How much would you expect to pay a gardener for day’s work?

We are in the South. Medium/large back garden and a decent sized front garden that is messy but not a death trap.

2 guys will be coming next week to do as much as they can in a day. Includes removal.

What would you expect to pay?

Absolute minimum of £100 each.

bridgetreilly · 09/04/2024 12:18

£200/person per day, minimum.

Goneforaride · 09/04/2024 12:18

I pay our guy £15.00 an hour. So two guys, full day (8 hours work x 2), assume they are providing appropriate equipment, removal and disposal of rubbish, I'd say around £300.00 for the day.

Scampuss · 09/04/2024 12:19

At least £20ph for each gardener, plus whatever it costs to dispose of waste (which is always a lot more than you expect!).

Blackcats7 · 09/04/2024 12:20

£300-350 for the two of them including removal

RoomOfRequirement · 09/04/2024 12:20

Minimum wage is too low if you're talking an actual gardener and not a random handyman.

I'd expect to pay at least £200 each in the south but that may be too little.

PcosSOS · 09/04/2024 12:20

It depends entirely on what they are doing. Tree reduction/removal, grass cuts, maintenance, overhaul - theres a lot of variables. I would say for general maintenance in south you're looking at £25 per hour for a qualified gardener with proper insurance, tools, van etc. Some will charge less but won't have insurance etc. For tree work or soft landscaping it'll be more.

Medschoolmum · 09/04/2024 12:21

£20ph is typical around here (Midlands). I'm guessing it might be a bit higher down South?

Wel · 09/04/2024 12:22

They will be mostly cutting the grass and weeding.

OP posts:
mimblewimble · 09/04/2024 12:22

£20-£25 per hour each.

Dancingontheedge · 09/04/2024 12:24

Round here, including removal of garden waste, it’s around £25 ph per person.
I’m in Sussex.
If you’re not happy, get a few written quotes from several companies.

Wel · 09/04/2024 12:25

So I’ve agreed to £500.

They were booked very last minute as other gardener cancelled. And we need the garden done for estate agents to photograph.

Their reviews are very favourable.

I have large back garden.. medium front.
Gardener mows every two weeks.. puts it in my garden recycle bin.. takes an hour l pay him £30.
If he cuts bushes it's an extra £10.
West Yorkshire.
( oh and a cup of tea and biscuits if I'm in).

makeanddo · 09/04/2024 12:26

If you have time and have a lot to do prioritise what needs doing and try and do some yourself so they can just take it away eg chopping back trees. A few years ago I had a couple of booked and they were so slow, I could have done what they did by myself!

ZipZapZoom · 09/04/2024 12:26

Approximately 20ph so for two guys doing a standard day of roughly 8 hours I'd expect to pay them about £350.

Wel · 09/04/2024 12:27

They are proper gardeners not handymen. It will have to do given our situation.

Just so much money has been going out in preparation for listing - carpet cleaner, window cleaner, oven guy. In addition to taking a day off to declutter and paint.

Making me very nervous. Have to accept that it’s part of moving.

If you're listing the property then I wouldn't be chucking lots of money at the house unless it was absolutely essential work. Spending £500 on the garden is unlikely to make you any more money when selling the property unless the garden is an absolute state in which case 1 days work or unlikely to be enough to get it in order.

WillJeSuis · 09/04/2024 12:29

Our gardener charges £140 for a day's work which I think is low compared to other quotes but he sets his own prices. We usually give him a tip, lots of coffee breaks, we might give him a hand here and and there, and at the end of the day he can help himself to anything that he has removed from our garden and that can be of use to him e.g. gravel, paving slabs, various plants. He still comes back so I think he's happy with that.

Needanewname42 · 09/04/2024 12:56

I'd think they'd be charging £20-25 ph each so 8h day is £320-£400 and that doesn't include taking stuff away.

Actually are you paying VAT on it too then that's easy your £500.

Elixabeth · 09/04/2024 13:12

My partner charges £25 per hour, double that as you have 2 of them, and add the removal costs £500 sounds right

mumto2teenagers · 09/04/2024 13:13

£200 per gardener per day

Shinyandnew1 · 09/04/2024 13:19

I have never spent money on people coming in to do any of these things before moving. I would mow the lawn, clean and tidy and maybe a lick of paint but that’s about it. I haven’t ever paid a decorator, gardener or oven cleaner in though, I just do it myself (probably very badly!). I never had any spare money though, so had no choice!

taxguru · 09/04/2024 13:50

I think anywhere between £300-£500 is fair really. Especially if they're bringing their own tools and taking away all of the rubbish. Top end of that if they're VAT registered, so will have to incorporate the 20% VAT to charge. (If they're charging that kind of money for two of them and they're doing it on a full time basis, they'll easily be earning enough to have to be VAT registered and charge VAT!).

You can't compare to a jobbing gardener/handyman kind of person who'd probably not have a van, use your tools, leave lawn cuttings and hedge trimmings in your green wheelie bin, etc. Proper garden clearance of a neglected mess needs power tools and a van/skip to remove the rubbish.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 09/04/2024 14:02

If costs are an issue why not clean the oven and windows yourself( do the upstairs outsides leaning out from inside rather than up a long ladder). You do not need to paint anything. Buyers will no doubt change your decorating scheme. People don't care about that stuff when buying. Can you just put the mower over the lawns and weed patios etc yourself?
I've never bought a house that didn't need painting and cleaning, never put me off. Son just bought a house which was really dirty and needs decorating, no problem, it's the basic structure and layout that are the important things. Full survey brought up no issues.
So don't waste your money if you'd rather not spend it on things you can do yourself.

CagneyAndLazy · 09/04/2024 15:08

our gardener charges £350 per day in Yorkshire when it requires 2 people - 1st hedge trim of the year, etc., but the trimmings go elsewhere on our land so need for disposal.

Then more like £200 per day for a 'normal' day when needed.

For those saying less than £150, bear in mind the gardener is trying to run his business as well as pay himself. He has a vehicle, equipment, insurance, etc. to cover, as well as disposing of waste.
