To think they are taking the piss

The company I work for has just been taken over by an American company. They have also bought another company based in the UK and we will be merging with them in the coming months and as a result there will be redundancies. We'll know the new structure by mid-late May hopefully and consultations will start from then.

The communication has been terrible and they've kept us in the dark throughout the whole process, but that's a different story. They just keep telling us that it's nothing personal, just business 🙄

My issue is that a pay rise for myself and others in the team was approved back in January by the previous HR director. This was suppose to start from April when the living wage increased (we only earn slightly over min wage, an extra £500-£600 a year).

We never received confirmation of this in writing. My manager just told me over the phone that my salary would be increasing to x amount, however a generic email was sent out last week explaining that only people earning min wage would see an increase for now and that the new HR director won't honour prior agreements. Pissed off to say the least and my manager didn't even tell us. I had to call him and ask if the email applied to us. He said he will check and let me know but that's probably the case.

What’s frustrating is that someone from our team is leaving in the next 2 weeks and we will be expected to pick up her work as we’re not allowed to recruit until the new structures in place, so our workload is increasing but our salary isn’t. I know there isn’t anything I can do and it’s our fault for not getting anything in writing. Makes me think they knew all along that this would happen.

Think I just need a moan!

use this anger to kick start your job search. It sounds shitty 💐

American companies are renowned for playing hard ball and being ' hire and fire ' type organizations. My sil worked for one once in the UK and it was tough.
I agree with the poster below that looking for a new job might be a good idea , if they are already like this it might not get any better.

Thank you both for your replies.

It's definitely changed my opinion of the company and made me think I shouldn't be loyal to them and just put myself first in future!

Definitely look out for yourself. Unless you have decades of service to your company redundancy and loyalty isn't worth anything.
Get your CV dusted down.

With a merger they will start at the top and work their way down, how many people do we need at each level, who do we actually want to keep (yes yes redundancy had to be fair done on a matrix bla bla, reality they'll decide who they want in what roles)
Then they'll be trying to make sure people in similar roles are on similar salaries. Possibly an office merger and move too.

There isn't much loyalty from employers these days.
My dh worked for an large American car company in the uk and luckily the unions were pretty good at keeping some decent work practices and pay rises and some semblance of fairness with work and conditions, but that's not the norm for many places.
Sorry to sound a bit cynical :(
I know it's not easy job hunting either.

Like others have said, start looking for another job now. Even if you escape redundancy, it's only a matter of time before your turn comes.
Meantime, I would also refuse to pick up the extra work. Just work to rule, no favours. Give them no more than what they're paying for. I mean, what are they going to do? Sack you?
Good luck!
