option but to keep them there really.

Because it's 28 minutes of love and comfort.

Do you think people don't know it's a cartoon because we're questioning a decision in the plot line?

OP posts:
Florrieboo · 16/04/2024 09:17

No I realise everyone knows it is a cartoon but plots don't have to make sense in shows like this. People go a bit crazy over Bluey. I watched the first episode the day it aired here in Aus, I have been a fan from the start but I still don't go so deep into it like so many others do.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 16/04/2024 09:20

I’d have liked to see them move into a camper van and do a lap of Australia or travel for Bandit’s job before returning to their old house and friends and family. So much scope for storylines in that!

Imagine how many big peanuts/prawns/pineapples they could see!

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 16/04/2024 09:24

The real life me was more concerned that they got a good price for that house That reflected what it was really worth. I mean it's a world famous property that millions lust over! No idea why the dogs with no eyes gave that opportunity up! Though I guess it must get annoying with all the fans turning up to have a look and take photos.

Did I miss this earlier in the thread? Probably because I can’t believe it hasn’t been posted yet.

I LOVED the ending. We often debate moving away to make more money but have a strong network of family, friends and neighbours here. I actually live in Brisbane, 20 minutes from Bluey’s house so it felt especially pertinent!

@Cheepcheepcheep The conveyancing system is actually very straightforward here. The buyers would have forfeited their deposit for pulling out of the sale after the contract was unconditional so in ‘real life’ this does not happen! The contract is usually only conditional for two weeks after it is signed, giving the buyer time to conduct searches, a building and pest inspection and arrange finance if needed. You can withdraw from the sale without losing your deposit during this period on the basis of something these investigations revealed. However, it does not have to be reasonable and you don’t have to prove it to the seller so effectively you can just change your mind in this two week period.

Needmorelego · 16/04/2024 09:34

@DifficultBloodyWoman I love that listing!
"layout that doesn't make sense" (or words to that effect 😂)
I don't know the UK£ to OZ$ exchange rate - but that's an expensive house!

ArnoldArnoldArnoldR · 16/04/2024 10:08

I'm glad they aren't moving, because I don't want to tolerate a world without Lucky's Dad or Wendy!

Yes, prices here are fucking crazy. But it has all happened in the last few years so if you were fortunate enough to buy more than 8 years ago, you’ve basically won the lottery. And everyone else is screwed.

ineedastrongercoffee · 16/04/2024 10:14

I loved the episode. It was brilliant, we all laughed like drains when Strike came crawling out of Wendy's garden after the wedding.

I was so surprised though, my 5 year old daughter got upset and asked if we were moving (we definitely aren't), it took me a few minutes to convince her though.

I'm really glad they stayed, we love all of the additional characters. Cricket is my favourite episode so I'd be really sad not to see Rusty anymore

NotHeard · 16/04/2024 10:16

It was a hard episode for us. We moved 2 years ago - same city but the other side. My eldest DC is still struggling with the move and on a daily basis I find myself questioning if we did the right thing Confused
Lots of tears in our house watching this episode.

I agree that I don't think the move was right for the Heelers because they were moving so far away and they have so many connections in that area. Not just friends, but family too - the girls are growing up close to grandparents, aunts & uncles, cousins (especially with Rad and Frisky staying). I could kind of understand the move more if they were moving nearer to Chilli's dad and sister.

That said, for the children viewing it was probably a poor message - is giving false hope to children who are moving but who don't want to.

I think it would have been better to have a moving story, but not the Heelers. One of the friends could have moved and it was sad for Bluey/Bingo/the friend at the time. But then show the friend making new friends and settling in well to their new life etc. And the Heelers emailing/FaceTiming, coming to visit in the holidays etc.

I questioned the conveyancing system too. I wondered if maybe they packed everything into storage because they were moving inter-state, and were going to go and stay in the new city while looking for somewhere to buy, so they weren't as far down the line as it appeared. Or maybe I'm just too invested 😂

SD1978 · 16/04/2024 10:19

I don't think it was the best story line for a kids show. With the COL crisis as it is now- many parents having to make the really tough decision to need to move for jobs or because they simply can't afford where they are. Giving young impressionable children the idea that it's as simple as if you don't really want to, you don't need to, seems a tad too simplistic.

Breaktimebitches · 16/04/2024 10:22

@Florrieboo oh Camping is my favourite episode too. I’m crying just thinking about it.
The idea of special people coming into your life, even it’s for a short time.
As adults we get that, we all have those special people in our hearts. For kids, an important lesson to learn, enjoy the moments, they won’t last forever.

Grumblevision · 16/04/2024 11:36

SPOILER ALERT, bloody hell. 😆😆😆

AhBiscuits · 16/04/2024 12:21

I also think Brandy's pregnancy could be a bit gutting for people who are unable to conceive. It was showing the reality, that not everyone gets what they want.
A guess childless people aren't that likely to be watching Bluey tbf.

Trainstrike · 16/04/2024 20:57

I think people are misinterpreting the lesson - everything unfolded as it was supposed to which ultimately was a sequence of events which led to the ending that Bluey wanted. "We'll see!" The message was to accept that we can't change most things but it doesn't matter because something that seems bad can actually turn out good.

If Frisky hadn't run away they wouldn't have gone on the adventure which resulted in the penny being wedged in the telescope, and the dogs who can't see wouldn't have seen the house with the pool! Everything that happened at first seemed bad but ultimately with a bit of "we'll see" it turned out fine.

Shaketherombooga · 16/04/2024 21:05

I’m glad they didn’t move! My parents nearly did this and it fell through last minute and actually we were all so happy and relieved!
Oh, and about 2 years later made the move for the right reasons…
I get that there are parents uprooting kids for all sorts of reasons, but not always for the best so it’s good to show that it doesn’t always have to be the way the grown ups want…

Shaketherombooga · 16/04/2024 21:06

I was also a bit ‘what???’ Over the fact they’d emptied the house and then I remembered, they’re cartoon dogs…
