2 year old sick immediately after head bump - a and e ?

He snatched a ball away from his sister and started running full pelt. He was looking at her while he was running, as she was chasing him and as he wasn't looking, he ran straight into the doorframe.

So he bumped the front of his head on the door frame and the force of that bump, made him bounce off and fall back and bump his head on the floor as well.

Does that make any sense ? He started crying and as soon as I picked him up he vomited a bit.

Then cried a bit more and now seems ok.

I should go to a and e right ?

What will they do there? Just monitor him for a few hours? Does anyone know what they'll do in there ? Thank you.

Yes you should definitely go!

CammyChameleon · 12/04/2024 11:00

Definitely, best wishes to your little one and you!

eagerelephant · 12/04/2024 11:00

I think one vomit, assuming examination normal, they will just monitor for a few hours but I would definitely go

takealettermsjones · 12/04/2024 11:00

Yep A&E. They will monitor for any other signs and symptoms and, depending on severity, could arrange imaging to see whether there is any injury.

SoupDragon · 12/04/2024 11:00

Did he lose consciousness at all?

TBH, I think I'd take him. From experience, they will examine and then monitor him. I had to stay with DS for a few hours after a rugby concussion (but obviously he was able to articulate how he was feeling and what happened - they might want to do more with a toddler).

Merryoldgoat · 12/04/2024 11:00

Does your GP offer advice via a triage? Mine do so I could fill in an online form and the doctor would assess and call back or advise the receptionist to call back and tell me to go to A&E.

If not I’d go to A&E.

No he didn't lose consciousness.

I’d go too. Hope he’s ok.

My 4 year old fell from a swing onto his head last week. He then vomited 20 mins later. He's not really a kid who gets sick so this was definitely a red flag for me, even though he was acting normally after getting sick.

We went to a&e and they checked him over and were happy all was OK, but told us things to watch out for.

They told us it's quite common for little ones to vomit after hitting their head, but best to be checked.

Fingers crossed all is well and your back home soon!

jannier · 12/04/2024 11:06

You always go to a&E if vomiting after banging head

EatSprayGlove · 12/04/2024 11:06

I had this a couple of times, at 9m when I took to A&E who monitored for 8 hours due to high blood pressure upon arrival and when older than 2 where the GP said to just watch and wait. I say trust your judgement, if you think DC was sick from crying, no loss of consciousness and normal you could just monitor closely but if you are at all concerned go to A&E who will probably monitor whilst you wait. At this age its fine to be cautious and I reckon 111 would send you straight to A&E. My instincts at that age were always A&E because of the naps, much harder to tell if a 2yo is sleepy due to the injury than for an older child.

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 12/04/2024 11:06

On a first aid course I did the paramedic running it said go if 2 vomits however for such a little one I would go and get checked anyway I think. An older child could tell you more about how they are feeling, harder to know in toddlers.

Alloveragain3 · 12/04/2024 11:07

Oh and they just asked him questions, felt his head, checked his reflexes - that sort of thing. Nothing like a brain scan!

Auburngal · 12/04/2024 11:07

Yes definitely a visit to A&E. A few years ago I saw a girl stood up in a trolley and it tipped backwards and she banged her head at the back then vomited.

Newname71 · 12/04/2024 11:08

I would take him. Similar thing happened to DS. He was hit in the face with a football and fell back hitting the back of his head. He vomited quite a few times. He was refusing to go to A&E( ADHD, doesn’t do waiting) I phoned 111 and they were insistent that we went to A&E. DS refused and Out of hours GP called and said he must go. 12 hours and a CT scan later…. But it was definitely the right call. X

He didn't cry enough before he was sick if that makes sense. He does vomit from crying sometimes, but he has to be crying for quite a while for that to happen. This wasn't his usual pattern.

He didn't cry long enough before being sick.

That's why my instinct says it's because he fell.

I'd phone the gp to see if someone can speak to you and see him if not definitely A&E they will check him for concussion.

slipperypenguin · 12/04/2024 11:10

Just take him

Mine was 16 and said it felt like the worst hangover in the world for about a week after 🤔. Just to add he’s only ever had one hangover when one of his mates smuggled a bottle of vodka into a New Year’s Eve party 🙄

Just take him. What’s the worst that will happen… you’ll lose a few hours of your life that you won’t get back. But you’ll probably sleep easier tonight 😀

carryavan · 12/04/2024 11:15

Go.
I was told you should be more worried if they didn't cry immediately as that could indicate they're stunned. Plus with the vomiting.

nc22124 · 12/04/2024 11:19

Go to A&E. better safe than sorry
