What to do extremely early in Belfast?

ShalommJackie · 09/04/2024 16:13

Going to Belfast for the first time. Can check in to our hotel at 3pm. The only flights I can find get us in at 7.20 or 23.40 so obviously we'll be going for the early one!

Any suggestions as to where to go for breakfast or what to do that first day?

Could you get a paper round? Earn a bit of money and also see the sunrise over the slipway, where the Titanic was built?

Leafbuds · 09/04/2024 19:10

it takes a while to get from the airport into the city - I landed at about that time, and didn't get in until about 9 I think. I left my luggage at the hotel, and then had the day to do stuff. I had breakfast out, and then did a walking tour - I think there were some at 10, and then there are always bus tours, titanic museum (earlier tickets were less crowded), the city hall museum which was free, a long walk in the gardens that the bus tour stops at, lots of coffee stops, etc.

I did another day where I got up very early and took the train to Coleraine, and then the bus along the coast that stops at the famous sites including Giant's causeway, the rope bridge, other castles etc., but before the tour buses get there. I woudln't do that on the first morning though as it was full day very tiring trip in the end!

Get tickets for the Titanic Belfast. Get breakfast before you go.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 09/04/2024 19:14

@Leafbuds

How easy was the train and coastal bus? We are going in June and I cannot work out if it makes more sense to just book the trip from Belfast or do my own thing. I would prefer my own thing but not sure how often buses run / length of journeys) I looked up timetables but it didn't seem a quick thing.

If you are flying into the international airport it will take 45min at least to travel into the city

If flying to George best airport roughly 10 mins to city centre but depending in where your hotel is could be longer/shorter.

Very little to do here until 9am apart from a nice breakfast and a walk....everywhere is "close"

Yeah it's the George best airport we're flying into.

Thank you all! Going for a walk sounds good 🤣

Ooh did you book it all separately? This would be incredible

We had a very early arrival when we went last year! We dropped the bags at the hotel and had booked a table at Harlem for breakfast - highly recommend! Although it didn’t open until 9am so we had to have a walk round until it opened. We had a fabulous time, such a great city! Would recommend the tour of Belfast City hall - it’s free but you need to book on

Pollyannamex · 09/04/2024 19:49

If its a Friday, then St George’s market opens at 8am and has loads of food options

Or else try:

hjem
the pocket
Bakari
harlem cafe

they all open about 8am

Summertimeagain · 09/04/2024 19:55

The Ulster Museum is excellent although not open on a Monday. You could cover it, Botanic Gardens and have a walk past Queens university before 3.00pm

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 09/04/2024 20:07

Breakfast 930 onwards www.linenhall.com/visit-us/the-linen-hall-cafe/

Heaps of cafe Nero in city centre open

Aethelfled · 09/04/2024 20:08

We got to our hotel around 9am, they let us have breakfast. We left bags in the left luggage at the hotel, then went for a walk around Belfast, then to the Titanic museum which was booked for 12.30. After that we went back to the hotel and the room was ready then.

Danielle9891 · 09/04/2024 20:09

I'd get my bags (Belfast can take ages even if your the only flight in) then go into the city for breakfast. I'd also get tickets for the titanic centre, although I saw on Facebook today they've closed the titanic centre as the storm has damaged the roof, so keep an eye on it.

We went to see the ice hockey at the SSE the other week and it was great fun. It's definitely worth doing. Also the Ulster museum and W5 is worth a visit.

DappledThings · 09/04/2024 20:12

We landed really early last trip and came into George Best. We had to head straight to Primark to get DC shoes as we'd forgotten them (they were lifted from their beds at 2am and straight into car) but that wasn't open yet so we had breakfast in Tim Hortons. Then headed to Primark then onto St George's Market.

And from there up to the Ulster Museum.

Leafbuds · 09/04/2024 20:20

Yes, I booked things separately for the coastal bus etc. I went in August, so that might affect how often the buses went. I was able to see the timetables of the trains and the buses via apps - I booked the train tickets the day before, and I think I bought a 'rambler' ticket for the bus, possibly attached to the train ticket or otherwise in advance, and I could use it all day on the bus. There was a general northern ireland transport app - not that great user interface but did give me the timetables I needed for the trains and buses. I remember having an app that showed where the bus was (I think it's the Bustimes.org website) so that I didn't miss it and could plan the journey. I took the train from Belfast to Coleraine, and the bus station is right there at the train station, so very easy to change. The bus stops at the different sites, though you might tell the bus driver where you are going to make sure you don't miss it. I stopped at Giant's Causeway first to get there before the crowds, and I didn't book anything there. I then booked a ticket at Carrick-a-Rede once I knew what time I'd be finished at the causeway and which bus I was getting, and that worked fine. I then took the bus to Ballycastle and had a quick look around, but not that much to do when I was there (I was by myself) so just went for a walk, saw the sea, had fish and chips as a very late lunch, and then took the bus back, and stopped at Dun Luce castle as my last stop. Then took the train back to Belfast in the late afternoon/early evening. I didn't stop at any other places but I did look from the bus - it's a pretty journey! The coaches also stop at some of the Game of Thrones sites, but I don't watch it, and though they looked pretty, they weren't enough to make me want to do it that way. They stopped at Carrickfergus castle I think on the way, but only for a quick look from the outside, and I figured that I could always take the bus/train there for a separate visit another day if I really wanted.

It was remarkably easy. I'm not an intrepid traveller and would usually opt for something like a coach tour, but I really wanted to see Giant's causeway when it wasn't crowded, and was really pleased how well it all worked out. I took the train about 7am or maybe earlier, to line up with the first bus of the day from Coleraine. It was much cheaper than the coach journey as well. And I could choose how much time I wanted to spend at the various sties. Also the coaches aren't allowed to go to the Carrick-a-Rede bridge any more - they can go to a viewing place to see it, but can't go into the site. So you'd have to do that on the bus or hire a car. A car would have been fine, but I was on my own and didn't want to hire and drive in a strange place, and concentrate on the road and miss the scenery! It's quite a walk at the rope bridge, so you need to allow a fair bit of time, and I spent a couple of hours or more at Giant's Causeway too, doing the longer walk. So it took me much of the day in the end, but I was really glad I did it on my own rather than the tour.

You can also use an app to buy tickets for the bus from the airport into the city, though I was at the international airport - maybe that's not such an issue at the other airport. But at the international one ,there would have been long queues at the bus itself, but already having a ticket made it faster. Maybe not needed at 7am though!

Carelesswispalover · 09/04/2024 20:26

Go to bright's or Maggie May's for a proper Ulster fry, you won't be there that early if it's a weekday cos traffic is usually gridlocked at that time of the morning 🤣

KiwiLondoner · 09/04/2024 20:43

I love Belfast! Walk around the city and get breakfast, then take a special Black Cab tour of the city - they have drivers that talk of the troubles and really educate on it. It was so moving. Thoroughly recommend!

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 09/04/2024 21:00

@Leafbuds thanks so much. Realised I said I'm going June but it's August! Probably thinking of my weekend in Liverpool. That sounds fairly easy - yes one of the main factors in thinking about doing the train / bus combo is the ability to go on the rope bridge.

Plus my daughters prefer not to be bound by the timetables of a group. Im also not fussed about game of thrones so wouldn't bother stopping for that.

Hopingtobe4 · 09/04/2024 21:18

Carrick a reid rope bridge is not for the faint hearted lol. Once was enough for me,anyone afraid of heights remember it's the only way back too !

I'd grab a breakfast, let the hotel know you are in town so can leave bags etc and go explore as pp have suggested the titanic visitor centre,w5,ulster museum etc

HelloVeritas · 09/04/2024 21:33

Head to Maggie Mays for a slap up breakfast then a stroll around Botanic Garden.

Allfleshisgrass · 09/04/2024 21:50

We recently landed early in Belfast on a Saturday, although at the International airport. We hired a car and got into the city for about 8.30am. Had a quick wander round then to St. George’s market for breakfast (the doors were open before 9am). Did a bit of shopping then out to Stormont for a walk and picnic before checking into the hotel at 3pm. It certainly didn’t feel like we were killing time.

We hired a car as it was cheaper to do this than pay for buses to/from the airport and pay for coach trips to Carrick A Rede and the Giants Causeway - plus we wanted to avoid the crowds. We also visited Derry. It might be worth getting a National Trust membership if there’s a few of you.
The Ulster Museum and Botanic gardens are worth a walk out and you see the university. As is the Titanic museum. It’s a well worn path!

SaulGoodmanIsTaken · 09/04/2024 21:58

we went to the National for breakfast near the Big fish sculpture and loved it - disclaimer, we were visiting from Liverpool so not local knowledge. Have a great time in Liverpool too!

Have an Ulster fry at Maggie May's, walk round the Botanic gardens and then go to the Ulster museum at 10am.

IFHTTBIC · 10/04/2024 07:44

What day are you arriving? If it's a Sunday you won't find much open before 10.30 although St George's Market opens at 10 and is a great place to visit, plenty of food options as well. By the time you're finished the hop on hop off buses will be running and I'd really recommend them if it's your first visit. Definitely head up to the Glens of Antrim or Bushmills/ The Causeway if you have time, the first does a great whiskey tour and don't be fooled into thinking you actually have to pay to see the stones of the Causeway unless you want the visitor experience, you should still be able to walk around and get to the causeway that way.

Do make sure you wear layers and take good rain protection though 😀

It's a great city to visit, and some smashing suggestions so far, enjoy!
