There's Pedants' Corner on MN where I go to be really annoyed about things like this.

TBF in my Saaf Laandon whine, I was taught 'ecsetra' so there is some logic.

I thought it was "ecsetra" for years. Not from South London, but not a million miles away.
I didn't understand why everyone else spelled (spelt?) It wrong.
Then at some point I realised!
I was 10 or 11 at the time.

Theothername · 09/04/2024 10:57

I always assume people who are sticklers for grammar and spelling haven’t studied many medieval texts. Anyway the age of pedantry has passed- we’re in the middle of a language revolution with SM. It’s an incredibly exciting era and well worth delving into the studies on this topic

On SM platforms like MN, formal language is inappropriate and what has developed is a style of writing that minics the rhythms of spoken language. So on that basis ect sounds closer to et cetera because of the silent t (actually bugs me more when it’s mid pronounced as eT cetera).

I think you can safely assume not many people have studied medieval texts!

If you're invested in this, join me on the BOUGHT BROUGHT thread I'm about to create.

Please don't.
That's also done on a weekly basis.

GentleButter · 08/04/2024 21:29

Oh God, I know.
I literally hate it.
Why oh why oh why do people put ect.?
It doesn't even make sense!
It's ET CETERA
So WHY would it be ect???
Oh God it makes my brain hurt just thinking about it!!!!
And another thing, no-one bothers to put a full stop af the end either, whether they spell if the wrong way or the right way!

Is this supposed to be ironic?

DoubleOuch · 09/04/2024 15:03

So I thought I'd try driving on the right hand side of the road today 'cos, like, who gives a shit, and we're in a changing world, and some dickhead drove straight into me! I told him that things were changing and he was living in the past but he seemed really mad. Wanker.

What a ridiculous comparison.

Jayne35 · 09/04/2024 15:24

I have never (in my 30+ years working in admin jobs) seen someone write ect.

clary · 09/04/2024 15:27

tbf I started my writing career in the 1980s and our style then was no full point. Do you put one after St as in St James’s Park?

I hate ect too but also hate etc. It nearly always means “actually there is nothing else to add or I would add it”.

Shithole101 · 09/04/2024 15:34

Etc ect I forgot as soon as I scrolled a bit.

Blueuggboots · 09/04/2024 16:12

@Jayne35, lucky you!

I don't care if it there is some kind of evolution going on because of SM.

It's ETC. not ECT.

I will choose this as my hill to die on.

I will also continue to add 2 spaces after a full stop when typing. Smile

nooooooooooo @Blueuggboots stop that now! Unless you are using an actual manual typewriter in which case carry on.

DrSpartacular · 09/04/2024 18:05

But why do you keep capitalising the letters @Blueuggboots ?

It is never ETC. It is always etc.

Blueuggboots · 09/04/2024 18:07

@DrSpartacular

Just for emphasis, nothing more. I would write/type it as etc.
