To feel The World has gone mad

Waking up to the news stories this morning about the Iranian ‘attack’ against Israel and the possible retaliatory moves that could ignite a significant escalation plunging the world into chaos, the Brexit food tariffs that could diminish the variety of produce for sale here and it’s making me wonder what exactly is there to be positive about at the moment?

Do we all just avoid the news and collectively bury our heads into Netflix and Disney+ and hope it all goes away? Because right now the world and this country feel very heavy and quite dark no matter how hard I try to be optimistic. Anyone else?

When will we catch a break?

Now imagine it’s 1990. You don’t know about Iran bombing Israel as you haven’t listened to the news this morning so you go about your day unaffected. Maybe you watch the six o clock news and hear it then but then you go back to what you were doing. World has always been like this- there was just no 24/7 news cycle to make everyone disproportionately obsess about things that don’t directly affect them and that they have literally no influence over or capacity to influence.

Koptforitagain · 14/04/2024 09:37

I hear you @Onand . The world has gone mad! When will men human beings ever learn to stop it?

Everywhere you look is crazy, from our country, the NHS, potholes, trans, wars, etc., batshit crazy times.

Yes I know potholes aren’t like wars, but it’s just a sign of the low our country has reached.

The world has always been like this, it’s just that now we have much easier access and more exposure to news in the moment, as well as SM and online goes in which we can discuss and dwell on the issues.

Focus on having a positive impact in/on your local area. There's nothing you can do about Brexit or Iran, but there'll be something shit in your local area that you can directly influence and make better. Do that. It'll make you feel better and everyone doing this would make the world a much better place. Global politics has always been a shit show, I think what's changed is lack of interaction with our local area (probably in part because of netflix and screens in general!).

JamSandle · 14/04/2024 10:53

I literally just disengage from it all. My pa said to me the world has always been a bad place, you just have to make a happy corner for yourself or you'll go mad.

There was 24/7 coverage of the first Gulf War in the very early 90’s though.

I remember our twattish boss had it in at work. And l left that work place in early 93

It's 23 years since 9/11 or 33 years since the gulf war. I can remember them think Afghanistan would spoke Iran into world war 3. The Middle East has always been unstable, but Iran doesn't want a drawn out war it's likely to be a Cold War of the US defending Israeli (why oh why is another question) and Iran shooting more missiles that are destroyed in the air.

As for BREXit grow your own or buy what's in season it's so much healthier and better for the planet!

Turn it off and carry on with life. I promise you’ll feel much better for it.

Offcom · 14/04/2024 11:10

I remember in May 1997 how amazing it felt that Labour had been voted in. Clinton was in the Whitehouse, the first dotcom boom was happening, things felt bright. I do wonder if there will be a sense of optimism again.

It’s a lot to live in the always-connected age isn’t it. Amazing to have video chats with family who are thousands of miles away, exhausting to know about stabbings, shootings, natural disasters as they unfold, and especially to see the day-to-day impact of war on civilians.

I remember it well too. The weather was glorious, so warm and sunny, and there was a definite buzz in the air. Everyone was smiling and there was a sense of excitement, of better things to come.

Afghan was different because they didn’t threaten nuclear war, Middle East conflict has usually remained localised but the Israeli situation is a whole other ball game. Iran showed their hand last night, something they have never done before so it does feel unprecedented.

As for growing my own veg, I rely on M&S or Sainsbury’s because my apartment building doesn’t have an allotment….At least the nights are lighter longer…😐
