Popped into town with my dd to get some clothes for her and thought I would go to the Space NK to grab a couple of bits.... however to do this inwas informed by a security guard to wait in a queue.... populated by children! And not teenagers... children

It has just moved from a side lane into the main shopping centre but have I missed a children's line .... aibu to think the products £££ wise and also more importantly ingredient wise are not for children

I'll go to the one near work where there are definitely no children!!

What's going on ? Aibu to think SPACE NK is better suited to adults

Kids and tweens and teens now all obsessed with skincare thanks to tiktok.

SwingTheMonkey · 13/04/2024 15:53

It sad in the sense that kids don’t need to wear make up or worry about skincare short of keeping clean. But a shop is a shop and anyone who has the money to buy from it is no less deserving of being there than anyone else.

Bluevelvetsofa · 13/04/2024 15:55

I can’t afford Space NK any more. They must have a good line in pocket money.

TikehauLilly · 13/04/2024 15:56

Aah tik tok... jeez.... i think that highlights to me why not to get tikntok...

so great about looking after thier skin but space NK!?

Jeez they could damage it with retinol or any of the acids.

The staff are usually good so let's hope they keep to the over priced do nothing creams (if there are any)

Thanks

@SwingTheMonkey wasn't saying they didn't deserve to be there... but the stuff they sell isn't really for kids

But yeah I suppose they can buy a £150 perfume or £30 eye shadow makeup etc so fair enough

So maybe i stand a bit corrected

Thought it was amusing to grab things I wanted I needed to wait behind 12 year olds so I gave it a miss.

It’s not for you to decide who the products are for though. It is for you to decide if you want to give that particular store your business. The shop won’t care though.

neonjumper · 13/04/2024 16:08

Ive just been there this morning ... St Albans ... and yes you are absolutely right .

They all seemed to be buying from the ordinary range , trying out Charlotte tilbury and lots seemed to have £5 off vouchers .

Also overheard ... ' she's not having any more make up , she's already had lots from here ' said about what looked like an 8 year old girl !

fitzwilliamdarcy · 13/04/2024 16:10

Tiktok is full of 7 and 8 year olds calling themselves skincare “influencers” now. Sephora workers in the US were speaking up a couple of months ago about 9 and 10 year olds destroying the tester displays for Drunk Elephant and fighting other customers for Sol de Janeiro.

Didn’t think it’d take long for it to find its way over here to be honest. Depressing but kids get into adult stuff younger and younger all the time.

TikehauLilly · 13/04/2024 16:11

No I agree its not for me to decide who the products are for

But I can tell u a 12 year old doesn't need a retinol skin cream just because it has a pastel lid and an elephant on it.

I did correct myself after your post and agree they do have perfume and makeup and candles shampoo etc so yeah I suppose there are products for willing children that might not damage their skin

I do hope space nk cares about selling potent products to children.

Anyway my mistake then as I just think of it less of a make up and more of a skin care place

Kids can buy what they want I guess but it seems sad. So much better stuff for them to be spending their money on.

Sephora workers in the US were posting tiktoks a few months ago about their struggles in trying to explain to parents that their 9 year olds don’t need retinol and that it can in fact damage their skin - only to be told that the kids get what they want and to butt out.

It’s all really depressing.

YANBU

I will judge the hell out of parents who facilitate the purchasing of inappropriate and potentially damaging cosmetics for their young children.

Penguinmouse · 13/04/2024 16:21

I’ve seen kids (and I mean early teens and pre-teens) in Sephora and Boots picking up Drunk Elephant. So inappropriate for young skin and also SO expensive! Parents buying their children this stuff is really irresponsible. It’s bad for their skin.

BoohooWoohoo · 13/04/2024 16:22

I was in Harrods Beauty and there were loads of primary school kids there too. They were buying for themselves rather than tagging along with mum.
Unfortunately it’s a trend for kids that age to be into skincare.

There are lots of Sephora employees discussing the mess left by tween customers too.

I am not judging teens who will have legitimate skin concerns because of puberty btw.

Sadie with her skincare

Growing skincare use by children is dangerous, say dermatologists

Dermatologists say products with ingredients potentially harmful to children are growing popular.

Almahart · 13/04/2024 16:28

Bloody hell. My 13 year old asked for Cerave after I tried to fob her off with Superdrug teatree, but this is another level

Piccalino3 · 13/04/2024 16:29

This is so depressing! I was in the Stratford Space NK yesterday and did sort of notice lots of young girls/tweens/teens in there, but was tired and in a rush so don't think I fully clicked.

St Albans is my local store, I'm surprised it was swarming with kids, I have a 10 year old and no way would be spending money on her in there, in my head there's nothing for her in there at all, she's lucky to go into Lush. Guess I'll be sticking to the one in the City then, definitely no kids in there! It's a real worry.

zurg123 · 13/04/2024 16:55

My dd12 and her friends all love space nk. Usually buy a lip gloss or sol de janeiro. They also just like to test the products.

Allthegoodnamesaregone1 · 13/04/2024 16:55

You're right.
It's a massive issue at the moment.

Children are attending hospital with actual burns due to the skin care routine.

Me too. If pre teens are buying this stuff now, what are they going to be ‘influenced’ into spending their money on when they’re 14? Maybe their parents will organise Botox parties when they reach 16?

HummingbirdChandelier · 13/04/2024 17:01

It’s depressing, they’re brainwashed into thinking they need expensive products. Many of which are at best unnecessary and at worst harmful to young skin.

I love beauty products and skincare, always have. But the TikTok influencers hold is so strong: there’s no real fun in it now.

A local beauticians are so concerned about the harmful use of products on youngsters that they are running classes to teach them it’s no good, and how to use appropriate products

suburburban · 13/04/2024 17:01

I think Boots or Woolworths was more my level at their age

suburburban · 13/04/2024 17:02

Or older

Rimmel lip glosses

IggyAce · 13/04/2024 17:05

My dd (18) said kids of today are going to look 50 at 30 given all the products they are subjecting their young skin too.

It was Body Shop in my day. Everyone dousing themselves with Dewberry with those glass sticks.

I did buy my niece (just 13) a Drunk Elephant set for Xmas I confess. I knew it was the thing they all wanted. Tiny tester sizers though.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 13/04/2024 17:09

I took my 16 &12 yo to Sephora in Westfield last week. It was full of 9-14 yo's in white fox hoodies, leggings and Nikes / uggs. As was my 12yo - she was in her spiritual home😂

the 16yo who wears very little skincare felt a bit intimidated I think!
