I shop in Tesco's/Morrisons supermarkets. My workmates keep going on and said shop at lidl/aldi as it is so much cheaper. There is just me and my young son, so today I got our dinner from there (lidl). I bought Rump steak, oven chips and beans (we usually have a roast on Sunday and a fry up on monday) but fancyed a change. the rump was about 10 pounds, chips 2.00 and beans about 50p (ish) ..the steak was so so tough, chips all different sizes so some were more done than the others, beans with watery thin sauce. Can anyone really eat this stuff! I really need to cut down on our shopping costs but this was terrible! Have you any tips for shopping for nice food cheaperly?

I’m not the one telling people to “run along” and enjoy their Lidl dinner. Your posts are fucking embarrassing I’m cringing even more 😂😂😂

Seems like you have some rage issues. You’re reading all that from my posts? Seriously you’re that wound up because of a snarky response i’ve written to someone outraged because i think Lidl is disgusting? First of all anyone outraged because someone hates a particular retailer is bizarre. How does my personal supermarket choice impact them? Did anyone tell them they can’t. And you are cringing about my response? And ranting and swearing at me? Your responses to me make me wonder about your mental health tbh. Now please go take your rage out on someone else.

Hate away however don’t say a supermarket is “disgusting”. You may hate it but that doesn’t make it disgusting.

Why is it wrong to say it is disgusting? I hate it because it is disgusting. They promote themselves and profit from low prices but they're known to have issues with their suppliers mistreating animals, have higher residual of pesticides (some of which were referred to in the news yesterday as 'forever chemicals'. They're targeting people who need to save money with food that is less healthy. That's disgusting. The taste of some of their brand food is disgusting. That they profit off of copying established brands is disgusting. I've tried it. I've researched a lot about their sources and practices and my opinion is that Lidl is disgusting. I don't think Lidl does much good but rips people off by fooling them into thinking they're better off. If you disagree. That's fine. If you think their practices are fine, than that it is up to you.

Branded products are the same where ever they are sold and most of their branded products will be sold in Waitrose, Sainsbury etc. The same type of foods are promoted across the board in every supermarket as that is what makes money, there is a shed load less marketing in their stores than others and they don’t have ridiculous loyalty schemes, they are a well respected supermarket in Germany, you clearly haven’t tasted all their own brand food as that is impossible and others disagree with you….

Cheap champagne at Christmas (fans self and clutches at the pearls) OMG the horror!

although Aldi do a fabulous Chrem for £8:99 much better than some champagne I’ve had.

Some people on limited budgets don’t have the option to pop into M&S - doesn’t make them lesser beings or shit ‘chefs’ your post are dripping in an odd sort of superiority born or privilege - quite unattractive - wealth whispers

Just an example of how people can make up some pretty interesting judgements and find offense when they don't know someone at all. But now I understand clearly that on Mumsnet one must consider anything that might make someone think they're superior. But let me tell you, two years ago there was a newspaper article written about me and the horrible world I grew up in and how I'm lucky to have survived. I have no real family. That's just the hand I was dealt. But along the way I learned that there is something valuable to be said for learning to spend and get higher value than more and lower quality. That goes for a lot of things. And as for character - I am on a budget. And as I always have, as long as I have enough food, I always give food to others and I teach my child the same. He's 7 and he's used to buying an extra to give to a homeless person or stopping to read the 'needed list' to know what to buy for the food pantry volunteers outside Sainsbury's. Or asking the homeless person if they need a drink. I've stayed up late many times to give food to someone on Olio. So go ahead and be judgemental. If that's why people are attacking me for my views of Lidl well then I understand they're just being keyboard warriors thinking that I must've been born privileged which couldn't be further from the truth. I have different views. That's it.

@kitsuneghost it sure what you mean. When I first went to Aldi 2008 I couldn’t get everything but now I can. What is it you think you can’t get?

Edited

Mine doesn’t sell yeo valley plain yoghurt, red onion and chive bagels, a grated four cheese blend or HP fruity sauce.

It’s not a chore to call in the Asda I drive past to get to Aldi on the way home for these items.

I never understand when people say ALDIs veg doesn’t last. We went away for a week. I didn’t get chance to sort out the fridge before we went. The following items purchased from Aldi at least 2 weeks previously were fine when we returned:
romaine lettuce
carrots
celery
radish
mini peppers and normal peppers
broccoli
grapes
sweetheart cabbage

Granted the tomatoes were past their best and the cucumber was rather fuzzy.

I made a small chilli this week for my lunches, which is lovely.
*Half a pack of 5% beef mince (500g pack, half used, half in the freezer)
*diced white onion
*diced red pepper
*Aldi chilli seasoning packet
*tin chopped tomatoes
*tin taco beans in tomato sauce
*1 beef stock cube - could probably do without
*1 tsp of chilli powder - because i like it hot - but I’d leave this out if cooking for my kids

I used my insta pot, browned the veg, then the added the mince to brown. Added oxo & seasoning sachet, chilli powder and stirred, then the tomatoes and beans and put it on to pressure cook for 15 minutes.

I have a microwave rice cooker, before I started I put 130g easy cook rice in, with 375g-400g (weighed on the same scales) of boiling water, 10 minutes in the microwave on full power, and leave to stand until the chilli is ready - easy dinner in less than half an hour, which is easy to double and freeze half for another day.

I used to do this in my normal slow cooker, I’d just bing it all in and cook for high for about 4 hours.

Our Aldi only does the mini fillets in 300g or 600g, I wish we got the 500g size as it would suit us better.

greengreyblue · 10/04/2024 16:52

Oh it might be 600 actually. A big pack anyway.

I sense you're looking for an excuse to bash? LOL go find me a top cook that wants to use crap ingredients.

Oh my.. wait... on Trustpilot over 4500 reviewers have given an average score of 1.8% with 69% giving them 1/5.
💩

Anyone can turn out reasonable food with superb ingredients. It takes skill to produce good food with ingredients that are otherwise.

Rachel757677 · 11/04/2024 03:18

It is great that poor people and students have somewhere to shop. Both Aldi and Lidl provide a service for certain types. Good luck to them.

greengreyblue · 11/04/2024 07:17

@Rachel757677 interesting that those poor people and students park their very smart cars in my Aldi car park.

Franticbutterfly · 11/04/2024 13:42

I can't eat Aldi sausages so I know what you mean. 🤮

Misthios · 11/04/2024 13:45

Can anyone really eat this stuff!

Obviously not. Everyone who shops at Aldi and Lidl is throwing all their shopping in the bn and going to Waitrose to replace it all.

Some things in Aldi or Lidl are great, some things are average, some things are not great at all. You know, just like in Sainsbury's or Tesco, or any other shop.

Franticbutterfly · 11/04/2024 13:42

I can't eat Aldi sausages so I know what you mean. 🤮

Why? The specially selected are 90% pork Confused
They're better quality than Richmond or any value brand

Franticbutterfly · 11/04/2024 16:13

@peloton2024 When I had them they were grainy.

Motheranddaughter · 11/04/2024 17:32

I don’t get the Aldi /Lidl thing either
Have gone in a few times but didn’t like it
Maybe if you have time to go round lots of supermarkets but I don’t
For me it’s Tesco for main shop,(usually online )meat from butcher treats from Waitrose
Job done

Hankunamatata · 11/04/2024 17:36

We make out own version of split pots. Frozen cherries and natural yogurt. Defrost some cherries either in microwave or overnight and stock yogurt on them - it's just like split pot but way cheaper qnd less plastic

Caroparo52 · 11/04/2024 17:40

You bought the wrong food. Lidl Aberdeen Angus 30 day aged ribeye steak £5.59. Make own chips. Heinz original. Love Lidl. Fresh veg. Great meat and fish. Great bakery. And cheap. Job done

Londonrach1 · 11/04/2024 17:41

Depends how you cook the meat so think that on you. I've found lidl better quality than Aldi. Tesco and marks and Spencer can be cheaper than lidl, Aldi sometimes. I shop a lidl/tesco mix. I can't afford asda and sainsburys. It's Abit picking and choosing the best from each....lidl extra strong bin bags are amazing...won't go anywhere else...butter is good too and great yogurts....

Nannyfannybanny · 11/04/2024 17:43

I don't eat meat, but DH and DD do,we shop in Lidl having done for over 30 years. He picks the steaks, maybe once a week, treat,he likes fillet ,her rump, last week, got her Rump steaks for £9.99 . He does his 3 minutes each side. She lives with her partner, both never had a chewy or tough one.
