To feel like I'm being fleeced - glamping

£1,000 plus, to stay in a TENT for 1 week in Devon?
Some are £1,200 for 1 week.
Just seen one for £1,500 for 1 week.
This is to stay in a bell tent in a field.
To me, these are insane prices!!
AIBU to think over £1,000 to stay in a tent for a week is absurd?
I can't afford to stay in a holiday cottage.
Air BnB prices are out of my price range.
So I thought camping might be an affordable alternative.
I just want to go away for a week in this country in the school summer hols with my 2 DC, I want to give them a week away. Devon is my favourite place, used to go there as a child.
I'm not well enough to take my own tent and put it all up by myself, I've got ME and fibromyalgia and long Covid, so I really need a tent that's already erected and one that has a few more comforts to it than sleeping on an air mattress on the floor.
I thought a tent in a field would be a financially viable way to go away with my DC, who really deserve a week away, but the prices are eye watering and completely unaffordable.
I'm not asking to go abroad anywhere....just a week in my own country! But I'm priced out of this! I can't believe it, feel so sad for DC.😥

But the OP doesn't live in Devon - and is going to Devon.

Which is why some people have mentioned going to France.

Yes but I looked it up when someone said they lived in Devon and it was cheaper to take the ferry to France than camp up the road.

But if you live in Devon, as that poster said she did, you also have to factor in the travel cost and time.

The thing that surprised me, given the cost, was that some sailings are already fully booked for the first week in August. Some people must be happy to pay, or did they get it cheaper booking months ago?

Edited

If you are talking about the ferry crossing from Plymouth - yes, some people are happy paying that.

(If you want expensive, look at Plymouth to Santander. With a caravan!!)

But you do get to be in Spain with a caravan.

Well - we're talking about different things then Grin

Camping in the UK is expensive for what you get. The campsites are just not like those in France.

A basic field with a Portaloo can cost £30 per night.

You can get far more for your money abroad on proper campsites.

I'm not getting the sailing to France is so cheap. I just did a search for Plymouth to Roscoff is August for a family of 4 in a car and it cost £670, which is almost the same as the search I did for Premier Inn in Goodrington (Torbay). Then you have camping cost. How is that so much cheaper?

No it's extortionate for what it is.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 13/04/2024 21:23

I mentioned previously, I'd try to go abroad as can be cheaper. But if you are still looking at Devon.....check out AirBnB and Vrbo but then try and find the properties you like on there through google and you are likely to save a small fortune!

I always booked breakfast, kids eat free. A Premier Inn breakfast can mean you don't need much for lunch as it is help yourself to cereal/fruit/pastries/fry up and at around £10 it is a bargain for one adult with 2 kids. They also do a meal deal where you get breakfast and an evening meal at a reduced cost bit I think there is a charge for children. You are right though, picnic on the beach some days or even a takeaway in the room.

I'd actually forgotten the breakfast at Premier Inn was kids eat free with an adult. My DS is too old now for free breakfast.

@ToGoOrNotTo I use holiday supermarket,

Have also booked through https://www.dealchecker.co.uk/

Booked 4 holidays in total to some amazing places all under £400 per person, Greece, spain and turkey. turkey is definitely cheaper and i even got a holiday there all inclusive for £198 a year ago

You are wonderful to share!

I don’t care how basic the accommodation as long as it’s properly clean?

mewkins · 14/04/2024 08:56

I've done the various suggestions on here and camping with own equipment in the UK is definitely the cheapest. It's also great if the weather is good! I camp in northern spain at a nice but normal campsite with a couple of pools. It is not cheap to stay there and the travel there is obviously a lot. I've stayed in other nice campsites in southern france and again it's not cheap. But the sunshine is guaranteed.

I understand those saying go to France but in my experience you will spend more on travel and you have to go some way down the country in order to have better weather, otherwise you take a chance, just like UK camping.

Sun holidays op. Just steer clear of pontins...

1974devon · 14/04/2024 18:19

We go to a static caravan campsite in brittany and it costs less than that.. including the ferry.
Glamping is expensive...I'd look at caravan sites as much easier.

If that is the case, I’m sure op would prefer to work. I know I would.

Piss off love. Everyone should be able to have a break occasionally YES even if they don't work due to no fault of their own. Shocker.

OldPerson · 14/04/2024 18:42

You made the mistake of thinking UK holidays would be cheap.

You really need to book c.10months in advance. You can get a caravan in a caravan park mon-fri for c.700 at the very July beginning or end of school holidays.

You could also take a tent and go camping, especially if you have well-behaved kids. Took my kids camping every year for c.8 years. Never once put the tent up by myself. The campsite staff helped. Other campers helped. Campsites are the friendliest, most helpful places. It's the one place a damsel-in-distress can count on help - and you usually have made new friends by the time the tent's up. They only laugh at you for about 5min before they come over to help.

Teledeluxe · 14/04/2024 18:44

I just bought a shed for £320 from Argos. Maybe I’m missing a trick not to rent it out!

Mrsthingamy · 14/04/2024 18:55

I would recommend the website pitch up
We use it for our campervan, but you can filter it for accommodation- shepherd's huts, caravan or glamping.
I just had a quick look and ranged from £450 to over £1000 for a week in August.

Annierob · 14/04/2024 19:06

I find Haven very good. There is a Facebook page for private owners on the sites and you can get a third off. Staying in a tent is not a holiday; it’s an endurance test, especially if it rains 😊

JournalistEmily · 14/04/2024 19:07

Glamping is a massive ripoff. But pretty sure you can get a week or near enough in Devon for under £1k even in the summer hols

kennycat · 14/04/2024 19:21

We always stay in a cottage frim
cottages.com you can get a discount through mumsnet as well.
we’ve never paid more than £700 for a week. We don’t stay in grotty places but I doubt they are as fancy as some
people expect.
way more space and better equipped than a caravan or tent. And cheaper than your glamping will be!
