To just chuck it all in the bin 😖

My house is cluttered. Mainly with old clothes that no longer fit the kids/me, baby items (a bouncer, toys that have been outgrown, that kind of thing), and half empty bottles of beauty products (yep I’m a bit of an addict).

Charity shops round here aren’t interested, the local baby bank didn’t want the things I offered as they’re in need of other items. Listing things on Facebook is a total nightmare as you just get inundated with CFs asking you to deliver (no car) or no-shows.

WIBU to just shove it all in a bin bag and take it to the tip? I know it’s a waste but getting rid of it item by item will take FOREVER. Most of the kids stuff was second hand to start with.

Take it all to the tip. If yours is anything like ours, as well as general household waste they have all sorts of sections for clothes, bedding & linen, plastics like toys etc, and recycle nearly all of it.

Limth · 11/04/2024 14:17

@Bjorkdidit

stained bedding, bobbly towels, raggy jumpers etc - we foster rescue cats and kittens who are responsible for this sort of thing - Can be donated as 'rags' to several charities. Or taken to some clothes shops and exchanged for money off vouchers.

chipped crockery, old worn kitchen equipment, rusty baking trays, scratched non stick cookware - Smash up crockery and use as drainage in outdoor plant pots, metal stuff can be left out for the scrap man.

half used toiletries that don't work for me - Okay, fair enough, just get rid down the plug hole.

cables for fuck knows what - Can be sen off to WEEE or scrap men will take.

shabby looking small furniture - coffee tables etc - A local group near me does up-cycling workshops with vulnerable children and are always grateful for donations of old furniture, even knackered stuff (within reason)

Box outside your house? With a free sign and a post on your local Facebook? That goes well here.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/04/2024 14:20

Clothes can go into the textile banks - your local civic amenity site has them and there may be others in supermarkets, please don't bin them!

Kids toys are plastics - they can go in the plastic bin at the CA site.

Makeup... I'm the same, needs to go in the bin if opened.

MitchellMummy · 11/04/2024 13:49

Jumble sale organisers are usually grateful for such things - even half used toiletries!

No we don't want a pile of rubbish especially opened things .Who knows what someone has put into that shampoo etc.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/04/2024 14:21

Cables - these CAN'T be binned. There is a skip at the CA site for kettles, toasters, etc. - put them in there.

TooMinty · 11/04/2024 14:31

I would Freecycle first - particularly baby clothes, toys etc.

Warburtonthins · 11/04/2024 14:37

Depending on where you live , British Heart Foundation collect from your home , Shelter and the salvation army might also be able to help and some hostels for refugees , hope this helps xx

pippy1958 · 11/04/2024 14:37

Dunelm have a fabric take back service - anything can be donated and they will reuse or recycle. You might have to check that your local store has this service but I think most of them do. Hope this helps!

Alwaysalwayscold · 11/04/2024 14:40

I'd do a car boot sale and tip anything that's left at the end of the day. If you price it cheaply I'm sure most of it will sell.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 11/04/2024 14:42

Vinted
I started using it recently and now I'm often having to drop parcels off!

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 11/04/2024 14:43

Primark also have a "fabrics" bin if nothing else

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/04/2024 14:44

I would( and very recently have) taken quick photos and posted on local selling groups on Facebook and got rid of a sofa free to collector Only took a couple of minutes to upload the photos so you could try that if anything is in decent condition
Charity shops are really selective and I wouldn't waste time especially as you don't drive
Local councils will collect big items at a costs
Yes, I binned lots with a clear conscience as it's outside my norm and the space gained was important

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 11/04/2024 14:45

Chipped crockery - summer fairs are coming up and chipped crockery is perfect for Smash the Crockery stalls.

Local artists may also want them to upcycle into mosaics etc

TheNurdnugget · 11/04/2024 13:40

Why would you take it to the tip? Why not put it in one of the clothing banks at supermarkets? Or do you clean a clothing bin at the tip? I'm confused.

If there's any decent stuff there you could try selling on Vinted. However I understand the want of just getting it out of your house.

She probably means the recycling centre

gettingbackonit23 · 11/04/2024 16:36

JMSA · 11/04/2024 13:49

The charity shops don't want ANY of your stuff?

lol they will literally only take stuff that is pristine and that they can sell easily. They aren’t ‘grateful’ for a load of tat (like my mum seems to think).

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/04/2024 16:41

Do it. Take it all to your council tip - they will have skips for fabrics, an area to leave bikes or toys or furniture that is reusable, and the rest can just go to trash. It is doing no good sitting around your house, and nobody else wants it.

BobnLen · 11/04/2024 16:43

Our tip takes out anything useful and clothes go in the cloth recycling bin so it should get recycled anyway

Lastandfirst · 11/04/2024 16:51

Most tips have a clothing bank as do supermarkets or they do here in Northern Ireland.
Seperate all the clothing into bin bags chuck it all in.

Everything else as someone suggested list for free on Facebook. Also offload other stuff if someone collects ie collects the bouncer give them the toys. People love thinking they are getting a deal.

Good luck it’s cathartic once you’ve cleared a load of stuff

TheNurdnugget · 11/04/2024 17:37

cellfish · 11/04/2024 16:57

Same as our recycling and broken electricals. It's fascinating to see how much 'waste' we export by sea out of the UK

DDivaStar · 11/04/2024 17:41

There are clothes banks at supermarkets or at the tip. Or just take to the local charity shop.

DGPP · 11/04/2024 17:42

Bag up the clothes and take them to the recycling textile area at the tip??

ByUmberViewer · 11/04/2024 17:48

Take the lot to the tip.

Too late now to save the environment anyway.

user1471556818 · 11/04/2024 18:33

I'm having a clear out as downsizing.
Every charity shops in my town currently has boards out requesting no donations.
The recycling shop literally takes things from their collection shed and dumps them in the skips .
All of these shops are full because in my opinion they over price their goods .
Few towns over the charity shops are 3rd of the price and always busy with new items flowing in and out.
The charity bins are overflowing with clothing etc dumped in bags around them
Giving stuff away has been really hard work and as for selling stuff , so many time wasters .
I totally get why people take stuff to the skip and bin it . I've been quite shocked how hards it's been to rehome even boxed unused items .
I'm lucky I have a car and time to drive elsewhere
