not to agree to £1500 dental surgery for cat

I am not convinced she even needs it. She seems perfectly happy, eating normally, playing etc. There is a risk with the anaesthetic, which is one consideration. She is not insured for dental work, and I would have to borrow, which is another consideration. She is 17 which is another consideration. I don't trust the vet, is another consideration..... He thinks she needs a tooth removed. But he also agrees she isn't in pain. And that health testing ( which is what some of this price is) might show she is not suitable for aesthetic anyway. He wants me to commit this money, have all the tests done to see if she is fir for surgery, then have the surgery, and I'm thinking, well, what happens if we just don't?

Yanbu, my dad is a dentist and their vet tried to Bellshill them in to unnecessary treatment - my dad said that his explanation was sheer crap - some vets (not all) are totally money grabbing charlatans- they give good vets a bad name!

I'm assuming you mean bullshit - but randomly we drove past Bellshill today on the way to our holiday destination lol 😂... I thought Bell Shill - that's a funny name ... til I re-read it as Bells Hill 🤔🤣

If your cat is eating fine I wouldn't do it given the age of the cat

CormorantStrikesBack · 07/04/2024 18:54

No way at that age, the risk to her from the anaesthetic can’t be good. Obviously if she needed surgery for something life threatening or causing her pain you’d take the risk. But otherwise no.

And definitely a second opinion. And if you don’t trust your vet find a new one. The relationship with my last one broke down as they were forever recommending stuff I didn’t feel necessary (inc dentals for my dog). My previous dog seemed to have annual dentals with them and died having a routine dental at 7yo. So when they started recommending dentals with current dog I moved vet. 4 years on and my new vet says her teeth are fine and no dentals needed.
