To eat crisps in office

Foood · 10/04/2024 11:43

I'm currently pregnant and have terrible morning sickness.

The only thing that helps is keeping snacks in my bag; hula hoops seem to be keeping the sickness at bay.

A colleague who sits at the desk to the back of me hates the sound of chewing or crunching, and comments every time someone eats.

Am I being unreasonable that I just ignore this and carry on eating my snacks despite the glares when I turn around ?

Buy this person earplugs and crunch on. They’d be more upset if you throw up on your desk.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 10/04/2024 11:48

I would get 10, stick one on each finger and eat them extravagantly at my desk.

KimberleyClark · 10/04/2024 11:52

She might have misophonia. She should ask to be moved away from you.

GasPanic · 10/04/2024 11:52

Get some of those Walkers Max Power crinkle crisps.

Paprika are great.

I had a pack of Cheese and Onion the other day and had to crunch so hard my jaw hurt.

takealettermsjones · 10/04/2024 11:56

If there's no rule against eating at your desk in your office then unfortunately this is your colleague's issue to sort. Noise cancelling headphones for instance.

LoveSandbanks · 10/04/2024 12:00

I can’t bear hearing people crunch. There are somethings that I can’t bear to hear myself eat.

its my problem, not everybody else’s. She’s a rude bitch who needs to learn to make a cup of tea or just shut up.

dudsville · 10/04/2024 12:06

I think we are too critical about eating food outside of the home or a restaurant in this country. It shouldn't have a smell, shouldn't be heard eating, etc., shouldn't be whilst walking or on the tube/bus, at one's desk, but eating is not rude behaviour! I've only ever eaten in these contexts when I've needed to, sounds like you do too. Fwiw, one of my colleagues used to crunch her way through rice cakes during one of her pregnancies. This was almost a decade ago and I still remember that fondly.

landscapepainter · 10/04/2024 12:09

Of course it's fine to eat crisps at your desk. Jeez. It's not an unreasonable behaviour at all unless you're spitting crumbs all over her keyboard.

Your colleague is hyper sensitive and can bring in some earplugs if it bothers her that much.

FrenchandSaunders · 10/04/2024 12:11

Ignore, it's part of sharing an office and she needs to sort it out if it's a problem for her. I had a colleague like this, her head used to pop up above her screen like a meercat the minute she heard a bag rustle .... got right on my tits.

AncientQuercus · 10/04/2024 12:17

These comments show that none of you has a clue about misophonia.
It isn't just a dislike of a noise. It is a physical response to a specific sound. Your body reacts to the sound with a fight or flight reflex and floods with adrenaline; it's quite horrible.
I usually just leave the room but that isn't always possible, especially if there are several people all enjoying a snack.
If it was a visible impairment would you still call her a silly cow and try to make it worse?

Mrsjayy · 10/04/2024 12:20

I'm like them eating noises are excruciating but it's my problem not eaters, have your crisps let them moan .

Hillarious · 10/04/2024 12:20

Perhaps you could talk to each other and come to a compromise?

saraclara · 10/04/2024 12:25

I was fortunate not to work in an office environment. I used to have to leave the staffroom if someone was crunching. But of course I couldn't possibly complain about people eating their lunch in the room that was provided for them to do so.

I'd be driven mad by people eating at their desks in a shared office. I get that people don't understand how awful it is for those of us who have that reaction, but surely eating distractingly crunchy stuff in that environment is a touch rude anyway? Just as people don't appreciate colleagues eating egg sandwiches?

A compromise OP - if you're one of those people who crunch the crisp before you close your mouth, people like me would hugely appreciate it if you close your mouth first! It makes a huge difference for us.

SpaghettiWithaYeti · 10/04/2024 12:27

Is there a way to move you two apart?

Also do you manage to eat reasonably quietly? I have worked with a couple of people who ate in an astonishingly noisy way

saraclara · 10/04/2024 12:30

That! It's weird how some people can eat quietly, while others eat exactly the same thing and it reverberates around the room! The 'close mouth and then crunch' thing above is one difference between quiet and loud eaters, but doesn't account for it all.

There was one woman who caused me to leave as soon as she arrived in the staffroom with her lunch. I don't know what it was about her eating technique, but it went right through me.

Foood · 10/04/2024 12:34

I do try to moisen the crisps in my mouth before I crunch down to muffle the noise.

Just to add, she will eat pretzels and nuts at her desk, but has no tolerance for other people eating.

Oh well she can go fuck herself then!

HoHoHoliday · 10/04/2024 12:38

Eating at your desk is a bad habit to be in, and the sound of chewing and crunching is so irritating!
Don't you have a kitchen at work, or a social area, any space away from your desk? It'll only take you a couple of minutes to eat a bag of crisps, just get up from your desk and eat them elsewhere for a couple of minutes for the sake of everyone's sanity.
Your colleague may be the only one who has commented but you can be fairly sure most in the office don't want to hear eating noises from anyone else.

NewNameHello · 10/04/2024 12:39

In my office a colleague eats those hula hoop pufts with her lunch and crunches away not giving a shit, gob wide open 🙉 we just secretly laugh about it and leave the office. Its the sucking on each finger after once done and then turning their keyboard over to bang it to get the crumbs out that just give me the ick. What can you do 😂 🎧

usernother · 10/04/2024 12:39

I used to keep headphones to wear at work for that very reason. I cannot stand the sound of people eating anything. I'd suggest it to the colleague.

Hippomumma2 · 10/04/2024 12:40

Your colleague needs to get over this pronto. I eat all day at my desk - I graze during office hours !

KimberleyClark · 10/04/2024 12:42

Always surprises me when people suggest wearing headphones in the office. Last place I worked we were meant to be listening out for other people’s phones and answering them if necessary. Headphones would have been a total no no.

WaltzingWaters · 10/04/2024 12:43

So she can eat crunchy pretzels at her desk but nobody else can crunch?! Eat away and don’t give it a second thought. I had so many crisps and crackers in that first trimester to keep the nausea at bay.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 10/04/2024 12:46

Hula Hoops result in some motherfuckin noisy munching and crunching. Drives me round the twist. But Yanbu to eat them! I always have headphones that I wear to drown out munching noises. Works like a charm.

Some people are just office despots expecting everyone to do as they say. Fuck ‘em.
