To ask what career path I should take?

I'm in my mid 30s and just starting out in my career, thanks to being lucky enough to have been a stay at home mum for years. I have a Masters and admin experience, but I'm looking to now branch out into a lifelong career. The dream would be an office job, with responsibility, maybe something involving writing, spreadsheets, reports anything like that. I ideally would like to make lots of money eventually!! I wouldn't like anything sales based though, I think I'd be rubbish at that. What paths could I go down now, and what do you recommend? Or what would you recommend avoiding!

I think you need to give this much more thought. Your dream job description reads a lot like “playing office”

if you want to “make lots of money eventually” I think you’ll need to be clear on what that means by when and also what you are actually passionate about doing, and what skills you have that can add value.
it’s possible, but very hard, to make lots of money if you’re not passionate about certain areas of what you do in the very least. Generally you have to be willing to go through the politics, play the game, and still willing to put in extra hours to be outstanding at what you do to convince people to pay you a high income - particularly if you don’t want to work in sales roles.

Selling is part of my job. I actually don’t hate it, I don’t enjoy when i’m asked to sell something I don’t believe in or to chase clients in a way that I know will not work. Otherwise it’s about creating concepts that I know will help clients and getting a fair price for it - which decent clients understand. It’s creative, relationship based fun and financially rewarding. I also use spreadsheets, write things, write reports and work in an office.

Rather than asking MN I think going through a tried and tested process (careershifters for example) or working with a career coach (there are some specifically targeted at “women returners”) would be a more productive way to get not only an idea of what you actually want but also a process through which tk achieve it.

good luck with this exploration!

Sorry OP but your post sounds like a child imagining a job. You need to look at some job adverts and see what you like the look of. Focusing on making lot of money when you have no experience is also deluded. Considering seeing a career coach as well.

Fair comments! Yes I genuinely have no idea what I want to do and it's hard to know which parts of jobs you'd like before you do them.

Job adverts confuse me and use jargon that somebody out of work doesn't understand. It's also hard to know what trajectory a job has, or where it starts.

Would love to hear other people's paths to jobs or suggestions to finding the right one!

Analyst sounds interesting, will look into where that starts! Sounds up my street Thank you

You definitely need to go to a career coach. Remember that you will need to start fairly near the bottom of the scale in any job you choose.
