Morning all,
My husband has just been hit by a hit-and-run driver on a A road (speed 70). The other car was trying to change lanes into my DH's lane, probably didn't check, smashed into him from and drove off without stopping.
DH pulled over and another driver from a car behind stopped there too telling him that the car that hit him was a commercial vehicle, he saw the brand name. DH took the man's name and car reg to use as a witness if needed.
We called the company to say that their car hit our car and they couldn't have been more blasé about it. They said that their company doesn't drive this type of car. DH didn't have a time to see the car reg or make/model, just that it was a big white and blue van.
I insisted they check with their drivers for damage and they said they would get back to me.
What do we do??

Your Dh was obviously flustered but don’t be too hard on him about the lack of witness details. If you have no other information besides the witness’s name and reg number, both the police and your own insurer can access dvla records to find the not involved car’s registered keeper. That information will mean they can trace the RK address etc. He’s probably the driver who saw the incident and if not, RK should know the contact details who was using their car, eg if it’s registered to a business, so he can be traced. You said you’d found him on Li so you already know his employer’s details and can contact him that way.

This is why every car should have a dashcam.

Report to police and insurance then sit back, not your concern anymore.

There's a lot of presumption taking place. We don't know what type of bicycle "mods", or whether the driver indcated a turn, but at unprotected crossing pedestrians and cyclists have right of way. If the driver used his mirrors properly he would have seen the cyclist either there or approaching.

FiveShelties · 25/06/2024 12:39

@MobilityCat where does the bicycle come in?

DH is in shock (and as much as I love him he is not the most practical person). He called me from the sideline when it happened and he was speaking to that helpful guy and I told him to ask the guy for his contact details if he were willing to be a witness. DH took his name and his car reg (why? He wasn't part of the collision) and no email or mobile number.
So I don't know if he still counts as a witness (I did find him on Lindkedin...)
And we don't have any photos to prove anything

Well the police would be able to get his contact details from the car reg. So another reason to report. But as PP says, report for your own protection. I think it's not just that you have to stop, you have to stop and exchange details, So even though your DH has stopped, he hasn't given his details to the other driver, and therefore has 24 hours to report to police.

Contact the police and your insurers. Hit and run is a crime and all accidents should be reported to you own insurance. I would make no further contact with the company.

I was nearly hit by a company van driving at speed into a narrow side road that I was crossing. I informed the police - who were delighted as they already wanted "a word"with the driver over a previous incident. So yes, it is worth reporting to the police.

porridgecake · 25/06/2024 12:51

I witnessed an accident involving a commercial vehicle. I gave my details to the other party because I had dashcam footage. I emailed the footage to the other driver ( who was injured). The company denied everything but once they received the video they just capitulated.
Everyone should have a dashcam.

@MobilityCat where does the bicycle come in?

What do you mean?

ActualChips · 25/06/2024 12:55

@MobilityCat this thread is from April, and doesn't mention a bicycle.

What do you mean?

You posted about a bicycle and there is no mention of a bicycle before your post.

JohnofWessex · 25/06/2024 23:19

There is another thread somewhere that involves a collision with a bike, I suggest that someone has got confused

I was knocked off the motorway by a lorry who drove off. Spun across 5 lanes of traffic, hit a van and spun back again. I cannot fathom how me and the van driver walked away.

The police had to attend the scene as my car was a writeoff and I was badly injured.

There were 5 witnesses, plus cam footage.

The motorway cctv apparently doesn't record.

The police didn't take the cam footage at the time or for so long that when they finally turned up for it it was overwritten.

The PC said he had an idea of which co it was based on id at the scene, then later said he couldn't go to the company accusing people.

After I complained to the ombudsman it transpired that the police had been given the lorry reg as someone had followed him after he did the hit and run. The police before my complaint were shrugging their shoulders and saying no idea, it was prob my fault....which was impossible where the car had been hit.

I had then hit a van and due to police ineptitude was liable for his insurance claim.

Eventually it came to light the lorry had hit and run another car just on up the motorway from me.

The police are still NOT charging him with dangerous driving and three years later where I am still in pain from my injuries I am still waiting for the insurance to be sorted out.

So not only should you phone the police, but pester them everyday until you get the answer you need. I didn't and I very much regret it now.

I was vulnerable after the accident and let a bullying workshy policeman turn the whowl thing into a joke.
