Eviction looming! Try for council house or will council say we have to find a private rental again?

Landlord wants to sell property. This is the 2nd property in two years we’re having to leave due to this.

I am a carer to 2 disabled DC. We also have a young adult DC in a part time job (zero hours contract). DH has a reasonably well paid job but we can’t pass affordability checks for 3 beds in our area. Lowest rent is £1850 (not even in London)for a tiny terrace with no parking but we have a DC with a disabled badge so need parking. We only got this current property after taking out a loan to pay 6 months rent in advance! Still have some to pay off. Rents have increased around £200 a month since we were looking last year!

We are eligible for a 4 bed property which is desperately needed due DCs disabilities, but they start at £2.2k month so no chance.

I really don’t want to go to the council but landlord has started court possession as section 21 has run out. Worried about being put in B&B as one DC needs meds kept in fridge and has a strict diet so I need a kitchen to cook in!

Also absolutely sick of moving with disabled DC being affected by upheaval.

I have heard that councils are telling people they have to stay in private rent but how are we going to pay that if we can’t afford it?

So stressed. Any advice?

Maybe it's time to get away from London. Sheesh the rent amount you mentioned is 5 months rent for our 4 bed house in wonderful countryside and friendly community and beaches a 5 minute drive away

Yes go to the council. They might say no, but you have got to ask.

She clearly says she’s not even in London

If you’re going to ‘sheeesh’ at someone in a difficult position, at least read their post 🙄

Not a helpful response, the OP has serious housing issues, it isn't Escape to the Country!

Talk to the housing dept at the council and find out what they can or cannot do to help. The website for Shelter has info for you too and they give sound advice.

Best to check with your council, mine is minimum 5 years on "priority" so that's living in temp for at least 5 years but everywhere is different so best to check where you live..

Rainyspringflowers · 08/04/2024 02:04

And @Ladyj84 £1850 being five months rent for a four bedroom house? £370 a month?

Where do you live, 1994?

PaminaMozart · 08/04/2024 02:04

Make a CAB appointment and call Shelter

calligraphee · 08/04/2024 02:07

I agree speak to Shelter and the council's housing team.

The issue is if you "make yourself' homeless the council has less duty to house you, but if you wait for eviction you have less control over what happens and where you get housed.

I'm sorry you have this stress Flowers
