Name changed because this is very outing!
Son had an accident over Easter and now has a wire across his teeth holding them in place. It’ll stay for the next 5 weeks at least. The problem is- the glue will not stick. Had the operation on Monday, glue came off on Thursday. Had it re-stuck on Friday, it came off on Sunday. Had it re- done again today and it’s already come off tonight. The wire is literally sticking out the side of his mouth. I can’t do another five weeks of this. It’s not sticking at all. The hospital have discharged us so they won’t let us back. The dentists have fixed it already once and they spent ages removing all the old glue, putting a drying stuff on it so it was ready and then re gluing it. The worst part is, he’s denying it, but I’m pretty sure he’s fiddling with it with his tongue. He’s ASD and usually a big chewer, so think this has become a new oral fixation? I don’t know what we can do? Anyone an expert and can offer any suggestions on how to get the thing to stay on his teeth? The dentists are closed tonight so it’s another day off school and work trying to get it fixed tomorrow

If it helps, we were given these nhs emergency contact details for orthodontic emergencies, i think the phone line is open until 10pm weekdays or you could send an email with a photo of the issue [email protected], or 03000337790. Good luck

This is not a brace , this is to stabilise the teeth whilst they are healing .

Unfortunately wires will not stay on if a lot of pressure is put on them and if he is a chewer and/or uses chewies or similar it will definitely not stay on . The other possibility , if he will tolerate it , is a pull down retainer ie a thin plastic mouth guard that fits over his teeth , but he must not take it in and out or chew on it and it will take a couple of days to make it.

I suspect it is going to be very difficult to get anything to stay but it is best discussing with your dentist and letting them know about the chewing. I think you will have to be resigned to seeing a lot of your dentist in the next few weeks.

The splint won't survive him fiddling with it. As @Lollygaggle says, ask your dentist if they can make a suckdown splint but he will have to not fiddle with it.
