Anyone for Tennis?

Hi!

Want to get your views on this!

I play tennis - in a tennis club with women/men my own age! I'm 49 but a youthful and lively person, have 3 kids who are early teens.

The thing is, I played a tennis game with the younger crowd in work last summer and we went for drinks afterwards. Ended in a pub crawl. It was great fun! However, they are asking again, particularly one male work colleague who is 28. He keeps saying "we should play tennis again" and I kept brushing it off as I now feel a bit self conscious about it! I feel they should work away themselves - which I have hinted at but he said again last week "let me know a Friday you are free, even to play singles". He is in my office and we get on well, really respect him and we have great chats! I recently lost my father 😭 and part of me thinks should I just enjoy fun when I can.

I may get a promotion/end up being their boss (it seems likely!) and part of me wants to not feel responsible for the social life in work and create some distance in case I will be the boss.
But another part of me wants to not let go of the fun time/pub crawls that I enjoyed at that age. But I also think I need to start acting more mature for my age! Am happily married and we have a great home life but I also really enjoy people/socialising.

I also wonder why he would want to hang out with a person of my age?! I texted my husband about going to play singles with the younger guy and he thought it was no problem - just a friendly tennis game. Last time I had to get the bus with the young guy at work and I felt really self conscious about it as it was weird hanging out with someone this age but I did it just to be nice! This time I just want to say no as it feels wrong on so many levels for some reason, but I'm glad they have also included me too.

Am I overthinking this?

Go for it - it’s just a game of tennis. I’m sure you can make him understand that you aren’t interested if you have to. I’d love to have some younger friends. Everyone in the office where I worked was younger and it was great.
