To think the price of clothing has soared!

Not talking particularly high end brands. Even supermarket clothing lines, historically cheaper shops, ASOS etc. Hard to find a dress for under £30 and that is often pushing it, usually they are in the £40-60 bracket just for an every day type dress. Occasion wear is probably much more but I’m not in the habit of buying this!

I nipped into Primark the other day thinking they would be cheaper but not anymore.

Why has it gone so crazy?

Well said, Misthios. I actually find high street clothing cheaper today than it used to be. (And lower quality.) I have items that are 30 years old that look better than some of the flimsy new things.

Second hand is the way to go.

And about time too. The sooner we move away from fast disposable fashion and the "wear it a couple of times and discard it for the next new thing" the better.

Totally agree.

For perspective, when I was a teenager, C&A was the go to inexpensive clothes shop and that is roughly what I would have paid for those items then. 40 years ago. I felt I had a bargain when I picked up a paper bag waist skirt for £12 and I wore it until it had holes in it (and I couldn't squeeze into the 25" waistband any more!)

Indeed. When I was a teenager my mum didn’t have any money to buy clothes from high street stores so she made me a few dresses that I lived in. One off pieces - quality fabric, made to measure - was cheaper than anything you could buy in a high street shop.

How things have changed lol.

I agree with this to an extent. I remember buying a halter crop top in New Look in the 90s which was 17 pounds. I remember it because I was deliberating over it then. It wasn't even one of the nice crochet ones that was around at the time but a nasty lycra one. It was standard that a dress was £30 back then in a cheap shop.

I am disappointed that clothes are more expensive again now because all the stuff that was cheap in the 90s like housing, energy and food is expensive in comparison now. Cheap clothing was one of the few joys left. 😫

Soukmyfalafel · 13/04/2024 15:43

I did see a white floral dress in Next today. Looked lovely, but when I put my fingers under the fabric it was completely see through! People go on about fashion wastage, but it would really help if shops made clothes they could actually sell.

Charity shops aren't that great where I am. They used to be and i had some lovely stuff in the past, but the quality of the clothing in them seems worse now and more expensive. I have bought some great ebay items but a hell of a lot of shit too and don't do it anymore. I just buy new clothes in the sales i can try on. It's not really helping the environment if I keep chasing second hand bargains that don't fit and I can't send back. I'm just transporting them across the country for nothing. I think my success rate with ebay declining is down to being fatter now. Never had an issue when I was thin.

Unless not your thing ! But for me - one of peices and the price works

bingboo121 · 13/04/2024 16:00

just told me hysband..the brand of shoes i usually get for the kids are 40-80 pounds, used to find them on sale for great prices like 15/20/25- now the "sale" prices are 40/60/80..for childs boots/trainers.

Beebumble2 · 13/04/2024 16:46

I try to only buy when things are on sale, or a good makes in a charity shop, although that’s often a by chance find. Other than that I think ahead and buy sale items for the next season, so I’ve got good quality leather sandals waiting in their box, bought for £29 in December.

GellerYeller · 13/04/2024 18:03

I follow a 90s nostalgia account on Instagram and they showed an old fashion spread from a magazine. I was quite surprised that the prices (think TopShop/New Look level brands) looked higher than I remembered.
Im sure I’ve said this here before; I still have tops from Whistles/Karen Millen etc. from the late 90s/early 2000s that were maybe £80-100. So would have been quite a splurge for me. I reckon maybe three times the price of the TopShop or Miss Selfridge equivalent at the time. A couple of them are silk though.

BettyBardMacDonald · 13/04/2024 18:30

Beautiful, @Namethattunes !!

StridTheKiller · 13/04/2024 18:36

Get on Ebay! Safer and more reliable than Vinted and packed full of quality bargains!

BobnLen · 13/04/2024 18:43

I prefer eBay to Vinted

Divebar2021 · 14/04/2024 07:39

@GellerYeller

Ive also got some Karen Millen clothes from the early nineties. I may have bought them in sales because I’m not sure I could have afforded them full price but the styling and quality are really excellent. I would be wearing them now if I could fit into them!!!

Ineedcoffee2021 · 14/04/2024 08:04

Shein and Temu are winners for me
Great prices
Have styles i like
Fits me well

Misthios · 14/04/2024 08:27

Shein and Temu... Jesus wept.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 14/04/2024 08:40

Clothes should cost that much, if you don’t want them being made in appalling conditions. We all have far too many clothes.

Have you thought for 1 second about the conditions those clothes are made in?

Misthios · 14/04/2024 08:41

People who shop from Temu and Shein do not care @Rosesanddaisies1 . As long as it's cheap cheap cheap.

Thomasina79 · 14/04/2024 08:43

This is why I shop on eBay. Ok it can be hit and Miss but if something is not quite as pristine as I would like I give it to my local charity shop so it does not end up in landfill in a third world country. I just see it as a donation.

sleepyscientist · 14/04/2024 09:26

I'm loving the current fashion trends (last year wasn't for me). House of Fraser and flannels seem to have had good sales. whilst the likes of river island and Zara have increased in prices I think the designs are better to willing to pay it. Vinted is great for BNWT got DS 4 pairs of Nike swimming trunks for £20 with tags normally around £20 a pair.

Katemax82 · 14/04/2024 09:29

I love vinted. I got an isabel London dress that was new for £1 plus 3.50 delivery and buyer protection. Its gorgeous but very short so my 11 year old daughter inherited it as she's a few inches shorter than me

Some people can’t afford to go anywhere else at the moment. Not everybody has the choice.

It's a bit of an exaggeration based on your experience perhaps. As it is I've heard quite a few negative experiences about vinted itself and also with the whole reseller problem (which is related to vinted).
I'm glad it's been good for you though.

I have stopped buying from Vinted after several poor experiences. Orders being cancelled or just not arriving, clothing smelling of smoke and covered in animal hair, items damaged or sizing not as advertised. I've had a couple of bits from there I've been pleased with but overall it's just too much hassle. Maybe I've just been really unlucky!

Everyone has a choice. Charity shops, vinted, eBay, car boot sales, clothes swap events, make your own. Or just buy less. Most people own too many clothes.
