ID’d over 30

Onepercentclub · 13/04/2024 21:36

Would you be annoyed if you tried to buy alcohol in a supermarket but, were denied because you didn’t have ID, at the age of 30?

YABU - Wouldn’t be annoyed. Your own fault for not having ID.
YANBU - Would be annoyed.

I would be annoyed but not at the person as I understand they have to protect themselves.

LaPalmaLlama · 13/04/2024 21:38

Honestly I think this think 25 thing is getting crazy. I was in Tesco the other day and some guy was denied a 4 pack of beers as no ID. He said he was 27. He may have been under 25 but I’d have bet my house on him being over 18 which is the actual legal age to buy alcohol.

Pipeskeepleaking · 13/04/2024 21:40

Given how easily my teens can buy alcohol I’m all for it being made harder! Or at least more consistent…The rules really aren’t working AT ALL at the moment. (Not fake ID - no ID owned or requested…)

Musicaltheatremum · 13/04/2024 21:40

My daughter was upset when she wasn't IDd aged 30. She looks very young and made her realise was now looking older. 🤣

Mumaway · 13/04/2024 21:40

I got IDd by the Ocado man, in my own house, with my two kids next to me, my wedding rings on, and plenty of grey hair ....
I don't know if he thought he was being funny or complimentary. I get the Challenge 25 thing, but actually legally it should only be Challenge 18...

theduchessofspork · 13/04/2024 21:41

Ah you will be sorry when it stops

I was ID’d in NY at 35.

That was the last time 🥲

ToBeOrNotToBee · 13/04/2024 21:41

We're getting very close to the American way of judging anyone who dares buy alcohol.

I'm often reading stories of pensioners, pregnant women and those in supermarkets with their children being denied alcohol because of some rules that go way beyond any licensing law.

HappyMuma · 13/04/2024 21:42

I can’t judge how old people are, I assume if they have kids around the same age as mine they must be similar age as me! So I don’t have a problem with being asked for ID because I know I would be doing it if I worked in a supermarket etc.

Holliegee · 13/04/2024 21:43

I’m 49 and have been id’d in Tesco, I was really very pleased 😂😂

Shardonneigghhh · 13/04/2024 21:43

I got id'd at Christmas this year in Aldı. I was definitely not annoyed, i'm nearly 40 😁

fedupwithbeingcold · 13/04/2024 21:45

I got ID'ed in Tesco last year. I'm 53

This happened to me too! I’m late 30s, two kids and wedding rings on. I was absolutely delighted 🤣

hazeydays14 · 13/04/2024 21:45

I can sympathise, it’s annoying as fuck. I was ID’d for paracetamol a few months ago and I’m 31 and not particularly young looking. I look my age, maybe I could pass for 28 😂 I try not to take it out on the shop staff though, I don’t think they do it to intentionally piss you off. I usually find it’s older staff who ID or inexperienced youngsters who are worried about getting things wrong.

I was buying a vape recently (don’t judge me, I’m trying to quit) and the person who served me said ‘how old do you think I think you are’ I just said clearly over 25 as you haven’t asked for my ID. They said ‘I put 26, did that make your day?’ I don’t know what they were aiming for with that one, came across like they were trying to flatter me but clearly thought I looked older than 26 or it wouldn’t ’make my day’ 😅 that was probably the weirdest think 25 encounter I’ve ever had and I try not to go to that shop if I can help it 😬

Gymnoob · 13/04/2024 21:46

I used to get very annoyed. Then I had children. Overnight I went from being I’d every purchase to never. Now I am sad 🤣

ChaosAndCrumbs · 13/04/2024 21:47

Sometimes I get a bit annoyed, usually in the vein of ‘I have a 9yo standing next to me and look over 18, so it’s very clear you’re at no risk of breaking the law’.

However, usually I’d let it pass. I think for me it’s not that I look young, it’s my height and features, so it doesn’t even feel very complimentary.

I did get ID’d for cocodomol and was 🤨 at that as the age limit is 16, not to mention I was blooming exhausted with little makeup in a raincoat and it was in the school day. I had to ask my friend to buy it, which just made it feel like I was genuinely 16.

Spottyhousecoat · 13/04/2024 21:48

I got ID for drain unblocker in home bargains last week it made my day I'm 44!!

It had stopped though, I’ve not been ID’d in about 5 years. Until today 😂😭

I was last ID’d age 34 - and I had my 3 kids with me 😂 totally took it as a compliment though!

If it helps it’s hugely embarrassing when you’re the person asking for ID and get it so wrong. I’ve ID’d people over 30 and it’s very awkward.

MillshakePickle · 13/04/2024 21:56

I was 38 when I was last IDed, buying a vape. Had nothing on me except my phone. Had to get the 18 yo at work to grab me one. She wasn't IDed and it was the same server!

FizzyStream · 13/04/2024 21:56

I was Id'd a couple of weeks ago. I didn't have any ID on me so the manager was called and after much scrutiny (properly looking me up and down, squinting and everything) and a growing queue of disgruntled shoppers behind me they decided between themselves that I looked about 32. I'm 43 this year.

I didn't know whether to be flattered, annoyed or embarrassed 😳 the whole queue was staring at me by the time they'd come to their conclusion. I used to work in retail though so I do get it and didn't make a fuss. But, really. I even pointed out my grey hairs.

SummaLuvin · 13/04/2024 21:57

I'd be annoyed with myself for not bringing my ID, not the server for asking. I never get ID'd at bars/pubs but more often than not at the supermarket so I would be sort of anticipating it.

InvisibleDuck · 13/04/2024 21:59

I got asked for ID the day before my 37th birthday. I wasn't annoyed because the cashier accepted a photograph of my passport that I had saved on my phone. Being denied my bottle of wine if he hadn't would have been immensely irritating though.

(I may look on the younger side for 37, but absolutely not 25, let alone 17! I think he might have realised his mistake after a second look.)

My dad was with me (buying his own shopping separately) and he thought it was hilarious. Said he'd have bought it for me if I hadn't been able to. I used to buy cider and cigarettes from the corner shop at age 13, no trouble! How times change.

TeresaCrowd · 13/04/2024 22:04

I stopped getting ID’d in pubs and clubs years ago (mid 30’s, very clearly over 25) but still do too often in Supermarkets. I know it’s not the individual employees fault but honestly it does piss me off how ridiculous it is getting. I quite often pop in to shops on my way home from places when I’d have my card on my phone but not my full ID/physical cards etc. I don’t think anyone minds being ID’d at 20, but pushing 40 is really ridiculous as it’s quite clear these people are not 18. I’m never ID’d in supermarkets abroad either.
