To ask my landlord if she is thinking of selling?

I currently rent privately, we have a 2 year lease that will end in August 2025, with a 12 month break clause this August.

I got a letter from a local agent through my door.

It was addressed ‘dear neighbours’. It said that they had noticed the property was for sale and asked if we needed help looking for our next property.

The landlord has not notified me that it was for sale, and it is not on rightmove. Do you think this was a mistake? Should I ask her? Obviously it is her choice to sell, but I would like as much notice as possible to make my own plans.

Can’t see why you wouldn’t ask her to be honest?

RosiePosieCantLogIn · 04/04/2024 13:31

Just ask. Explain the letter and say you'd like to make plans if the house will no longer be available to rent.

writingfever · 04/04/2024 13:31

I would ask, but also consider that it could be an advertising gimmick by the agents.

betterangels · 04/04/2024 13:32

I'd ask. You need to know so you can start looking if necessary without panicking.

Popchippps · 04/04/2024 13:33

We get those all the time, just put it in the recycle bin
sounds like a marketing ploy…. L

SpinyNorma · 04/04/2024 13:35

We get random marketing letters from estate agents all the time. No harm in asking but almost certainly nothing in it especially as there's nothing on Rightmove and nobody asked for access for photos / floorplan / energy efficiency checks.

Weetabixagain · 04/04/2024 13:36

Not unreasonable at all, I would ask too!

Bucdynovehbkfdg · 04/04/2024 13:37

Thank you for your responses, although I did consider it could be a gimmick, I will ask just in case!

Absolutely do. I'm private rent but was really interested in buying somewhere within my budget, let initially, unfortunately it's been let but I'm still going to contact landperson and say if they want to sell, I'm up for it!

Good luck :)

BobbyBiscuits · 04/04/2024 18:54

Agents always send guff like this through my door, alleging they've just sold somewhere locally, and asking us to sell as they have a buyer...can you check online if there is any reference to it being on sale? I don't see how an agent would know it was if it wasn't on the market so publicly showing as such, unless they were already instructed.
I'd still mention it to your landlord. If they are it's out of order to keep you in the dark.

Noyesnoyes · 04/04/2024 19:38

Just look on Rightmove or zoopla?

ThatWardrobe · 07/04/2024 04:23

Could you ask your neighbours if they got the same leaflet through?

Londonnight · 07/04/2024 06:39

It will just be a flyer with agents just trying it on. I get them here all the time and just bin them.

If your contract runs until at least August 2025 then they can't issue you notice either.

itsgettingweird · 07/04/2024 06:41

I get these all the time - and my house is owned by a HA 😂😂

Certainly a gimmick and trying it on but in your case I'd ask because it's privately owned.

Zanatdy · 07/04/2024 06:45

If it’s a leaflet it’s almost certainly just a marketing thing. But ask your landlord incase if you’re concerned. I thought your post was going to say you were interested in buying the property you’re living in and should you ask landlord if they’d sell! I’m half tempted to do that as I love the flat I’m living in right now, but I need a garden, so I won’t.

Catopia · 07/04/2024 06:58

I used to get those letters in my mailbox all the time (at one point, I had 19 - yes 19 - in 2 weeks) when I lived in a flat in a desirable area. They're unsolicited from estate agents, possibly who have someone looking for a flat on that specific development. Don't sweat it.

PBandJ111 · 07/04/2024 07:11

We get these constantly… marketing ploy.

BroughttoyoubyBerocca · 07/04/2024 08:38

check rightmove/zoopla ?

Todaywasbetter · 07/04/2024 09:39

Just ring the agent. And ask.

Whatifthehokeycokey · 07/04/2024 11:26

Once had a landlord and asked if he was planning to sell, because suddenly he was renovating everything. He said no. He was, he just lied about it.

AgileMentor · 07/04/2024 13:01

Surely your first port of call would be your landlord?

40weeksmummy · 07/04/2024 13:27

99,9% marketing trick. I got 8 or 9 letters last month and my landlord is not selling.

PopandFizz · 07/04/2024 13:58

It's definitely a marketing thing. Noone is selling and the house not on rightmove!
