To ask what you'd do with a child free day?

Well half a day really. Both kids at nursery and holiday clubs today. I have a day off. Will need to drop and pick them all up but in between I have about 5 hours of freedom. This never happens. I almost feel under pressure to do something special that I wouldn't otherwise be able to do with the kids. But equally it would be nice just to potter quietly. Ideas?

I had one recently, it was fabulous. I took the train into my nearest city, visited an art gallery I’d never been to before, then had a nice lunch. Train home and had an hour at home reading with a cup of tea. Bliss!

Whatever you do, don’t use it to catch up on housework.

Yearendjoy · 10/04/2024 08:00

I go for a long walk or run and then the gym.

Unabletomitigate · 10/04/2024 08:02

Potter! But if you can get a nice walk in, somewhere you like, not for the kids.

enoughrainnow · 10/04/2024 08:05

Don't do cleaning!
Get your nails done.
Have lunch out.
Meet a friend/relative for coffee/lunch.
Do some shopping for yourself.
Do some gardening.
Exercise/go to the gym

jeaux90 · 10/04/2024 08:05

If was me I'd walk or cycle into town, have coffee, mooch round the shops then come back and do some gardening. Any time that I have its outside. But if it's crap weather i go to the gym, have a swim and steam.

enoughrainnow · 10/04/2024 08:05

Just thought of another... go to the cinema

WithACatLikeTread · 10/04/2024 08:27

I would go for a swim or to the library and then get a coffee at a cafe. I can't wait for this to happen soon!

marlfield · 10/04/2024 08:32

For me, it would be the cinema and a pedicure. Something out of the house that you cannot do with a kid in tow.

Heaven! Enjoy!

Mairzydotes · 10/04/2024 08:47

I'd be overwhelmed

What about a pub lunch or a coffee
Get your errands done in peace

Literally how I feel! Happens so rarely that I feel obliged to do something relaxing but then get stressed out over it which sort of defeats the purpose.

Thinking I might drop the kids off and pick up a nice breakfast from somewhere (possibly McDonald's) on the way home. Then relax, read my book, have a long bath. Then head out after lunch to run a few errands in town. Might visit the library too. Hardly revolutionary but will be nice to just be on my own for a few hours.,

Coffee shop with a book, cinema, sit on the sofa and listen to music. It doesn't matter so long as it isn't chores or kid related

pontipinemum · 10/04/2024 09:00

I actually don't know what I'd do! Usually it only happens when SIL kindly takes DS because I have college or cleaning to do

That sounds lovely, don’t put too much pressure on yourself to fill the time, just enjoy the moment

zebranotzeebra · 10/04/2024 09:01

If it's only 5 hours, I wouldn't do the cinema or a gallery because I would feel under pressure to get home again in time, but that's just me, I tend to overthink these things! I'd probably go for a swim, do some yoga, have a lovely lunch with all the things kids/DP don't like to eat and then just chill at home. Agree with PP, no chores!

PlantDoctor · 10/04/2024 09:03

I've only done it (edit to add: "it" is "go out for the day"!) a couple of times as I get quite antsy, thinking I'll somehow be late to pick up (never have been in three years of preschool, but somehow being out will make me forget?? 😅)

So, I tend to get some jobs done and take the dog for a longer walk on the rare occasion I don't have work.

JustMarriedBecca · 10/04/2024 09:05

I'd lie in bed. In a dark room. Listen to a podcast. Eat toast.

HingryHuppos · 10/04/2024 09:22

I usually try to do something productive followed by a bit of a treat. I would maybe go for a run and then do a job in the house or garden. And then shower/bath and have a walk along the high street or read my book.

LtMoose · 10/04/2024 09:30

I would probably do absolutely nothing, lie very still, without having to get up to help someone, watch YouTube and eat whatever I want.

Frosty1000 · 10/04/2024 09:59

I'd do nothing but sit in silence and drink hot tea 😆😆

Fairysteps11 · 10/04/2024 10:03

Would definitely order some breakfast and a coffee in, take it upto bed or snuggle down on the sofa with cushions and duvet and watch something that's been on your list or your favourite programme/movie and read/nap. Currently at work and that sounds bliss 🥰

Just whatever it is you choose, make sure it's something that you like to do! Don't clean!

When I have free time I get my nails and feet done and enjoy a coffee in peace 🤣 I also don't get that much I'm always work my children I have 4! Soo when I do get some me time I make the most of it! 👌🏻💪🏻

ShiftySquirrel · 10/04/2024 10:51

I had 5 hours to myself yesterday, my DC are young teens and it happens surprisingly infrequently.
I spent 4 hours filling in the forms for a medical assessment for my eldest then half an hour housework...

But it was bliss to have a quiet house to concentrate and tidy house for half a day.
