Pissed about missed childcare funding

Am very lucky to have DH, DS 5 and DS 2. DH has serious health condition which means we try to appreciate the time we have now and make the most of our money, so please be kind. Also appreciating this issue is due to my own stupidity, but wanting to share anyway, in case there’s anyone else in the same situation.

I returned from my second maternity last January, and got a small pay rise which took my salary to just over £100k. At the next Gov Gavteway review, I didn’t apply for childcare support as had no idea about the ability to pay more into pension to keep salary below £100k. I also realise know that I would have been eligible based on tax year, as I hadn’t earned over £100k and wouldn’t do until this year.

Ive now realised what an idiot I’ve been, and have increased my pension contributions to enable me to be under the £100k, but stupidly put a request into Gov last month, despite taxable earnings showing as £103k on payslip. I’m now going to need to wait 3 months to apply again, missing both the 30 hr and 15 hrs for my 2 year old 😞

AIBU to be annoyed at the whole situation, that required me be more aware of the tax breaks I should be exploring to save my free childcare?! I’m so bloody angry at myself for missing these obvious savings, which would have made a huge difference to our finances this last year.

DH has a budget that he bangs on about, but if he’d been more clued in then he couldn’t have pointed out how easily we could have been more tax efficient.

AIBU to just feel pissed off at myself, and the whole situation (and a little at DH for not spotting this even if I hadn’t)? Anyone else able to share where they’ve done something similar so I feel less alone on this?

thanks!

That is frustrating. Similarly I only knew that child benefit thresholds were salary less pension as a friend told me thankfully in advance. Unless you read the detail then all your hear is if your salary is over X you don't get this benefit

Can you try and look at it as you had a salary of over 100K so had the cash to spend for that quarter (albeit taxed). Put a positive spin on it.

Yes that’s probably the best approach isn’t it, very much a no point in crying over spilt milk situ

That's a great salary so hopefully you won't need the free childcare as much as those on lower salaries.
