That's all. Rescued a dozen ladies this weekend, ex-free range chicken farm hens. The photo shows the rest. Vile trade.

Isn’t organic about tne use of pesticides/chemicals rather than welfare/living conditions?

In the case of chickens, it's both. Organic is better.

Apparently Happy Eggs, which I usually buy, does not have happy chickens. But neither do all the other suppliers available to me in London Zone 3, without a car.

Happy Eggs is atrocious.

I'm quite sure in London Zone 3 you can find some supermarket / independent butchers / grocers etc which has one decent egg supplier.

Thanks, that’s really interesting!

It’s very rare I buy eggs as family keep a lot of EXTREMELY free range hens but I will definitely be buying organic from now on when I do Smile

bakewellbride · 09/04/2024 10:05

@Lentilweaver no one needs eggs for protein. I am a vegan and have plenty of protein, eggs are not essential.

bakewellbride · 09/04/2024 10:07

Well done on rescuing the chickens op. And for raising awareness of their past life on this thread. You've done a great thing.

Because they're not meant to lay an egg daily. They've been bred that way and their bodies cannot cope. Laying so many eggs depletes the calcium from their bones which is why so many end up with broken legs. It doesn't matter how lovely the farm is, these poor animals are being exploited.

I used to keep chickens, I had 4, and they all laid eggs every single day. The stopped laying when the temperature dropped in the winter and then started again once they’d got used to it. If they’re short on calcium the shells of the eggs are soft (never had that issue) and I’ve never known any chickens “in the backyard) with a broken leg. Despite laying daily they lived to a ridiculous old age.

some breeds DO lay daily, quite happily

CommentNow · 09/04/2024 10:11

Tbf as shit as it is for those birds, anyone consuming any product with eggs is supporting exploitation of chickens.

Think about it.... There is no way the "egg" in manufactured products like ready made cakes etc are even free range.

The point I'm making is that of you care enough about chickens to only eat free range under the belief that you are supporting higher welfare standards, unless you avoid any ready made product with "egg" then you are likely indirectly supporting much much lower welfare standards.

It's just a marketing scam to con people into thinking they're not participating in animal cruelty. I can also assure you the pigs killed to make sausages for the brand "the jolly hog" weren't very happy either. The laughing cow probably wasn't laughing when her baby was taken from her, she was exploited for her milk and then slaughtered when her milk dried up.

Yes. But I like them and don't want to give them up. Being a veggie is hard enough on my social life! Neither am I going to cart eggs back on the Tube or bus from independent butchers.

I have found Rymers Farm Eggs on Tesco. They will have to do, I guess.

Jennalong · 09/04/2024 10:14

I know a lady who has a small holding.
She takes chickens like this from a local farmer who advertises his eggs as free range.

Churchview · 09/04/2024 10:14

Thank you for posting this. It's really prompted me to look into this and also find a source of eggs from hens who lead a good life.

I hope you and your girls have a great time together.

Lentilweaver · 09/04/2024 10:15

@Illpickthatup No. But everyone does the best they can, I suppose.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 09/04/2024 10:16

I was never under the illusion that barn or even free range was ideal, just a little better than caged. TBH not sure organic eggs are better either, because that's not about conditions and more about the food they eat surely?
We do live rurally so often can purchase/are given properly free range eggs, but not everyone can do this. Also with COL crisis some folk are having to move down a level in terms of what they can afford.

twohooverwannabe · 09/04/2024 10:17

It’s worth a post on Fb to see if anyone local keeps their own hens that you could buy eggs from.

I live in a small town but there’s got to be half a dozen places within a 10/15 minute drive I could buy fresh eggs.

RoseAndRose · 09/04/2024 10:17

Actual eggs are just the tip of the iceberg.

Processed food containing eggs is a much larger issue, so cutting that out (or sharply reducing it) would be a step with even greater impact.

What on earth? Lots of people take the bus to do their shopping and manage to get the bus back.

It's hardly the trials of Heracles.

@Illpickthatup No. But everyone does the best they can, I suppose.

If you're eating eggs when you don't need to then you're not really doing the best you can. You're putting your own pleasure ahead of the life of an animal. Some people don't feel bad about that but it doesn't make it any less true.

Depends where you live, I guess. Where I am the buses are very crowded. Definitely not the trials of Heracles, but as I said, more than I am prepared to do.

COL isn't an excuse to treat animals in that way when we are so spoilt for food options that aren't eggs (this also applies to cheap meat too).

Sometimes I can't afford decent meat. I just eat veggie or vegan that week.

People don't 'need' a lot of things, that doesn't mean they don't choose to have them.
I have been a meat eater, a vegetarian (for long periods of time) and a vegan (for shorter periods). Due to what I enjoy, what my digestive system can cope with (I don't have allergies but many foods do aggravate my stomach, especially in certain combinations), and affordability, a diet that contains small amounts of meat works best for me. I love lots of veggies too, and often have vegetable options when my DH/DS have a meat option.

With all due respect, statements like that are coming from a privileged position.
I buy the best quality I can afford, but I am not naive enough to think I can judge those who don't.

I eat meat and eggs and products containing milk.
I know what happens to the animals in order to produce the meat and eggs and milk, and have still chosen to eat it. That is my choice. Others choose to eat plant based/vegan diets, and that is also their choice. Each to their own. Trying to 'guilt trip' is such an overused tactic by many vegans (do they really think people think meat just lands from the sky or something?).
