Water bill

Hi all

Me and my partner live in a small 2 bed flat, in an old building divided into multiple flats.

We don’t have a water meter and I don’t believe one can be installed.

We recently received our new bill at £620 for the year!! We’re with Wessex Water.

1 shower each a day, use the washing machine maybe 3 times a week if that, and no dishwasher.

AIBU or does this seem high for a flat of our size? It seems basically double the average for a 2 bed flat.

It sounds a little on the high side but not wildly so, given you are not on a meter. We are light users and spend about that on metered water per year.

TipsyKoala · 10/04/2024 18:16

Yes that’s high but if you don’t have a meter you’ll pay standard rates. I believe Wessex water is also more expensive than water companies in other parts of the county. Look into getting a water meter.

GasPanic · 10/04/2024 18:35

Seems high to me. Can't remember but I seem to remember someone posting the average cost is about £170 per person per year. Or something close to that. But obviously depends on a number of factors like where you live.

I would ask for a reduction.

SpringOfContentment · 10/04/2024 18:48

If there is no meter, is doesn't matter if you have 5 second showers once a week, or a full bath twice a day. The cost will be the same. It's based on rateable value.

I'd ask for a meter, and if they say it can't be done, ask for an assessed charge. I'm not sure how it works with flats tho.

dreadisabaddog · 10/04/2024 19:17

Ours was £920. 3 bed house in south wales. One child who has 1 or 2 baths a week and two exhausted parents who try to shower every day but is sometimes every other day. Think we should get a meter

PotatoPudding · 10/04/2024 19:20

Ours is £780 a year for a 5 bed.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/04/2024 19:27

Less than £1 a day each for unlimited water to wash and drink and your sewage taken away……
it’s based on the rateable value of your property and less than I pay for a 2 bed flat, although my flat is in a disproportionately high council tax band!

Soukmyfalafel · 13/04/2024 11:25

Ours is 490 for 6 months. On a meter. I would really think about getting a meter if you are a high usage family. A tap left on/leaks is a nightmare. We are in a 2 bed flat with two kids, daily showers. People in larger properties not on a meter, use hoses for garden etc pay so much less than us.

Our son has ASD and LD and has DLA. Does anyone know if this qualifies for capped bills? He uses a lot of water as he has Incontinence. If anyone has 3 kids under 18 I think they could be capped too, so might be worth asking about that.

Soukmyfalafel · 13/04/2024 11:27

I am with Wessex water too. Forgot to add that

EnglandRivieraOrchard · 13/04/2024 11:32

I pay about 400 a year, we are a 4 person household in the south (not wessex water though). We do have a meter.

I definitely think its worth querying with your water company or asking others in the building what they pay to get a similar comparison.

Soukmyfalafel · 13/04/2024 11:39

I know it's less than £1 a day for OP, but let's face it - they are getting money for nothing in terms of sewerage and they are just dumping it in the sea! I don't sea swim anymore and if my dog swims in the sea he gets sick. I don't like paying for that privilege.

PrincessofWells · 13/04/2024 11:42

Ask for a meter, if it can't be fitted they have to reduce your bill to an average usage for two people. It will reduce your bill.

MaisyMary77 · 13/04/2024 11:45

We had a meter installed last year. Our bill has gone from over £900 a year to £450. 5 bed house, 4 adults.

teenagetantrums · 13/04/2024 11:46

We are with wessex water, 2 bedroom flat, two adults, so 2 showers a day, the occasional bath. We use the washing machine maybe 4 times week. We pay £26 a month. But we have a water meter.

Soukmyfalafel · 13/04/2024 11:51

I would ignore my posts then. It sounds like we just use up a LOT of water in our household 😂

pelotonaddiction · 13/04/2024 11:55

I'm on a meter, 2 bed flat but just me here and I pay £29pm
