Is there anything wrong with smoking at uni? Does your DC at uni smoke?

OP posts:

Smoking anywhere at any time is wrong.

confusignsgh · 13/04/2024 23:46

Isn't smoking a normal activity for a young person to do?

OP posts:
Crapuscular · 13/04/2024 23:47

Not nowadays, no.

Zippedydoodahday · 13/04/2024 23:47

If you're not bothered about the increased risk of premature death, anti social behaviour or air pollution then I guess it's fine?

EmilyTjP · 13/04/2024 23:47

Smoking is so antisocial nowadays.

These days, hopefully not.

Why are you asking?

Maray1967 · 13/04/2024 23:48

They don’t be allowed to smoke in any of the buildings or in most of the outside space. There will be designated smoking areas where smokers have to stand. Some other students will not want to sit next to them in packed lecture halls.

And yes, smoking is always wrong.

Thepeopleversuswork · 13/04/2024 23:48

Smoking is horrendously bad for you. Anyone under the age of 30 who starts, knowing what we know about it, is an idiot. I’m not sure what being at university has to do with it, it’s just a stupid and self destructive thing to do.

No, more like vaping than smoking.

No, not at all, no one with any intelligence at all is going to start smoking these days

Moveoverdarlin · 13/04/2024 23:49

I didn’t smoke at uni 20 odd years ago and I would be really disappointed / pissed off if my kids did now.

No, not normal at all these days. Funnily enough I was talking about this to a large group of graduates who are now at a professional services firm, and they were all very vocal about being anti smoking.

Irishmama100 · 13/04/2024 23:50

No - if you asked this question 30 years ago possibly yes. But not now.

PhuckyNell · 13/04/2024 23:52

What's with the dc at uni threads tonight?

no one can afford cigs let alone poor students

MariaLuna · 13/04/2024 23:54

Smoking anywhere at any time is wrong.

Oh, here we go again.....

It's still legal you know. Bet you drive a car, how about those fumes? Belching them out while toddlers walk alongside them.

So sick of this new scapegoating.

I smoke, but I'm not belching it into your face.

Grandad smoked, died at 94.

Taxidriverinfront · 13/04/2024 23:55

At £17 a packet it would be cheaper if they did cocaine!

My mother smoked

Died at 53

What's your point?

NewName24 · 14/04/2024 00:12

Not specific to University.

But it's a pretty stupid thing to take up.

Health risks.
Cost is phenomenal
It's addictive
It makes you smell - and, over time other things like affecting your teeth, your skin, your fingers

I really wouldn’t 🤣

TeenLifeMum · 14/04/2024 00:16

how can they afford it?

i was at uni early 2000s and it wasn’t even the done thing then. A few friends smoked weed but very few smoked (not virtuous - we all got hammered every Friday night). I’d be really disappointed if my dc smoked. It causes cancer - something like 98% of bladder cancer is linked to smoking so not just lung cancer. Not normal for young people in my circles.

Yeah, my grandad died aged 82 - basically suffocating and there was a shortage of portable oxygen in London so the ambulance arrived without any so he died due to emphysema. Might have been old but it was an horrendous way to die. Statistically the odds are against you.

rainbowbee · 14/04/2024 00:24

I did. Twenty years ago! The whole campus is smoke-free now. I'm not even sure if vaping is allowed. They also turned the bar into a healthy cafeteria rather than a sticky dark hole with cheap whiskey and dancing.
I kinda miss the old ways.

rainbowbee · 14/04/2024 00:25

Also I think they're €18 a packet now? Who can afford that?! At uni they were a fiver.

Walk up to my local shopping centre at lunchtime when the school kids are out for lunch and most are vapeing.
