Chronic cough from gerd is never going away

I have a hiatal hernia diagnosed in 2018 after I went to the doctor for vomiting randomly.

Consultant said it was fine, don't worry, lots of people have it, just need to take medication if it gets worse.

Fast forward - this explains my coughing after exercise (was told it was exercise induced asthma), vomiting after eating or randomly, being short of breath and constantly 'sighing' (co workers complained, I didn't even know I was doing it). Indigestion - spicy food etc.

Im of a normal weight (size 10) and don't smoke or drink.

I was pregnant and it got worse - coughing. Nothing eased it long term.

Baby was born and cough went - who knows why!

However now it's back. I don't know if this correlated with weight training I did a month ago.

I'm currently in bed with a cold and coughing so hard from the stomach acid :(

Anti acids are apparently bad as they reduce the stomach acid etc. I just wish it went naturally.

Aibu in thinking this is now my life? Chronic cough

I had this until the doctor prescribed esomeprazole. Works brilliantly for me, I've been on it for about 5 years now. Are you taking anything?

Coming from an MD
No this is not your life forever

It stopped after delivering since your abd pressure majorly decreased
Therefore less gerd and less cough

I truly encourage you to try doing a major dietary change

No essentially cutting off all that you love but either visiting a nutritionist or understanding very well how some foods react together and how some elements worsen your GeRd no matter how little they are in your foods (for some people garlic for example or caffeine)

The one that starts with an O. It made me anemic so I was told to stop. These medications do alot of harm though

@Voicefrog currently practicing in Saudi Arabia

Usually when a patient reaches this stage we opt for a diagnostic upper endoscopy (even if they had one a year before) +taking samples for histopathology

A complaint is a complaint it cannot be ignored

They did it a few years ago. Will they just find a sliding HH again?

They will find the HH yes but taking in consideration you having GeRD for a long time is a relevant risk for developing something called Barrett's esophagus
Therefore a FU upper GI endoscopy wITH samples is the best step AFTER trying a long term full dose PPI (for a around one month)

If symptoms don't improve
Thats usually the second step

To rule out any other causes for your symptoms

But remember
Every place works by its own rules and regulations

Can be food intolerance
